Hipster Dave starred in Romero's platformers before they were keen.

Dangerous Dave Pack, which includes three classic platformers: Haunted Mansion, Risky Rescue, and Dave Goes Nutz, is now available on GOG.com for only $5.99.

Among the gaming industry legends, John Romero is one of the most colorful and recognizable people. But how well do you know the early works of the man that pitted you against Hitler in Wolfenstein 3D, sent you on a one way trip to demon-infested space station in Doom, and armed you in nine-inch-nail-gun to blast atrocious Shamblers in Quake? Here's your chance to get acquainted with three games from Romero's pre-id Software times. What kind of games? Platformers, of course!

Dangerous Dave Pack features a sizable chunk of platforming history. Dave, a character created by John Romero, runs and guns through three mind-twisting adventures. In Haunted Mansion our hero searches for his brother Delbert, who was trapped in a house filled with ghosts, ghoul, and zombies, that need to be put down back in the ground with Dave's trusty shotgun. In Risky Rescue Delbert is missing again and Dave has to face the evil, skull-faced Doctor Nemesis to get him back. He succeeds, of course, but there's no rest for the wicked--in Dave Goes Nutz our hero has to break free from a mental institution that's crawling with zombies. For the price of one game you get three sets of devious levels full of monsters to blast, traps to be avoided, and shiny diamonds to collect!

Are you up to some classic platforming action? Do you dare to stare into the pixelated abyss of PC EGA-era gaming history? Well then, grab Dangerous Dave Pack for only $5.99.

hedwards: No, this is a Softdisk title, the first iD titles weren't until later on. Good news though, I'm guessing that we can expect to get more goodies in the future as the Softdisk back catalog has a lot of very good games available.

DodoGeo: Now at least I know why Keen Dreams isn't in the Steam Commnder Keen pack.
There's a couple that are hard to get now, Keen Dreams and Aliens Ate My Babysitter. But, I own all the others, and I still have the floppy with episodes 1-3 on them.

SCPM: I haven't downloaded it, but at the bottom of this page the publisher has a download called "Gamer's Edge Sampler" that says it has the very first Dangerous Dave game for free:

hedwards: Or you can download it directly from John Romero's page, but it's a bit of a pain as it's the Apple ][ version.

I just tried the download from Flat Rock Software, and it is the very first Dangerous Dave game, I can play it on Win XP, it doesn't even need DOSBox to run (unless you want sound effects I imagine).
I think I'm gonna faint....

That's not the first one, John's giving away the first one on his site and it doesn't run on PCs or any modern hardware without emulation because it was an Apple DOS title using an obscure form of BASIC.
Not familiar with this at all, but looks neat.

I'm surprised they're leading with this rather than Catacombs, but I'm not complaining as I hadn't gotten around to buying Dangerous Dave, so this is a welcome order.

Neat? Neat? This is the second best platformer series ever made, after the Commander Keen games. IT'S AWESOME!!!
Ah, the good old one hit = death, no saving days
I never did play these games for very long. Pitty the first game isn't in the pack (I cant disobey my play games in order of release policy)

Maybe one day we will see all of Apogee's platformers too

Exactly :D

Just download the original from Romero's site. http://www.rome.ro/games_dangerous_dave.php

It's an Apple ][ title so it will require a bit of work, but he owns the copyright so there shouldn't be any legal problems with downloading it from him.

That's one part of gaming that's definitely better now than it used to be.

Austrobogulator: Oh, I just noticed, there's - for want of a better word - a typo at the start of the article; 'Dave Goes Nuts' should be spelled with a z...
Have a look on the gamecard. "Dave Goez Nutz". I think those cancel each other out quite nicely.

From Romero's site, I didn't know about this:
"Even from the beginning I had plans of making more Dangerous Dave games. The title screen says Dangerous Dave in The Deserted Pirate's Hideout. The sequel was named Dangerous Dave in The Haunted Mansion. Those are the only real, TRUE Dave games since Softdisk decided to make some shitty sequels that were just a mishmash of earlier graphics and crap. These are Dave's Risky Rescue and Dave Goes Nutz!"
Glad to see these arrive on GOG. Looking forward to the arrival of the Catacomb Pack!

However long it'll take to release it here...

SWEET.

I had Haunted Mansion a long time ago and loved it. I've been craving some platform action lately. I think I'll get this.
