FlatOut is on my shelf but I never played it. Watched the video of this and it looks AWESOME. Short on cash right now but it went immediately on my wishlist.
All right, I gave in. Bought it, downloaded it, tried it, loved it.

Never mind what I said about the soundtrack earlier -- this game rocks. And I'm not just talking about the music here. I don't even know where to start, because I love pretty much everything about it. I don't play a whole lot of racing games, but I don't think I've ever played a better one, at least in this genre. Anyone looking for a fun-racer with lots of action: this is it.

One thing, however: While the game recognized my wired Xbox/Microsoft controller, the default controls are really weird. Acceleration, brakes and steering where all set to the four directions of the left analogue stick. It's possible to change this, though, and I'd recommend making use of the shoulder triggers, like most racing games.

One more problem: While the controller works fine during the actual races, it seems to do absolutely nothing during the menu screens, so you have to use the keyboard for those. Very awkward and inconvenient, and I hope there's some unofficial patch for that.

Other than that I'm happy with my purchase, though and recommend the game. Great sound/music, lots of action(!) and despite its age it looks surprisingly good. Still screenshots really don't do it justice. ( Runs smoothly at max settings for me, too, and my current graphics card isn't... optimal. )

So, thanks to the GOG team ( and original developer ) for another great addition to the games catalogue. :)

So FlatOut 2 does allow the user to change the default controls? Is there a way to bind accelerate/brake to Left Trigger/Right Trigger of an Xbox 360 controller?

Didn't I pretty much just say that? :P

But yes, you can do that, and I'd recommend it for anyone trying to play with a gamepad. Seems most racing games use that control set-up, so the default gamepad set-up in FlatOut 2 feels pretty strange.
Well it's about bloody time BugBear.

Now to cross my fingers for Ultimate Carnage.

That would be really cool!

I wonder if BugBear's upcoming "Next Car Game" will be on GOG.

I have no idea but I'd like to think so, especially now that FO2 has arrived.
Hm. Just noticed this on the gamecard:
twice as many mini-games along with brand new and much requested online multiplayer modes are just some of the exhaustive features that are included in FlatOut 2.
GOG might want to consider taking that blurb off the page as the only way to play online is via GameRanger or virtual LAN services. Gamespy, which FO2 used for its official online component, has been defunct for a while now.

Nice release, will buy at some point. I've played the first on the Xbox but never got this one.

Even seems to be gold/platinum for Wine.. :)

A different publisher owns the rights to the Mac version.

After googling a bit, it appears Virtual Programming owns the Mac version, sorry :/
FlatOut 2! At last available on GOG. What are your thoughts? Here are mine :)

Platform: PS2, PC (retail).

What is cool
+Outstanding crashes, the best I have ever seen in a video game
+Excellent driving model, combining fast arcade accessibility with great physics model and some nice simulation touches (especially on RWD cars)
+Constantly challenging, due to smart catch up and distinct AI personalities (mostly composed of aggressive maniacs)
+Nice array of good looking cars divided to three classes
+High variety of fully interactive, object-packed tracks, some of which are truly admirable
+Plays fantastic in multiplayer mode
+Loads of bonus races and events (figure-of-8, aerobatics, destruction derbies, etc.)

What is not
-Could sport a little more tracks and cups (you can complete all of them in a couple of hours)
-Very detailed physics engine combined with large number of on-track objects makes it difficult at times to focus on racing, which can ignite frustration (especially on certain tracks)
-No licensed cars

Cost.
The game was a member of Flatout Adrenaline Pack, containing all PC FlatOut titles to date. I paid around 9 EUR for it at retail.

Play time: 15 hours.
I played around 15 hours of FO2 combined on PS2 and PC, and even more of FO:Ultimate Carnage (which is a technologically-upgraded FO2/remake for 360 and PC with some additional elements) and FO:Head On! (a PSP FO2 conversion with some elements from Ultimate Carnage).

Bottom line.
Perfect brawler racing game, the best progression FlatOut series have seen so far. Absolutely recommended for any racing game fan – arcade, simulation, vehicular combat, virtually anyone!
