Eat your heart out, Columbus!

Cultures 1+2, a set of two exploration-focused RTS games in which you lead a Viking kindred to unimaginable glory, is now available on GOG.com, for only $9.99.

Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, Christopher Columbus, the great sailors of the age of exploration, shared one little known thing. They all hated Vikings. Why? Just imagine. You spend long months at sea, battling against the storms, trying to keep your flotilla afloat and your men alive, you don't eat nearly enough, you don't get decent sleep, everything tastes like vinegar, and you miss the company of ladies. It takes you so long to reach your destination, that you almost forget that dry land actually exists. But then you hear a cheerful "land, ho!" coming down from the crow's nest and you just know that all of this was worth it. You tremble with excitement, as you board the landing boat and you want to shout from the top of your lungs as your feet touch the sandy beach of the NEW WORLD for the first time. But then you notice. A broken down drakkar. A horned helmet half-buried in the sand. A standing-stone with a runic description saying "Eric wuz here". Of course, you never tell that to anyone. Back home you are celebrated as the first European who set foot in the new land. But you know. Vikings. Damn Vikings.

Cultures 1+2 let you become the leader of an adventurous tribe of Vikings to set off on a voyage of exploration and settle new, more or less exotic lands. The first game's main focus lies in the process of discovery and building a well-functioning infrastructure. In the second one the balance shifts towards war and politics, giving more focus to warrior and diplomat character classes. Both iterations offer endearing, colorful graphics and an amazing amount of gameplay details. If you like RTS games but prefer more focus on exploration and development than most of the games in this genre offer, be sure to try Cultures!

Did you ever wanted to visit distant lands and meet exciting new people (to conquer and enslave or possibly coexist peacefully with)? Become the brave young Viking, Bjarni, and do just that in Cultures 1+2, for only $9.99!
wishlisted!!

skycutter: I bought the GamersGate version of Cultures 1 a while back and, disappointingly, it doesn't have the in game music included.

Does this GOG package include the in game music?
avatar
JudasIscariot: I made sure that both games had the soundtracks as available bonuses :D. And yes, the in-game music should work in game. If you experience any issues with your game, please don't hesitate to write to us and we'll help you out :D.
Good man. ;)

mistermumbles: Hm. Shouldn't Fallout 2 be removed from that list? My GOG copy had children in it. I wonder whether they switched out game versions at some point. I know Fallout 1 is still censored.
avatar
JMich: Don't ask me. I usually add the new game pages, and don't really know which games are censored and which aren't. If a vanilla installation of Fallout 2 includes children, then the information is probably outdated. As I recall though, one of the mods does restore children to the game, so if your game is modded, it might be the reason that you see children.

Unless of course you do a Sixth Sense move, and see dead people or something...
I think I read some time ago (cca week) someones post about GOG replacing Fallouts with US version, thus allowing children, during recent installer update.

Wishbone: So what you're saying is that it's much closer to The Nations than to The Settlers. Hmm, a pity. I've spent ages on Settlers II, but I got tired of The Nations really quickly.

Still, the implementation of the features counts for a lot. It might still be a lot more fun than The Nations, I suppose.
Same here. I'm not really sure why as The Nations seemingly does away with the most difficult part of the Settlers, as in the roads. I didn't really how important that was to the gameplay.
Settlers roads are why it works!

timppu: I think GOG had its say with them anyway, in order to fit the bundles to their most common $6 and $10 price points.
avatar
SimonG: There isn't a single "fixed" bundle on this page that GOG has created*. They aquire license of previous releases and then agree with the publisher on a price. GOG gets a product offered (or goes after said product) and then talks with the right holders about the price.

*excluding maybe new games.

And the "christmas bundles" weren't really bundles in the sense of D&D or Culture Bundles. Here you bought a collection of games for a discount. With the D&D anthology, eg, you buy the D&D Anthology for its asked price.

With games released before DD, GOG is pretty much a reseller of those old licenses. Being it a single license that had a couple of games

Or a single game

That might sound awfully technical and anal for you. But that explains a lot of GOGs acquisition process, pricing and eg. why the EA expansions where missing but not Ultima VII. Or why some games are censored or languages are missing.

Edit:

The Cultures Anthology on Dotemu is something only Dotemu offers. Not a resale of an older license. Why Dotemu does something like this and GOG not is somethin only GOG can answer.
I wondered about this.

What about, for example, Space Quest 1 + 2 + 3?

I know that Sierra sold some bundles (1 to 5 or 1 to 6) but I didn't know if they sold a bundle for 1 to 3 or if gog created it. Thoughts?

Damn, I didn't saw these. (Same as King's Quest). Apparently GOG is willing to go the extra mile to create new bundled packages.

Those were probably done because selling those games as a collection would have been more than 10$ and selling the individuals for 6$ would have been too much. Weird is that the complete collections are sold elsewhere for 10€.

So I guess it boils down to "GOG rarely bundles games, if the offered package doesn't fit their pricing structure". It probably is cheaper and easier for GOG to pick up existing bundles that to create new ones.

Good catch!

Cool. Weird that they did it for Sierra games but don't seem to do it for others...

I don't know though, maybe Wing Commander 1 + 2 is another? Not sure about Ultima 1 - 3 or Ultima Underworld 1 + 2... Duke Nukem 1 + 2... It's too much effort trawling the net looking, I was just curious about Sierra games as I am a fanboi.

I agree that it is clear that gog don't seem to like making bundles unless they have to.
Hmmmm

Just one game on the Tuesday, I hope GOG hasn't "run out" of games to release due to licensing issues.

Also, they need to keep spamming that Japanese company that owns the Wizardry rights with emails, eventually they will give in.

everyone's broke after the sale, GOG always starts releasing slowly in January...
Great release! Love the game and have been waiting to see it on GOG. Would have been an instant buy, but as I spent a lot during the sales, it's wishlisted for now instead.
Seems like an ironic name 'cultures' when apparently it's a game about the friendly practice of one nation wiping out other cultures that has killed so many millions in history.

After you read up on the horrors of the actual history it's harder to me to enjy a game doing it, kind of like a 'SimHolocaust'. Whee.

Anyway, no Wednesday discount today?

Clearly haven't played the game, or read up much on the history of the VIKING landings in the Americas which had very little impact on the cultures that already existed in North America, think you might be thinking of the re-discovery by Columbus and everything that followed.

This game has very little military depth, if I recall there are only about three or four fighting units in the whole game. Instead it's about managing a thriving economy and the day-to-day needs of your people. So less about military tactics and more about sims-like people management.
