Glory to Arstotzka!

Papers, Please, a dystopian thriller that plays out in the border document checkpoint of a totalitarian state in the early 1980s, challenging your morals and attention to detail, is available on GOG.com for only $9.99.

Life in a totalitarian country is a experience that can easily be compared to balancing on a thin line over a firepit. If you value your life and have a family to support, there's not much else left to do, but to work within the system. But the system is in no way fair and full of absurd regulations that would have been hilarious if the life and death didn't depend upon them. The job that the state will give you will never bring you enough to make a living, so you'll have to try and figure out some other ways to profit--and keep it secret. Even though everyone tries to cheat the state, or maybe because of that, anyone caught in the act faces the charge of treason. This does not end well. There are no exceptions, so even though in this game you will be a low-ranked state official, you will experience the bleak, depressing, and horrifying reality of a totalitarian system first-hand. Don't worry--there is some humor here. That's how people cope with oppression, after all!

Papers, Please is a unique game that takes such a basic concept as border checkpoint document control and builds an exciting, addictive, and emotional gameplay around it. With every day at the Grestin Border Checkpoint your job becomes more and more challenging with every new regulation coming from the Ministry of Admission. At the same time, the immigrants become more and more creative in their attempts to illegally sneak their way through the border. Back at home, you've got a family to provide for, while hunger, illness, and death are breathing down your neck. The simplistic, but stylish graphical style accents the intensity even further. Experience it yourself!

If you feel you could use some more appreciation for your job, your state, and your living conditions make sure to give the dystopian living a go in Papers, Please, for only $9.99 on GOG.com. The game comes bundled with The Republia Times and 6 degrees of Sabotage, two interesting earlier games from the same developer.

I'm sorry but why would anybody play this? Man its like people are running out of ideas or something... so upsetting
Why is only drumsetman's comment visible when not logged in? (hacking?)
This is one of the most interesting releases this year, at least for me.

Also, this game was made by one person and one person only. The amount of creativity in gameplay and the story (and it's carrier) is just mindblowing.

Maybe some people appreciate original ideas: those who don't, can go back to playing their beloved CoD.

I would so buy this right now, if I didn't have to be extra-perceptive of my current outcomes. Being basically out of job at the moment can be irritating at times.
Bought. Hello, second-more-interesting-job.

How about a game to take your mind off of this then? Check your PM.

Thank you a million times! Can't wait for the download to complete!
lol.. this game is quite different.. Iv played the first few days and i like it quite a bit. If the story mode delivers well this game could be quite an awesome adventure game.
How many levels does the game have? I saw an IGN video of the beta saying it was only 8 levels. Looks addictive and interesting and kind of nice if it were a DS game.

it has a story mode and an endless mode. I hope the story mode is more than 8 levels, but i dont know, iv played through 5 so far. (and apparently theres 20 endings, so i bet theres more than 8) And i was just thinking the same thing, this would be nice on a portable device like a ds.

Story mode has 31 days (levels), 20 different endings.

There are also 3 "endless modes"

Further, the game can be modded.

Endless mode you say? That sounds interesting. Thanks mate! My main concern is replayability so I always go for games with endless mode or random map generator or something over story driven ones.
I finished it today. I had to run away with my family because I messed up a little bit and I was afraid of inspection that was scheduled for next day, so I forged documents and I flew. I'm gonna play it through again to see other endings (there are 20 of them!). This time I will play as perfectly indoctrinated Astrotzkian officer.

Great game. So far best indie game of 2013 for me.
