It's a Myst-y mountain hop!

realMyst: Masterpiece Edition, a beautifully updated version of realMYST, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Myst on GOG.com for $11.99 (33% off the full price) until 9:59 AM GMT 10 May 2014. For those of you who already own realMyst, the launch discount lasts until 9:59 AM GMT 08 June 2014.

Alone on a mysterious island, you set out to explore its grandeur and mystery. Hear how a chilling tale of intrigue and treachery, defying all boundaries of space and time, is being told. Summon your wits and imagination. Every scrap of paper and ambient sound may provide the vital clues which allow hidden secrets to unravel a part of the mystery and lead you one step closer to reversing a wrong that has gone unchecked for ages.

realMyst: Masterpiece Edition, this is not your father’s Myst! It’s been 20 years since Myst became your world, and there’s never been a better time to revisit the Ages. This newly refreshed and rebuilt version of realMyst is all-things Myst, but amazingly more real. You can explore anywhere, unfettered, and in realtime! As a tribute to Myst's 20th anniversary, the original Myst images have been incorporated into the game and you can switch between the classic version and the remastered edition with a single key press!

We at GOG.com would also like to send out a very heartfelt THANK YOU! to one of our community members who goes by the nick LCRockfish. Thank you for the manual for realMyst! One last thing: SpiderFighter, you can remove realMyst from your GOG Mix now :)

Step into the Ages of Myst Island in the newly remastered realMyst: Masterpiece Edition for only $11.99 until until 9:59 AM GMT 10 May 2014 (08 June 2014 for owners of realMyst ).

jamyskis: Undoubtedly lovely looking, but there's no way in hell I'm paying $12 for the same game with shinier graphics again.
Yeah, $12 to explore Rime with free movement seems a little steep - then again, I have several copies of the game in other editions (counting Myst and RealMyst both).

vanchann: I hope to see parts 3 and 4 of Myst series here too.
avatar
Crosmando: I bugged Cyan about this during their Kickstarter campaign, but they said they don't have a schedule for re-releasing them :(
It's a pity :-(
I own the disc versions, but I like the convenience of the digital gog installer.

Myst 3 - Exile is my favorite part and has a really great soundtrack.

EDIT: +1 to you for the info.

keeveek: The masters of releasing the same game over and over again.
Now, now. It is difficult to take Capcom's crown.

Oh crap, you're right.

But who knows, maybe next year we'll see Real Myst: Masterpiece Edition HD Turbo Remix?

SirPrimalform: Not unwelcome, but I'd rather they remade Riven. There are now 4 distinct versions of Myst while Riven falls further and further behind.
avatar
Crosmando: Riven would quite an expensive game to remake and actually make it look better than the original. Even today in stretched 640x40 resolution Riven still looks amazing, which I would attribute to the prerendered graphics.
It would certainly cost more to remake, since I'd imagine that this version reuses a lot of assets from realMyst.

Still, with Riven looking as good as it does it wouldn't need much work to look even better. Even just re-rendering the stills at a higher resolution would make it look amazing but it might need retexturing depending on how good the original textures are.
Still, it's a big game and digging out the ~17 year old assets and either preparing them for real time 3D or re-rendering would be a lot more work than just porting realMyst to a new engine and upgrading the textures. I can dream though...
Wishlisted for now.
Heard some great stuff about these games.

That actually does sound good, but I wonder if the original renders from Riven still exist, it's a shame that so many games from that era had their source code/art/assets lost so the only real choice is to remake the game from the ground up.

I suspect Cyan does not have the source for any of their old games, including Myst, which is why they chose to remake it in Unity.

surprised there is no mention of Riven (DVD version with higher video quality)

This is what GOG needs
I bought RealMyst in 2011 and the rest of the series in 2012. So I'm hoping there isn't too much of a difference in this RealMyst update. From what I've read here, my game should be just fine. The series is a classic. So if anyone is new to it and you enjoy the classics, buy it.

That's... all ?

$12 for the "difference" between left screen and right screen ?

There are even aspects I like better on the left side. :-/
Blah. I reviewed this for the site I write for and just really hated it. Theres zero point in picking this up when you get exactly the same content by grabbing realMyst or Myst: Masterpiece edition. It didn't help when I reviewed it, graphically it sucked with clipping, stretched and broken textures and textures that occasionally didn't even match up properly leaving horrid lines across things.

Basically theres nothing new here for a bigger price. Yawn.

Makes sense. That would explain why the visuals are already outdated. Makes another re-edition far easier.

Niggles: So for those who are coming to Myst for first time, which one is the one to get? (and no i dont intend to get all of them...seriously 4 versions???),,,,
avatar
Fever_Discordia: Just 3 I think: Masterpiece Ed, realMyst and realMyst: Masterpiece Ed
I think its that Masterpiece Ed had the extra chapter but realMyst was proper 3D and not 'flickbook' and now the new one is proper 3D AND has the extra chapter so I'd go for this one, unless you are a particular flickbook aficionado or you don't want to spoil yourself for Riven...
realMyst adds the extra age, Masterpiece Edition doesn't actually add anything except the superior graphics compared to the original game. So, basically, realMyst Masterpiece is just a graphical upgrade to realMyst for the most part.

The two exceptions to the straight-upgrade rule are, as far as I can tell, the addition of the hint guide, and the addition of a day-night cycle to Channelwood. (In the original realMyst, for time or space reasons, I can't recall, Channelwood was the only age not to get a day-night cycle, so it's stuck in the perpetual afternoon of the original Myst.)

Fever_Discordia: Lets hope they make a realRiven next or the step down in tech will be even MORE jarring than when it was juts plain realMyst!
The problem with realRiven is that would actually entail doing 'work' as opposed to simply constantly recycling assets.

You do know right that Cyan are making a Myst-style game currently?

EDIT: Also wanna offer some evidence that Masterpiece Edition is reusing assets from Realmyst.
