Trade, diplomacy, espionage, conquest--and you thought asteroid mining was a simple operation.

[url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/fragile_allegiance]Fragile Allegiance, an open-ended 4X RTS game made by Gremlin Interactive, is available right now on GOG.com for only $5.99.

Fragile Allegiance employs you in the year 2496 as a asteroid mining operation manager somewhere in The Fragmented Sectors. There are six alien races competing with your mother corporation TetraCorp for precious ore--and it’s your job to out-perform all of them. After selling resources to the Federation, the player has to invest his proceeds in interstellar technology, expansion on other asteroids, ships, weapons, spying, and trading. Diplomacy and espionage play a crucial role, as do non-aggression pacts, joint-combat treaties, blackmail, and special agents. All of these combine to make a difference between ruling the galaxy and being sent on a long slow walk through vacuum.

Fragile Allegiance is an excellent addition to the conquer-the-galaxy genre, a combination of SimCity, Civilization, and Master of Orion with complex diplomacy and challenging AI, now available only at GOG.com for $5.99.
I've never heard of this one either surprisingly....'specially since along with fantasy strategy, it's also my favorite genre. Based on the ethusiastic response of fellow GOGers who know about it, and what I can garner from the reviews and screenshots...looks like I am going to HAVE to have this classic! Thanks once again GOG for continuing to bring "good old games" to your catelogue :-D

The name was very familiar, but when I checked through my games, I don't have it on CD. Guess I must have thought about getting it and never did, perhaps now is the time.
I'm sure I remember the cover being different can't remember what it looked like though.
Ah http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fragile_Allegiance there is the cover, I definitely remember that cover, I was so sure I had it.

The title is very familiar, yet I can't tell whether I've played this game, or how I recognize it. Maybe I have the retail version somewhere...

EDIT: And I don't seem to be the only one, e.g. deonast above...

This is probably a silly question but is this the DOS version? I see on Wikipedia it was written for DOS then ported to Win 95. I mostly go for DOS releases and this one looks very nice as I've not played it before. Thanks!
I remember this from back in the day.. don't remember it being 4X though.
Still, alright release.

htown1980: ooh. Gremlin. Does this mean we will be getting Premier Manager 2 soon?
Or Utopia: The Creation of a nation

Hey philarmitage, my guess is this game is just as you read on Wiki. DOS ported to Win95. My experience when purchasing DOS type games from GOG is that they come already set up with DOS Box so that they run nicely on current modern systems (like XP that I use on my gaming computer). I have read in some other posts, that some customers thought they were buying just the DOS version of games, without the emulator, and wern't happy about that, as I suppose they just wanted to run it in DOS. Personally, I like having it set up and pre-configured to run in DOS Box, saving me the trouble of doing that myself. If you are looking for just the strictly DOS version only, without the emulator, this is probably not that. Other's (or perhaps yourself) probably know about if it's easy or possible to extract the game from the emulator and run it yourself under a DOS system....

FFS GOG! STOP THIS! Keep releasing one great game after the other! Damn it.

:p

I always wanted to buy this game but I never managed to get a hold of one. Now it's on my wishlist. I love, LOVE, LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE sci-fi.

Thanks for the reply.

The reason I was asking is because I run Linux and have 100% success rate with DOS games (via DOS Box) but only about 30% success rate with Wine. Also my gaming tastes are mostly stuck in the 1987-1997 period which tends to align with DOS-era gaming!
THIS HAS MADE MY ENTIRE FUCKING MONTH NOTHING BUT SUNSHINE AND FUCKMOTHERING RAINBOWS.

Seriously GoG, thank you. :3 This is the game I wanted to see up more than any other game in the world outside of maybe Afterlife.

Can any GoG folks talk about what getting the rights to this was like? I'd given up hope of us seeing it after learning about how Gremlin folded in the way-back.

I hear you...love games from that era too! Just to be safe, you can always ship a question to GOG support, about GOG's version working with Linux. They are pretty good about responding, but can sometimes take a day or two if they are really busy and backlogged at the time. Have never used Linux, but have always thought about running a version of it as an alternate OS for fun, because I have heard such good things about it. Happy Gaming!

Given the problems that this game's later Windows port had on Win95, I'd be guessing that this was the original DOS version. I too though am waiting on word as to what version this is.

Given how backlogged their support likely is, it's better to just know that GOG doesn't support their games on Linux, whether it be through a VM, WINE, or Linux versions of DOSBox and ScummVM. They can't help you if you're not running Windows. However, there are a lot of us who run GOG games on either OS X or Linux, so if you need help, it's there for you.
Never heard of this game before

But these are the releases that I love the most here on GOG, discovering underrated cult classics and loving them when I play them for the first time
I got it and I gladly report there are no problems so far, after about 2 hours of gaming. Yes, it is the DOSBOX version and it runs damn fine! They even got multiplayer working through IPX tunnelling.

I heartily recommend this to any sci-fi strategy fan, I really wonder why this game wasn't popular back in the day. It's like Master of Orion on a smaller, tactical scale, which kinda makes it more interesting for me.

Thanks for confirming.
