So, You Want to Be A Hero?

One of the best series of the 90s--the adventure/RPG hybrid that combines high draw with low humor--the [url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/quest_for_glory]Quest for Glory series is now on GOG.com. Pick up all 5 games in the series for just $9.99! In addition to the manuals, maps, books and other goodies, we're also including the original EGA version for Quest for Glory I as well as the remake!

If you’re a gamer who remembers the days when a 386 was a blazingly fast machine, you likely have a special place in your hearts for Sierra Entertainment Games, and the Quest For Glory series may have been the best of the games that studio developed in the 90’s. For those who remember these classics, you probably aren’t even reading this, since you just clicked on “add to cart” and are already downloading the games. For the rest of you, let’s talk about what makes Quest for Glory special.

Quest for Glory is the story of becoming a hero. From the first game, where you are a recent graduate of the Famous Adventurer’s Correspondence School, to the last game where you are a hero with unparallelled skill, fighting evil on a grand scale, you chart the journey of your hero, whether you’re a fighter, a mage, or a thief. Each challenge you encounter can be solved a number of different ways--depending on where your skills lie--and discovering how to master those challenges and save the day is half of the fun.

The other half of the fun, of course, is the trademark silliness that Sierra games contain. Whether it’s clever throwbacks to other Sierra classics, cameos by the Marx Brothers, or deadly puns, the game makes sure that you’ll keep on laughing while you play. While there are definite moments of high drama and excitement throughout the series, the light-hearted nature of the games--especially the earlier ones--makes sure you’re never bored.

The Quest for Glory games have riddles and puzzles--as adventure games tend to--and fast-paced combat and stat-based character improvement--as RPGs generally do--but it combines the two together into a whole that is more than the sum of its parts.

Whether you’re a fan of the games from back in the day or you’ve never played them before, these great games are sure to enthrall, so pick up the complete Quest for Glory bundle on GOG.com today for just $9.99 for all 5.

JMich: Reversal in 2 is necessary, though it is your fault if you haven't managed to get it.
There are really few cases of instant death or getting stuck because you missed something, but almost always it's your fault for not reading your class' info.
No, you don't need Reversal - you can get by without spellcasting ability at all... There are 3 different ways of finishing off the final showdown...

I try to keep it spoiler free, but not sure if I manage it. Adding a "few" extra lines

----------------------Spoilers? Not sure-------------------------------------

Yes, where you can either sneak through the harem and use an item and stealth (or what will become acrobatics) to get to the other side, smash through the doors, destroy the gargoyle and use your shield to deflect, or use magic to open the door, destroy the gargoyle, and survive. How do you finish it as a mage without reversal?

----------------End Spoilers-------------------------
I'm ashamed to say that I have never even heard of this series. Is there another game/series that someone can equate it to for me just so I can get a bit of perspective regarding it's gameplay?

That's pretty hard. So many years later, it's still unique. It's a point and click adventure combined with an RPG, so you have your puzzles, but there are multiple ways of solving them depending on what your character is good at. But it still shares the focus on story that adventure games have; the RPG elements are merely the means to progress further, not an end in themselves.

Ah, fair point - a mage character would need it. But you'd more or less have to be playing it with your eyes closed to not get it...
Definitely one of the best adventure series ever. Nowadays in general I don't play point-n-clicks, but it's good to see this on GOG.

This was one of the games I played before I was fluent enough in english, and while I did love it, I couldn't get past day 7. At a point, I did get from a magazine a "What to do on days 6, 9, 12 and 14", or whatever the days were, even though the information was targeted for a thief character. So yes, it is quite possible to make it through the game without getting reversal as a mage, since it isn't used anywhere other than the end.
I don't think the other classes had any "must have" items that you can miss though.
Wow, awesome release. Thanks for this one, straight from my childhood!
Fastest GOG purchase ever, I can't believe I had forgotten that you still didn't have these!

All 5 for $9.99, I still can't believe it 0_o

I did a full run from 1 to 5 until the final boss fight where it kept crashing, maybe I'll finally see the end of it!
Thanks for bringing them, since I asked for them not so long ago so it was a great way to start a day!! It was an instant purchase! :)

Keep up the great work!! :D

kalirion: All right, one final question - are 1-4 all DOSBox, or are 1-3 compatible with ScummVM (patches / fixes and all that)?
If it's any help, the GOG installer demands an installation of DOSBox (tried myself).

This topic was also touched on page 2.

Well, IV is not supported by ScummVM so DOSBox would be required in any case, but 1-3 work with ScummVM. I was simply wondering if GOG included some patches or fixes which might break that support.

Hm, I'm sorry, dunno. This question should be probably addressed by GOG directly. Either here or via Support section.
I can't believe Quest for Glory is finally here. Thank you, GOG!
I've always wanted to see what these games are like.

I'll wishlist this for now since I have a lot of other stuff to play atm.
