Rugged Rogue Redux!

Jack Keane, an adventure game full of daring deeds, valiant ventures, and sinister schemes that you will take on with Jack's trademark roguish charm, is available 50% off on GOG.com. That's only $4.99 for the first week!

Witness Jack's first grand adventure! Well, the first we have a record of, anyway. It's hard to say how his adventuring career actually started, as his past remains uncertain. It's suspected that he's an orphan and that he spent his early life on London's streets. He is no stranger to theft and mischief, but all who know him can attest that Jack's heart is in the right place and his soul is pure. How did he become a defender of the British Empire, a treasure hunter, and a famous traveler--nobody knows. Maybe this story can give us some answers?

Jack Keane is an adventure game full of movie-like qualities. We have a handsome protagonist who laughs in the face of danger while he saves the day and gets the girl. We have a beautiful heroine who, in turn, saves the hero. We have a gallery of villains plotting against our heroes' homeland, and a cast of supporting characters ready to deliver comedic relief. With colorful graphics, zany plot twists, and original story, Jack Keane is a worthy entry in any adventure fan's game collection!

High adventure calls as the British Empire calls upon its defender, Jack Keane. Witness it all for only $4.99 on GOG.com! The 50% discount offer lasts until Thursday, August 8, at 12:59PM GMT.

Fred_DM: why were people here hoping for Blade of Destiny HD? from what I've been reading it's pretty much the worst release of the year so far...
I don't think anyone was still hoping for that. At this point, people were probably afraid of it. >_>

Ric1987: What's wrong with the Steam/retail releases? Game breaking bugs that may be patched out or shitty in general?
Both, apparently. The game does have a huge number of game-breaking bugs, but at the same time, the game itself is pretty bad anyway.

Both the DRM-free CE and the Steam release will be seeing patches by the sounds of it, but we'll have to wait and see how that pans out.

keeveek: I'm starting to loose my hopes for that.

how long I can wait for Emperor: Rise of the middle kingdom or Desert Storm 2 or Theme Park World?
avatar
tfishell: Given how well Zeus and Pharaoh have sold here, I'm surprised Emperor isn't here. Theme Park World - perhaps tech problems? Apparently the original Theme Park isn't here because of resolution issues.

I'm trying to keep this in perspective, as we saw great releases from Jan. to May, we got Tzar and Settlers 4 two or three weeks ago, and last summer was a Summer of Indies too, but I am a bit saddened too. (And I expressed some of that here: http://www.gog.com/forum/general/do_you_think_gog_need_to_up_their_game/post45)

EDIT: I know that, to some people reading, this may come across as whining or acting like GOG owes me something. Thing is, we're willing to give GOG 5.99 or 9.99 for these good old games, so I think that's a little different than acting like I deserve free stuff.
Yeah we had a pretty good 5 months in the first half of the year. I'm hoping they'll pick up on releasing some classics again soon.

keeveek: But it's a DOSBox game and runs perfectly fine.
Well, apparently they can only get it to run in 320x240. Somebody here said that another person asked about Theme Park on GOG's Facebook page, and GOG replied with this answer but it was deleted shortly thereafter.

December's EA Expansions, Cultures 1+2, Imperialism 2: The Age of Exploration, Avernum: The Complete Saga (although the 11.99 price tag does weird me out, lol), Leisure Suit Larry, Conquest: Frontier Wars, Neverwinter Nights 2: Complete (HIGHLY desired on the wishlist, so major props for it coming here), The Bard's Tale, Settlers 2®: 10th Anniversary, Cannon Fodder 2, Daikatana (historical purposes), System Shock™ 2, Sensible World of Soccer 96/97, various Apogee/3D Realms platformers, Blade of Darkness, Magic Carpet™ 2: The Netherworlds, Catacombs Pack, Clive Barker's Undying, Syndicate Wars™, Krush Kill ‘N Destroy 2: Krossfire, Strike Commander, Children of the Nile Complete, Cultures: Northland, Subwar 2050, Anvil of Dawn, Raiden Legacy, Wizardry 6-8, Chaos Overlords, Jade Empire: Special Edition, etc.

Well, I have a version... from some site... and it works perfectly fine. And people on this... site... don't seem to complain as well.

Because the devs said it would be coming to GOG, and it looked REALLY good in the screenshots and so on.

The last week or so has been non-stop terrible news about it.

Theme Park World is a funny one to get running on modern PCs. Many of the problems are related to the SafeDisc copy protection of the time, but there are also other issues that crop up that simply cannot be reproduced from one PC to the next.

It can be got working with a bit of effort and experimentation with the Windows compatibility settings, but it's an irritating bastard.

As for Theme Park, it's not so much the resolutions - that can be solved by simply having DOSBox run at a fixed resolution. It's a speed issue. There's no way to reliably configure DOSBox so that the game runs at a comfortable speed at both high and low resolutions, and there are good reasons to play it in low resolution (the text is painfully small in high-res mode). Whatever CPU cycle setting you use, either low-res will be too fast or high-res will be too slow.

I eventually gave up and just bought a used copy of the PS1 version.
Damnit I'm never going to find out what the hell Lords of Midnight is, I guess that's what I get for hoping.

Hm, I never had any problems, but maybe I'm just an exception.

Yeah, when you download it from that...site...people will generally take for granted that there will be problems, but these are problems that wouldn't really be waved through when selling the game for money.

Some write the solution is to set 10 000 cycles, but I don't know, the game runs fine for me in windowed 3x mode.

edit: Now I'm 100% positive, 10 000 cycles fixes the problem, this is how my game is set and runs perfectly fine in fullscreen or windowed mode

Setting 10,000 cycles works in high-res mode, but then causes mayhem when you try to switch to low-res mode.

Was looking forward to this being the release as well. Maybe next time.

So true, so true. With GOG, people expect to be able to run games right away, a reason to give 6 or 10 bucks instead of pirate the game. (which is why I created the thread to see how well they were doing on that front; pretty well, it seems) Support issues are apparently the main reason GOG doesn't have Linux titles (although maybe that should change given the amount of support for Linux here).
