Finally, a zombie game that depends on your brainzzzz.

Dead State, a zombie survival RPG with tactical turn-based combat, non-linear gameplay, and many locations to explore across undead-ridden Texas, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com.

Dead State is a survival RPG with non-linear exploration of more than 100 unique locations, 50,000+ lines of branching dialogue with a host of rich, complex characters. It's set in central Texas at the collapse of civilization: as society crumbles, the player must defend their shelter from threats while keeping themselves and their allies fed, equipped, and content. Inspired by classic strategy RPGs like Fallout, X-COM, and Suikoden, Dead State emphasizes clever turn-based combat, complex character interactions, and base building against a background of humans fighting tooth and nail to survive in the face of horror and despair.

Want to see Dead State in action? Join Rurikhan, as he takes on the undead enemy this Sunday, 7PM GMT (11AM PST / 2PM EST), on Twitch.tv/GOGcom. Remember to follow our channel, so you don't miss our future broadcasts!

Thank you to the developer and publisher for releasing on gog!
Got to say, this looks interesting... even if the zombie craze has become a little crazy. xD

I can't stand zombies as a theme (Plants vs Zombies exception) but this looks interesting due to the whole survival, resource-management game instead of a simple shooter.

Niggles: No launch discount?
While I can only judge by the screenshots and description at this point, it appears to me that the price for this one is about right. In fact, I'd buy it right now, but I'm afraid it will take a few patches before it is fully enjoyable and stable, so I'll wait.

If people insist on launch discounts, and higher discounts in general, it will just lead to higher base prices. ( Which is what certain publishers are already doing. ) It's ridiculous for some games already, and personally I'd much prefer reasonable base prices, rather than 80% discounts several times a year, and then the game goes back up to €40 or so.

$35 is a bit high for my taste - i had been following the game on and off and had given up on them coming to GOG (there had been no indication a while back of them doing anything but Steam imho)
It looks promising but ill wishlist for now...
I’ll probably pick this up soon, but I'm not half as excited about the setting as something like This War Of Mine. When I spotted a Dead State announcement 4 years ago, people said they were sick of zombies. Now 4 years later, they’re REALLY sick of zombies.

It's about 24 Euro here, which seems fair to me, for a game of this size and quality. ( I mean, most AAA games cost about three times as much over here. Aren't games in Australia expensive too? ) But as I said, I'm only judging by the screenshots and description, so it's hard to say for sure. For me the main reason to wait a bit longer is not the price, but the fact that most new games these days tend to be a buggy mess, so I'd rather wait for some patches and reviews before I try the game.

It's probably not just the zombies, but the lack of creativity and quality in many games of the genre(?). At least this one is a different take on the zombie apocalypse theme, and seems to be well made. The mix of tactical combat, resource management and conversation/tough decisions sounds to me like it could add up to a fun game experience.

I've been quite interested in this for some time, but I'll be sure to wait on a few impressions first though. I'm definitely going to check out Sunday's twitch Stream.

Yet there's still nothing much original about it. It's kind of like a more elaborate Zafehouse Diaries or a Walking Dead TBS-alike, whose premise is pretty much the same thing. State of Decay comes to mind, too. Not saying that it's a bad thing, but it sure ain't anything new. Beats the endless stream of mindless zombie shooters and brawlers though.

ShadowWulfe: Complain? I don't see why these developers make such a big deal about Steam vs. GOG versions. It's not like they're losing money from you for choosing to use X over X.
I'll double dip the GOG version when it hits -75%.

Or you could notify the devs that you want a GOG key.

It's far from unprecedented that devs think they can force Steam keys on their Kickstarter backers. This happened a number of times (Tesla Effect, Mousecraft and The Banner Saga come to mind) and in each case, the devs eventually caved in.

Just remind them that they can get keys for backers free of charge (link).

Out of curiosity: Have they provided a proper DRM-free (read: non-Steam) alternative to backers?

Here's a question for the people who bought it. Can you kill or eliminate someone in your group or just not let them join in your group? It would be cool if I can control how many people can join.

Well, you start out with a pretty small group, and you have a choice whether to let anyone else join (as long as you can convince the others anyway, you may be the leader but the other survivors won't follow you blindly).
If someone in your group really annoys you, you can just let them be eaten by a zombie or even "accidentally" kill them in combat, since death is permanent. You'll take a big morale hit for that though.

And to all the people saying they're sick of zombie games, this game isn't (much) about zombies. The focus is really on managing your shelter and the group of survivors you're the leader of.
Sure, you'll end up killing a lot of zombies to get at the resources you need, but unless you do something stupid and end up drawing dozens of them to your position, zombies are never much of a threat. All of the harder fights are against other groups of survivors.

Frankly, the game could have replaced the "zombie apocalypse" theme with any other kind of natural catastrophe severe enough to kill most people and destroy all order in the area, and it wouldn't be much of a change.
Very interested. Wishlisted.

But looking at Steam forums, adding Zombie apocalypse scenario as Patch(DLC/Exapnsion/Sequel seem to be second most requested feature after endless war mode. :-p Granded, most of those people just want to be able to kill everybody without reprecautions (I murdered unarmed old couple and now all my people are depressed! Waa, waa, waa. My never used a gun civilian can't kill armed proffessional soldiers wearing bodyarmour! Waa, waa, waa. ;-p). It's actually quite funny that people suggest turning other games to basically copy of their favorite games and when someone makes a game like their favorite game they go bug crazy and call the game clone or ripoff. :-p

Aaand redeeemed my backer copy!
