Bad influence. Just like the Roadrunner cartoons.

, the infamous adventure game exploring the darkest corners of human psyche and boasting graphic violence in the best tradition of b-movies, is available in its uncensored version on GOG.com, for only $5.99. Our exclusive interview with Lee Jacobson, the game's producer, can be found in the [url=http://gogcom.tumblr.com/post/78954868646/harvester-interview]GOG.com Official Blog.

Remember, this is all just a game. You'll play as the amnesiac Steve (who is such a kidder!) as you try to figure out why you should join the Order of the Harvest Moon and discover the horror that lurks just beneath Harvest's small-town veneer. Meet some of the strangest characters to ever grace the computer screen--such as Mr. Pottsdam who really, really loves red meat or Colonel Monroe who guards the nuclear missile base and holds The Button. Harvest is a lovely town and the locals aim to keep it that way, no matter the cost...

Harvester is believed by some to be the inspiration for establishing the Entertainment Software Rating Board, as the game's first public showing at 1994 CES caused enough controversy to take the debate over violence in games to a whole new level. This title takes every possible opportunity to throw gore and graphic violence at the player. It wasn't, however, designed only to shock the audience. It's trippy story taking off in small-town America and touching down in mass-murderville can easily be attributed with a deeper meaning. How dark is the darkness at the bottom of the human soul? In its own campy, over-the-top way, this unique title looks for the answer to that question. With traditional puzzle-oriented point-and-click gameplay, live-action sequences, and characters portrayed by real-life actors, this nearly 20 year old game is still more than enjoyable. That is, if you can stomach the gore.

If you want to see a game that would never have a chance to be made in modern times, you really need a copy of Harvester, for only $5.99 on GOG.com.

PS. The GOG.com team would like to heartlily thank our long-time user and supporter, tfishell, whose help in securing the release rights for this title was invaluable!

tfishell: (It's 6 am where I am. :P)

I'll be honest, I find this game to be http://i.imgur.com/9QyqyCE.jpg. But at 800 wishlist votes, and Novotus and others wanting the game here, I'm glad I could help bring it (to an extent ;).

As tburger hinted at, I am going to take advantage of my momentary fame to again push for the Humongous Entertainment games to appear here.

- they're fun, charming point and click adventures mainly for kids but adults can enjoy them too.

- they can act as "gateways" to more mature, complex adventure games (like Harvester ... well, mature part is arguable ;).

- Tommo Inc. recently (like, mid-Feb.) finalized getting the rights, so now is the perfect time for GOG to talk to Tommo about bringing them.

Well done! Awesome work!

I just remembered actually that Night Dive were saying that "Command Adventures: Starship" and "The Fortress of Dr. Radiaki" were potentially available from the same source as Harvester - do you know anything about that and what are they like? Good enough for GOG to consider?

The European version of Harvester's manual has been added. Thanks again, LodgeLevel4 :D

Thanks. I don't really know anything about the rights situation other than those games were also originally published by Merit Studios, but from what I've seen they seem decent.

I assume those two will come to GOG eventually, courtesy of Night Dive, and ND will bring Harvester and the other two to Steam in the next few months.

Good work researchers, fans, and GOG! (^_^) Let's keep it going! It's always great to see that community activism does help yield results.
Edit: Argh, broken reply links.
Edit 2: And now it works?

Eugh its all murky and brown, just like a modern shooter - Ahead of its time!
Don't sleep on this release. BUY IT. Play it with a walkthrough if you have to. It's insane and perfidious, but well worth your time.

Zeeaire: I wonder why there are no more FMV games released?? they're the best!!!

Fate By Numbers was really fun and well made (especially for a graduation project), too bad they didn't manage to continue the story (I think it ends on a cliffhanger?).

Not free, but newer (2010) and quite massive, is ; ~10 years in the making, ~13 hours of FMV, featuring (among others) the cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Agustin Cordes did a nice [url=http://www.slightly-deranged.com/?page_id=2190]write-up and interview in case anyone's interested.

Yoomurjak’s Ring comes to mind too, kind of flew under the radar for a lot of people.
Wasn't this game the duke nukem forever (a very long time from announcement to release) of it's time?

vicklemos: Damn! Been waiting to play something like this.
Thanks to both Novotnus and your, sir, for convincing me. Bought! And Downfall wishlisted :)

ps: the developer is Harvester Games. Interesting, huh?
avatar
JudasIscariot: I know this may sound kind of suspicious coming from someone who works here because I am recommending a game on our service, but I personally recommend playing Downfall first and THEN The Cat Lady :) Just trust me on this :) Save The Cat Lady for whenever you get Downfall :)
Damn it....Now putting Downfall on my wishlist. If people keep mentioning cool things, I am never going to get that list wiped out!
Looks like fun - nice going, everyone involved. Collaboration's the name of the game with this kind of thing!
