So it's better to choose FlatOut 2 directly without bothering about first one if sequel is better? ;-)

Indeed, it is. Suffice it to say, there's no point in me installing FO1 ever again. It just isn't that good in comparison.

FlatOut has snow tracks, 2 doesn't.

Flatout also has different ragdoll minigames than the sequel. I actually prefer the minigames in the first over the second; however, the gameplay in the second is far superior.
Had some more time to play this evening and it's highly entertaining. Those bonus games in particular are beautifully demented. :D

Did anyone find a solution to that "no controller support in menu screens" issue? I'm kind of just dealing with it, and it's not that bad, but would still be preferable to have full controller support.

Also, I can't believe this was originally a PS2/ Xbox 1 era game ( yes, I mean the first one -- eff Microsoft and their stupid name choice for the new Xbox generation ). Maybe PC games just have a tendency to scale well with enhanced hardware over the years, but I think this game still looks excellent. ( And with very smooth and stable performance, on top of it. )
Excellent game. Good news that a spin-off is in the works http://nextcargame.com
Well wouldja lookit that. I guess if you make a big enough stink, you can get things done. See folks? You managed to get Fallout 2 back on GOG. If you keep it up, I'm sure you can get the rest as well.

Wait, FlatOut 2 was already on GOG.com :D

This is not Fallout 2 - this is FlatOut 2. That being said, did you just read it wrong, or are you being sarcastic?

CharlesGrey: All right, I gave in. Bought it, downloaded it, tried it, loved it.

Never mind what I said about the soundtrack earlier -- this game rocks. And I'm not just talking about the music here. I don't even know where to start, because I love pretty much everything about it. I don't play a whole lot of racing games, but I don't think I've ever played a better one, at least in this genre. Anyone looking for a fun-racer with lots of action: this is it.

One thing, however: While the game recognized my wired Xbox/Microsoft controller, the default controls are really weird. Acceleration, brakes and steering where all set to the four directions of the left analogue stick. It's possible to change this, though, and I'd recommend making use of the shoulder triggers, like most racing games.

One more problem: While the controller works fine during the actual races, it seems to do absolutely nothing during the menu screens, so you have to use the keyboard for those. Very awkward and inconvenient, and I hope there's some unofficial patch for that.

Other than that I'm happy with my purchase, though and recommend the game. Great sound/music, lots of action(!) and despite its age it looks surprisingly good. Still screenshots really don't do it justice. ( Runs smoothly at max settings for me, too, and my current graphics card isn't... optimal. )

So, thanks to the GOG team ( and original developer ) for another great addition to the games catalogue. :)
Damn it! Why'd you have to sell me on another game to get! :D

How do you change the gamepad controls for a 360 controller - is it all in the menus, or do you have to do something else to get the game running properly?
avatar
Pustako: What is not
-Could sport a little more tracks and cups (you can complete all of them in a couple of hours)
-Very detailed physics engine combined with large number of on-track objects makes it difficult at times to focus on racing, which can ignite frustration (especially on certain tracks)
-No licensed cars
I don't know about that one - isn't it only available on here because of this? :)

If it had licensed cars, it would make licensing this game all the harder to do!

Just buy it, you can thank me later. 8D It was a spontaneous purchase for myself, as well, and I don't regret it.

As for the controls, the game recognized my pad ( wired xbox controller for windows -- your experience may vary, depending on your controller choice ). You just need to switch input device from keyboard to controller in the game options, and then customize controls according to your preferences, since the default set-up sucks. :P

Meh, real world car brands would be just advertising anyway. I'm not a car enthusiast, so I don't care either way, but there's plenty of different car designs in the game, and apparently many are based on real world cars.

I'd also have to object to the claim that the game does not have enough content. There's many different tracks/cups, plus tons of hilarious bonus games. And you can buy new cars and upgrade them, which adds further long-time motivation. Or just try to beat your own times and high scores. In other words, the 10 bucks or so will buy you plenty of fun for many hours.

Edit: Almost forgot: In addition to the regular races and bonus games, there's also arena battles where the only goal is to wreck the cars of all the AI opponents.

Loved this game! Kinda reminds me of Carmagedon with its weighty physics. It also works with my force feedback racing wheel if anybody cares. The cockpit cam is just great.

This is one of the few racing games out there where I (sometimes) don't mind losing. It's just fun driving the cars. Smashing the environment doesn't get old. Nor does playing destruction derby with expensive sports cars. A real gem right here!
Excellent release!

EDIT: Also, when are we going to see FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage come here now?
