The return of an 8-bit legend!

The Lords of Midnight, a unique classic mash-up of RPG, strategy, and interactive fiction, faithfully recreated for modern systems, is now available on GOG.com for only $5.99

The land of Midnight is in danger. The name of the villain menacing the realm is whispered in every homestead with fear and fascination: Doom... dark, Doomdark, Doomdark! Only the Lords of Midnight, the valiant knight protectors of the folk, can stand up to the accursed Whitchking. It will be no easy task, though. The lords will ride the four winds, looking for allies, recruiting their armies, and bringing light to wherever the shadow of Doomdark falls. Forging their legend with their every step, they would become the champions the land needs. Should they fail, all will be lost. Don't let them fail.

The Lords of Midnight was originally released in 1984. What you see here, is a revamped version of the exact same game, retaining its gameplay and graphical style, just adding some more intuitive interface and high resolution graphics. At its core, however, this is the exact same game that enthralled the imagination of many gamers almost three decades ago. The turn based game mixes elements of an adventure with a robust, well-written storyline, an epic wargame in which you manage and command large armies, and a role-playing game with much focus on exploration of the game's incredibly detailed landscape. Your main quest--defeating the evil Witchking Doomdark--is no easy task, and completing the game in any of the possible ways will prove a challenge. Let one of the oldest, yet greatest stories ever told in a computer game unfold before you!

See how deep, addicting, and fun computer games already were 30 years ago. Get The Lords of Midnight today, for only $5.99 on GOG.com!

G-Doc: The original game was only officially released on ZX Spectrum (and it's variations), and ported to Amstrad and Commodore 64.

And ported for free here for pc. Since 14 years for Windows (older for DOS).
So I feel giving $6 is really being a fan of LoM (I am, not so, even I had play it on my Amstrad CPC 6128)
Checked out the site. Can you offer insight to what should be downloaded in order to make the game work? THnaks

Sorry, I've been, and still am, on holiday, so have not been able to respond to this thread as quickly as I would have liked.

I just wanted to address some of the points raised here.

Firstly, with regard GoG - sorry can't help you there.

Now to the game.

Yes this is a remaster of the original game. It should play exactly like the original. The graphics have been updated and the UI tweaked for touch and mouse. It is not emulated, it is not the original code, it is completely re-written. When Mike and I originally decided to bring the game to release, we had big ambitions on what to add and update, that all charged when he died last October. I decided to release the game truer to the original as a memorial to him.

With regard the graphics. I believe that Jure, the artist, has done a marvellous job at redrawing the graphics so that they look like the original but are high resolution. That was a style choice, as was keeping the colours like the original spectrum version. I know it's not for everyone, but I stand by that decision. I will hopefully release new skins for it later in the year...

Sound... Yes the is no sound, as the was no sound in the original. This is also something I might address later in the year. The soundtrack from the trailer video will be used along with some UI effects.

Price. I happen to think the price is a fair one, but then I would wouldn't I! Believe me, at the price, not much profit is being made. I'm just about covering my costs, and that's enough. The the price is too high for you, then that's a fine opinion, I hope that you pick the game up later, should GoG discount it.

More later... Got a holiday to get on with....

Hey Chris, visit these forums often, promote your game, get some fans on your side, I think the result will be a fitting memorial :)
Am I the only one who saw those new screenshots and immediately thought of the Holy Grail animations where they get snowed in and have to eat all the minstrels and thus everyone rejoices, "Yeah".

Price is fine, people who get used to pay 0.01$ for 7 games on humble bundle aren't.
So many games... So little time !

The question is, what happens when you simply remove the new releases from the last couple of years? Do you get similar numbers to 2008-2011? Prior to 2012 there were virtually no releases newer than 3 years. If we remove all games newer than 3 years from the 2012 and 2013 releases we get 62 games in 2013 so far (est. ~90 by the end of the year) with an average age of 12.7 years, and 114 games in 2012 with an average age of 11.5 years. We seem to be getting fewer classics this year than in 2012, but probably around the same number as in 2010 and 2011.

Comparing this to the numbers above I would conclude that we are getting pretty much the same absolute number of classics as in previous years (with about the same average age), while the relative number of classic releases has declined rather sharply since 2012. Is that reason enough to be unhappy with GOG? You decide!
The problem, imho, is that the release of new/ newer games is blamed for the declined release of oldies/ classics, which, again imho, can not be proven. There's absolutely no guarantee that if GOG had not expanded to releasing new games that the numbers of oldies/ classics being released would have been higher. I personally doubt that they'd have been - as time passes and the "easy" deals have already been made, it gets harder to seal such deals, mostly due to rights issues and to some extent to publishers' persistant resistance to go DRM-free (a publisher having a number of games here doesn't necessarily mean he's willing to put every and all of his games here).

This thread here is relevant - it kind of chronicles the efforts of a number of forum members (tfishell, SCPM, Piranjade, IAmSinistar - sorry if I missed anyone) to track down rights holders of oldies/ classics from small devs/ publishers that are no longer in business.

Just my two cents.

Thanks, I'll try and spend some time here. Thankfully LoM has a very strong fan base, and they've kept me going for the last 20 or so years. The mobile version has been extremely well received also. So now I just need to focus on a few updates and the release of Doomdark's Revenge. After that I can think about future more drastic features for the games.

Yes, those games have not had anything done to them in some time! The DOS versions are true to the originals but you will need dosbox to play them now. WinLom I now consider obsolete. It actually has some gameplay bugs which I only found during the current version refresh.

Regardless of system, I think all versions of this game belong here on GOG. The game was released for several systems including Android smartphones, which is some feat. The Android APK as an add-on here would be great, and add a lot of value for newcomers and old fans alike. If this was the case, I'd have purchased LoM here, and not on the Play Store.

Hey brother, since you came all the way here, let me suggest that the graphics of the game could be exactly like the original (pixelated that is), at least optionally. Great work as it is though.

While I think it'd be cool to have the other color scheme as an option, I certainly don't mind it as is. The deep blue sky coupled with the white lines that make up the kingdom of Midnight give it a vaguely One Thousand and One Nights vibe. Which, in my opinion, is pretty damn cool.

Bought!

As soon as I'm done with Risen I'm going to sink my teeth into this.

There shoud seriously be made a game making simulator
that coud teach people the actual cost of making games imo.

Sorry to hear about Mike. It's always such a shame when someone goes right before they finish a big project they're working on. I wish he could have at least seen the release.

This game is a little bit before my time, and as such I don't fully understand it yet, however I bought it almost instantly because I found something strangely pleasant about it. Hopefully in time I'll be able to actually get anywhere with it.

Best of luck.
