Sometimes, true love just falls from the sky!

Deponia, a gorgeous adventure game that feels like a cartoon based on works of Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams, is now available on GOG.com for only $14.99 until Thursday, September 13 at 10:59 AM GMT.

Rufus would have been a nice guy, really. That is, if he wasn't such a self-important, all-knowing jerk. But hey! Living your whole life in the middle of a junkyard can do that to you. Why does he live in a junkyard, you might ask. Well, it's not like he had much choice. The whole surface of the planet Deponia is covered with a thick layer of trash. That's why our ambitious protagonist always dreamed of getting into one of the upper spheres, where the privileged part of Deponia's population leads a life full of luxurious bliss, probably even unaware of the garbage piles below. But everything is about to change, as a girl named Goal suddenly falls from the cities above with a warning of impending doom.

Deponia is a top-notch point-and-click adventure game from the makers of The Whispered World. It combines the classic adventure game controls with beautiful cartoony graphics and heaps of brilliant humor. The garbage-filled planet Deponia, with all of its gadgets and gizmos, is one of the most captivating, original settings ever to be featured in a video game. With hundreds of challenging puzzles, tons of witty and skillfully enacted dialogs, and amazing cinematic cut-scenes, Deponia is a game that every adventure fan should experience.

Join Rufus and Goal on their voyage through the mystifyingly beautiful garbage-filled landscapes of Deponia, for only $14.99 in the release week!

Daedalic_Carsten: For The Whispered World we can not offer the german version here.
:(

Now I almost regret buying it. But hope dies last and maybe one day we'll see the german version here too...

Anyway, thanks for making my day by bringing Deponia (and its sequels) here, as well as pissing off GOG staff by spoiling upcoming releases. :D
Thank you, suomainen!

All our games will be DRM-Free here - also The Dark Eye (if it comes one day), but also like TWW, we can not offer german voices.

And then there are games like Botanicula or Machinarium (never get the O/X puzzle solved), which don`t need voices. :)
Wow how did I miss this game? So glad it's here on gog!

I remember playing the demo for The Whispered World and I had to buy it asap when it was released. One of the best adventure games I had played in a long time since Syberia/The Longest Journey games.

Reminded me a lot of older lucasarts style games and I loved it.

Can't wait to get this and play it.

Fesin: That's sad, because than I can't buy it here. Could you specify the reason for this?
GOG rocks!
avatar
Fesin: That's true though!
But I guess we can't expect to see Satinavs Ketten here in the foreseeable future?
Most likely they can offer it here because they have a contract with a specific publisher for the German region.

Senteria: Darn you GOG. I don't have time for good releases. As well as I need to save up on money anyway. Even if I did buy it, I would not have the time. However it looks awesome. Will probably pick it up later in the future on a sale.
Now I believe that you somehow got in possession of a working flux capacitor-equipped vehicle, because it is almost as if I posted this word-by-word and you traveled back in time to post it before me.

Either way, the game is wishlisted. I'm a sucker for adventures and cartoony graphics are a perfect match to the more humorous-laden entries of the genre.

Titanium: The art style actually reminds me of Monkey Island 3, if you get the correlation.
You're absolutely right. Just as I looked at the protagonist I immediately placed him in my mind just outside that restaurant where you get the gold tooth.
Really quite happy that so many daedalic games are coming onto gog. They are the best active adventure developers around.
Unique universe in the tradition of Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett and Matt Groening.

BadDecissions: I always feel kind of bad for writers and other artists, when the great praise people give them is "kind of like another, more famous artist!" You see that a lot on mystery books: "Sort of like Christie!"

Anyway, I'll probably pick it up at some point.
I'm a full-time writer and, if my work was compared to Terry Pratchett, I'd be dancing the happy design :) The man is a bloody genius.

AndyBuzz: It's an artistic style that has nothing to do with age. Whether you like it or not is another matter and no one will argue if you dismiss it on grounds of preference. But saying that is aimed at children is at least naive.
avatar
Poulscath: I have to agree. It really irritates me when people dismiss cartoony art as childish as though they're worried that liking it will make them appear childish.
Exactly. Half of Asia buys this style of game, comic book, movie, TV show, movie etc. and most of them are adults and not children. What in the west some people see as "for children" is firmly sold for adults in Asia and it's a multi-billion dollar market.

I used to teach corporate English in Thailand, and if I chose to show a movie they were absolutely ecstatic if it was a cartoon in this type of style. And I'm talking about 30, 40 and 50 year old managers.
avatar
Merchito: I have a problem with games when the art seems designed for children [...] especially in the adventure games section. Seems to me they are aiming at the kinder-garden.
I have a problem with books that are published in soft cover editions with pictures on the cover. If its not good enough to sell as a hard bound, nicely stitched volume with simple embossed lettering, then the book its self must be utter drivel and unworthy of publication.

Newspapers that are not in broadsheet format with a focus on business and world news are not fit to wipe my bum on.

The perception of all cartoons and comics as children's fancy deprives you of an excellent medium for complex story telling and you risk exposing children to inappropriate material by assuming anything in that format must be suitable for them.

Wohoo! Finally a german adventure (and a great one too) that was actually allowed to keep the original german language. Well done!

Well despite the fact I'm an English speaker so it doesn't matter personally to me, I'm happy that there is a bit of multi language love here (German and Russian Language Packs). It's a big world and it has to be more enjoyable to play a game and hear your own language.

Daedalic_Carsten: Yes, The Dark Eye - Chains of Satinav will also be available here...
With German audio or subtitles or the english only version?

Fesin: Really? I'm kinda surprised by this one.
Isn't that a Steamworks title? And isn't the publisher Deep Silver, who loves jerking off to pictures of St. Gabe?

But well, I'm not complaining. The more good games not Steam-exclusive, the better.
Nope, only the German Retail Version and the Steam Version use Steamworks. The international digital Version from Gamersgate, Greenmangaming, etc. is much cheaper and works without Steam - but is english only.

Daedalic and/or Deep Silver are using Steam as a kind of region restricion for german customers. If you want german voices and subtitles you have to buy the expensive steam version - Retail or digital from Steam or german digital retailers like Gamesload or Games Rocket.
International customers can buy the cheap "english only" non steam version everywhere else. This is understandalbe, it is an adventure and it is The Dark Eye, it is popular in germany but in the rest of the world you must offer a comeptitive prize? But the price differs to much and feels like a rip-off, the Steam price for Chains of Satinav in the US is $29.99 - in the UK £29.99 in Europe 39,99€ - nearly 70% more!
That is why i doubt that we will see Chains of Satinav with the original german version anytime soon at GOG...

Rincewind81: ~snip~
You're right about that, see the quote above:

It would have been too good to be true. To a certain degree I could even understand their tactics regarding the pricing, but making the German retail version Steam-only is an absolute no-no for me. That way they won't get more money from me, but no money at all. I have plenty of other games to play (and most of them DRM-free), so I don't have to put up with everything the publishers try to force on me.
