A delightful mixture of tower defense and RPG.

Defender's Quest, a highly addictive mixture of tower defense and role-playing game set in a world shattered by mysterious disease, is now available 33% off on GOG.com. That's only $9.99 until Tuesday, November 6, at 10:59 AM GMT.

The Kingdom of Ash was not a nice place to live. The mysterious Plague decimated the citizens and the war seemed to have no end. The court librarian Azra, however, led a peaceful life buried in her books and shielded from all grisly matters by the castle walls. Then all of a sudden--she was ill. As all of the Plague victims she was tossed into The Pit by the royal watchmen. Never she would suspect the horrors that awaited her in this underworld of villainy, necromancy, and greed. But she survived, mysteriously cured of her illness. Now, with newly-gained mystical powers and a party of allies, she has to follow her destiny.

In the times where tower defense games are a dime a dozen, Defender's Quest really stands out from the crowd. This game is to tower defense games as Puzzle Quest is to the match three genre. The RPG elements make it immensely enjoyable and add layers upon layers of strategic planning, character development, and intriguing storyline. These are no simple towers defending the battlefield in this one. These are characters you'll grow invested in. There are multitude of settings that let you control every aspect of their behavior in battle. Should the archer target the weakest enemy, or should she spam her arrows randomly causing damage to the whole horde of your foes? Should your berserker develop his ability to attack three monsters with one blow or concentrate on his HP regeneration ability? A seemingly simple strategic decision could easily turn the tide of a battle!

Gather a party, master your skills, crush monsters, hoard loot, and survive the onslaught while you set out on the Defender's Quest, for only $9.99.

Hey Guran speaking of length, you *must* try NG+ when you are done with the default game. It expands on the story and humour :)
It looks ugly. It's one thing going through my games collection and playing X:com or such, bad graphics but considering the age and enjoyment of the game, I can't complain.
But when the game is new, I expect it to be visually appealing, especially if they want 10 dollars for the game. There are many free to play, visually appealing and fun games out there to play.

Are the RPG elements or the gameplay elements really good enough to make up for the poor graphics and warrant the cost?

MichaelFurlong: It looks ugly.
That was the first thing I said as well when I visited their website. I will say this: in no way do their graphics hinder the enjoyment of the game; IMO they add to its charm. Yes the colour palette is simple, and as stated in my review, it looks like a game straight out of Miniclip, but in no way did I ever stop to think "goddamn this is ugly" while playing. It's one of those things where, when you've clocked in about 20 minutes, you'll realize you can't have it any other way.

The RPG elements are rather simplistic, and not too complicated. The skill trees are typically split into 2 branches, some with an additional sub branch. You'll level up and buy equipment. Typical RPG fare there. There's the joy of leveling up, of course, but as mentioned in my review, you'll roughly have an idea of what skills are best at which points in the game. One thing, though, is that certain situations demand higher emphases on certain skills. This means you'll have to respec quite often. For example, one boss is guarded by skeletons loaded with armour, so if your Knights aren't specced to tear armour down, you'll want to respec them accordingly.

But what really makes the game so outstanding isn't any one part. It's the sum of them, as LordCinnamon said. The writing, the RPG elements, the pacing of battles... everything coalesces to form a superbly fun experience. I can't do it justice enough by emphasizing on any one aspect, but you'd have to try the demo for yourself:

Oh yeah the music is great. Damn. I should have mentioned that in my review.

Got it already from "because we may" sale. This game is great. Lots of fun for any tower defense/rpg fan. I totally recommend it.
Will the people who have played the game give it some stars? As it is now with no stars, it does not speak well for it.
It has 5 right now, from what I'm seeing ;)
*blinks*

Yes ... now I see 5 stars. Could have sworn it had none earlier. Well that is good. Me when I buy games, I not only read reviews, I will see if there are any stars. I tried the demo and got to say it did hook me while I was playing it.
Thank you SO much everyone. If you run into any bugs or glitches, let me know and I'll do my best to fix them ASAP.

Also - mac users, we weren't able to get version 1.0.48 ready for Mac by launch time, but we will be getting that out on the auto-update server later this week. There's not many major changes between 1.0.35 and that, but there is some extra story content in New Game+ via Azra's Journal we want to make sure you can get.

Would it be possible to add a hotkey to display the map in grids? Would help in NG+ when we're observing enemy movement patterns, especially with those that phase out.
@lowyhong:

Sounds reasonable! Let me enter that as an "enhancement" in my bug tracker.

I'm running out of keys on the keyboard! :)
I love seeing Devs actively interacting with their customer and fan base. Please keep it up :)
And if the devs will continue to support it with bug fixes, new features and add-ons, yep that will be a big plus towards getting my (and imo everyne else's) money.

*Counts the dollars*

@lowyhong - I'm entering the "bug report" now. Currently, the grid overlay should turn on when you click on a defender to place, but I think that only shows grid squares for legal placement spaces. I assume you want a full grid over the entire map that you can just turn on/off any time?

larsiusprime:
Yup. I use the "click on defender" trick too, but would be helpful to have a function dedicated to enabling a grid overlay on the entire map.
Gotcha, we're on the same page then. Report filed, officially on the to do list. Will get around to it as soon as I finish everything else on there XD
