I've spent quite a lot of time in the game already (and it's great!) but the end of my session kind of looked like "now you need to fight 2000 random boring battles to become strong enough to defeat the castle"... I'm glad to know it's not like that :)

on the other hand, I'm not very pleased that you can't "complete" the hexes (new "building" fights reappear over time), so my completionist ego suffers :D but I guess this just isn't the type of game where you get to complete everything...

ghaaroth: The hero always gives a rough estimate of outcome before the battle. Of course it can't account for everything - in case of spiders, for instance, a lonely uberhero will have hell of a time dealing with their web ability spam, while a bunch of lowly militia will handle them reasonably well.
Hmm, I'm not quite sure why, but this hero estimate is missing after the tutorial. During the tutorial, my hero always had a sentence to say about the enemy - but on my first "real" shard, he stays quite!? I am only given number and type of enemies without an estimation of the outcome...

If you choose difficulty setting higher then 'skilled', your heroes will remain silent. Just not to bother great Master with their stupid mortal thoughts :)

You can explore every province to 100%, as a matter of fact, but then the campaign would take you literally thousands of hours to finish. I was extremely completionist myself on my first few shards, but having realized the "shard rewards" are gained after a victory even without physically finding them down there first, I got increasingly less diligent with exploration. The game is long enough as it is :)

On every shard, you start anew (and unlike all other games that do the same, there is a perfect reason why, but I am not going to spoil the tutorial's ending :) The heroes who served you on a previous shard remain behind, and you have to manage with the local resources whenever you invade a new world.

Don't fight every easy battle you see. Conserve some of them for lower level heroes to rank up. Well, at least that's what I learned. You also don't have to take over every province. I like leaving provinces neutral, especially when I'm low on income and don't have good Guards to protect the province. Hills and forests also offer good sources of income, so take those first if possible.

That portrait will be shown in a single map mode. In the campaign you're bound to your body (or astral form).

I'm very pleased to read that addons for one game will also be given to the older version of the game itself! A great way to reward long term fans (as well as new ones) and also for those who might not have a state of the art computer (plus sometimes older 2D style graphics are just fun to play with over 3D).
I'm falling in love with this game. I still haven't figured it all out. Like what do the little red house icons mean in the provinces? I'm still having difficulty figuring out how to learn spells. I have scrolls. I go to the library. Nothing happens. I'm sure it's something simple that I'm overlooking. I'm on the last (the sleeping lord's) castle in the tutorial. I'm sure I'll get the hang of things the more I play it. I've put about 3 hours into it today.

ETA: I've taken my time. Explored a lot. Had my hero's ass handed back over to me a few times. (Giant slugs and things that come from the still pool I'm looking at you -__-) This title has some serious legs though. And I have a feeling I'm going to be playing it a long time.

To learn spells, you need to click on your hero, then click on the 2nd icon at the bottom of the hero window to the right of the screen. Or, you can just click on him, and press S. When you're in the Spells menu, click on a spell on the right hand side of the screen and drag it to one of your hero's slots.

Ah, ok. That makes sense about the houses. As far as the spells; I'll fire the game back and try it again. I was able to get one spell into my slots out of those scrolls and it was the one that summons a skeleton warrior from the remains of the fallen. So, then I had two slots of that spell. Which I didn't mind it's a pretty useful spell. Especially if you can take down an enemy with a magic arrow pretty quickly and then summon it back the next turn to fight it's former allies. I'll try to learn them again. Thanks.
