Fever_Discordia: Just 3 I think: Masterpiece Ed, realMyst and realMyst: Masterpiece Ed
I think its that Masterpiece Ed had the extra chapter but realMyst was proper 3D and not 'flickbook' and now the new one is proper 3D AND has the extra chapter so I'd go for this one, unless you are a particular flickbook aficionado or you don't want to spoil yourself for Riven...

googoogjoob: realMyst adds the extra age, Masterpiece Edition doesn't actually add anything except the superior graphics compared to the original game. So, basically, realMyst Masterpiece is just a graphical upgrade to realMyst for the most part.

The two exceptions to the straight-upgrade rule are, as far as I can tell, the addition of the hint guide, and the addition of a day-night cycle to Channelwood. (In the original realMyst, for time or space reasons, I can't recall, Channelwood was the only age not to get a day-night cycle, so it's stuck in the perpetual afternoon of the original Myst.)
The Masterpiece Edition is more than just a graphical upgrade. It uses a genuinely upgraded graphical engine that solves a few problems I have always had with RealMYST.

1) When panning the camera over the main part of MYST Island from the outer edges, say the Dock, on every PC I ever installed it on, the game lagged.

2) The mouse, on higher resolutions, lagged. (Yes, I tried all the normal mouse fixes, to no avail.)

The addition of the Day/Night Cycles are great too, as well as the new (read: remastered) music and sound effects.

Fever_Discordia: Lets hope they make a realRiven next or the step down in tech will be even MORE jarring than when it was juts plain realMyst!
avatar
jamyskis: The problem with realRiven is that would actually entail doing 'work' as opposed to simply constantly recycling assets.
I take it you haven't seen what they are up to then? A brand new title in Unreal Engine 4? A spiritual successor to MYST in a completely different universe?

Oh yeah, that would entail actual "work" as opposed to using 10 year old data.

I love this series and the original is one of my all-time favorite games, so as soon as I close on this house tonight, this is an instabuy.
Nice release, I'll throw it on the wishlist for now.

GOG.com: realMyst: Masterpiece Edition, this is not your father’s Myst!
Sucking up for the tween segment, ain't we? At the expense of the older players? More lip like that, and I'll have a word with your mother!
Am I the only one that thinks realMyst: Masterpiece Edition actually looks a little worse than regular realMyst? I don't know, but the art style seems to look watered down now that everything's all HD'd up.

I'll probably still buy it eventually, but I'm gonna wait for a better price.

It does look a bit more cartoonishly bright and colorful. But again, I only judge from the comparative video that was posted above...

Crosmando: Hell yeah! Been waiting forever for this to come here.

vanchann: I hope to see parts 3 and 4 of Myst series here too.

Crosmando: I bugged Cyan about this during their Kickstarter campaign, but they said they don't have a schedule for re-releasing them :(
Damn shame, though good they still exist as a studio considering how many other studios have disappeared these days.

I believe their needs to be an agreement between Ubisoft and Cyan for them to be re-released. That's what's holding it up I guess.
I'll pass on this one, I already have 3 different copies of Myst.

A 3D remake of one of their later titles would interest me a whole lot more.

Agreed, but they have talked about that before. They don't have the money to recreate Riven or Exile again, and the original Data is lost. They don't have the rights to touch EoA or Revelation.
The original Real Myst was really buggy and a pain to get working. Maybe its worth buying if want a real time Version of the game but honestly the original game wasn't that good. Personally I wish they just Skipped it remade Riven.
Whislisted for curiosity, as I've only played to Riven (Myst 2) in the past and I've just bought M1 here.

I can understand the motivation, Myst: Masterpiece Edition and Realmyst are old Windows games, and they obviously do not have the source code/art, so one day they will become incompatible with modern systems. This version, on Unity which is an engine that will probably be in development for decades to come, will make sure Myst is preserved into the future.

That said, if Obduction if a successful game, Cyan will obviously be able to grow their studio and remakes Rivan etc might be possible.

ViDRa: comparsion

Just wondering how accurate the comparison is. In the Masterpiece edition the flooring looks very low detail compared to the earlier edition. I wonder if they set a detail setting lower then recorded for their review. Surely a new engine wouldn't be given such low detail textures.
There are subtitles this time?
