And thank you, Degica, for bringing the game here! ^_^

BlackbirdHM: Thanks for supporting Crimzon Clover, everyone! It's a really big deal to us.

Regarding the panel borders, there is a point to them. This game was originally ported from the arcades, and arcade monitors have a different aspect ratio than the monitors you are used to using at home. The panels are there to preserve the original aspect ratio of the game and keep the shot patterns and gameplay as close to "arcade perfect" as possible.

If your monitor can rotate to a vertical orientation, this game does support "tate" display that will increase the size of the game window and make it appear very similar to the way it would display in an arcade.

I've attached an example picture of tate display in action.
But what if I want the original aspect ratio undisturbed by cluttered graphics on the sides? What's so difficult about offering up flat black borders? I can't use a vertical monitor where I am and I hate the insistence on filling the horizontal border space with distracting, messy fluff.

What could be sillier than calling Crimzon Clover overhyped, then bringing up Ikaruga, the single most overhyped game in the history of the shmup genre?

Also, Ikaruga was most definitely not an indie shmup.

Er, If that was to me, then you missed the point I was making entirely. I have a serious pet peeve about the modern habit of adding convoluted border graphics to vertical & non-widescreen games and never giving us the option to turn them off. I only used Ikaruga as an example of how this trend is spreading, that was a game that already had an elegant horizontal look that was screwed up by adding stupid border graphics to the PC port.

Neither is Crimson Clover, which was made and released as doujin.

There's nothing modern about using border graphics to enforce the size of a rendered play-view; Japanese devs have been using such a trick since the PC days. It only seems to be spreading because we're more aware and getting more of these games on digital stores now.

Doujin isn't a studio, it's the Japanese indie scene. Crimzon Clover was made almost entirely by one guy working on his own independent of any studio involvement. That's the textbook definition of an indie game.

No, I was replying to one of the posted reviews that seemed to be replying to my own review, not you.

I totally understand your problem with the borders and there are some games (like Blue Wish Resurrection) that give black borders as an option.

You might try style 2, they're less ostentatious.

Sorry, I assumed it was in here as I was the only one who mentioned Ikaruga in the thread.

So this one has a less busy border? I'd still prefer none but the simpler the better.
Yeah, under the "system" options change "panel" to 2.

It's the cartoon gunmetal borders from the original doujin release.
I didn't say doujin was a game studio, lol. It's a concept isolated from indie, originating around the turn of the 1990s and spreading through magazines/fanzines and Comiket. The game came out for Windows in 2011, but has been successful in arcades through the NESiCAxLive distribution program. Seems to me that Yotsubane developed and published for a different market and with a different philosophy in mind (1CC vs. save-your-progress) than modern indie.

I guess we're operating under different definitions of "indie" here or whatever. Yotsubane was a bedroom programmer who made an independent game for the doujin scene. That game was so successful it got ported to arcades with slight changes, then the arcade version was ported back to PC in this gog version.

If the game's eventual success retroactively rescinds it's independent origins, or Yotsubane's failure to wear emo glasses excludes him from the "indie scene" then I guess you're right and Crimzon Clover must be a AAA studio release.
As I guessed, as a common human being, Memories8bit has some problems playing the game and speaking on twitch without dying a lot :o)

Here's a video of a bullet hell shooter (Mushihimesama by the legendary studio Cave) where the player one credit the game (although she lose two lives against final boss) but casually explain the game and do the conversation at the same time .....

Publisher DegiGames is streaming Crimzon Clover right now:

And they told us that the game does have a local multiplayer! :-O
(That should be added to the gamecard, I think!)

Tho I would like to say in my defense, that I just got the game like a few hours before the stream started. So in addition to that, doing a bit of commentary and peeking in the chat, I'll say: I did good. :D
And I look forward on continuing as well.

Oh but I wasn't attacking you, I liked the stream (although I would have liked the game sound a bit louder in the mix) and you didn't pick an easy game to stream ^o^
BTW, your YT video about lefthanders was interesting ;)
