The Armageddon starts with C.

Carmageddon Max Pack, the game of ruthless racing rivalry and motorized metal mayhem is now available on GOG.com for only $9.99.

Ah, automobile racing! Such a classy sport. The pinnacle of friendly rivalry, fair play, and finesse. There's quite no other activity a gentleman could enjoy more on a Sunday afternoon in the company of his good chums. I know there are some unprogressive circles proclaiming automobile racing to be brutish, morally corrupt, and unworthy of a true gentleman. I say! It's hard to understand all that public controversy surrounding our favorite pastime. Some accidents are bound to happen, but risk is a crucial ingredient of every elite entertainment. It's certainly not like we are putting anyone but ourselves in the harm's way. The thought that a gentleman driver could run over a pedestrian with his automobile is simply... pedestrian. I can't imagine how this noble sport could ever become unfair, not to mention brutal. Absurd notion, I say. Absurd!
--Sir Harold M. Damage, April 1908, Dullbottomshire

Carmageddon Max Pack, a dynamic racing game with original vehicles, exaggerated car damage model, (un)realistic physics engine, and little to no rules, embodies all the fears of early auto racing contestators. With deviously designed tracks, oddball drivers, and wheeled monstrosities that pass for cars, this game will entertain you just as much as it will shock you. The Max Pack edition includes the original Carmageddon and the Splat Pack expansion. You have to see it for yourself. But before you go, here's a little pro tip: the best way to make sure that no one reaches the finish line before you do is to make sure that no one reaches it at all. In other words--don't hold back!

Gentlemen... uh... people... uh... well... Drivers! Start your engines and roll out for the Carmageddon Max Pack, for only $9.99!

We'd like to thank the members of the amazing Carmageddon community, especially Toshiba-3 and hifi. Thank you, guys! Your contribution to the release of Carmageddon on GOG.com will never be forgotten.

ATTENTION Kickstarter backers of Carmageddon revival project: your codes have been already sent to Stainless, they should support you with them shortly!

Fred_DM: i just hate to think that GOG, who are usually very open-minded and straight-forward, are too scared to describe a classic game properly.
Agreed about that. Then again, there's nothing worse than dealing with fanatic bunch of "responsible parents who know nothing about videogames" if they ever happened to find out one way or the other - after all, GOG doesn't have any age restrictions. And no, they won't listen when you tell them that the appropriate age is written on every game's page.
Carmageddon (hardware mode).
Game give out 15-20 fps like Battlefield 3 at max quality of grafics. Do not possible to play. WTF!
Meanwhile all my 4 CPU cores loaded at approximately 25%.

Win7 Ultimate, Athlon II X4 620 | 4Gb DDR3 | AMD 5770| 7,5 Tb | LCD BenQ 24" G2420HD [1920х1080, 60 hz].

Have tried using just one core?
I am running hardware mode on my single core Laptop, and it is working fine, without any FPS Problems.

Fred_DM: some of the "innocent" pedestrians in Carmageddon seem to be armed. why not at least mention something like "armed goons"?
It's self-defense, as you are trying to squish them. ;)

Ubivis: Have tried using just one core?
I am running hardware mode on my single core Laptop, and it is working fine, without any FPS Problems.
Ttied to set 1 core - load at one core became 90-100% and same 15-20 fps. 2 cores - load 50% at each, same 15-20 fps. 3 and 4 cores give out same 15-20 fps.

I have full old CD Carmageddon and CD Carmageddon Splan Pack. It in Win7 64 bit i can not install it, but in WinXP with pathes 3dfx, cli2nop.zip, dgVoodoo1.50Beta2.zip, VDMSound_Pack.rar, CARMAV.EXE (method described here http://www.liveinternet.ru/users/dimzon541/post49514929/), it give out 60 stable fps and high grafics.

Installed GOG Carnagedon Max Pack at WinXP, and haved same 14 fps by FRAPS (1_gogcom_dosbox_.png). Then i start Carmageddon with pathes 3dfx, dgVoodoo1.50Beta2.zip... and FRAPS shows ideal smoothness - stable 60 fps (2_carma_1_mod_gl.jpg).

At torrents long ago is lies pirated Carmageddon Max Pack (funny, it have name identically as new Carmageddon from GOG), created by own hands of usual user for Win7, this modification have same problem with perfomance in Win7 and WinXP as in version GOG.com.

As you noticed, this is for XP only. Our games must be working under all the systems starting from XP up to Vista/7. We cannot use something that only gives partial compatibility, especially since XP use is on heavy decline. So while it works for you, all the vista/7 users would be furious (and rightly so).

Max Pack is the official name of the Carmageddon + expansion pack. It was officially that way. Torrents did not invent the name, it was released under that name in 1998.

Secondly, I am not familiar with the torrent mod you are talking about, but most likely it bases on DOSBOX with Gulikoza's patch and a wrapper - all tied together in a nice package. We decided to use DOSBOX (a customized version for running glide wrappers) because of all the solutions tested it gave the best results in stability and functionality. Speed is a problem, because right now, Dosbox w/ wrapper does all the graphics related calculations using the CPU.

If you are still running WinXP then I can only suggest that you keep using that mod if it works for you. Alternatively, you can try the win95 experimental patch stickied to the top of the carmageddon forum. In my own opinion, 95 hires is even better looking than the 3dfx version, but it might not be working for everyone, hence our decision to release the 95 version as an experimental use at your own risk patch.

You can also try increasing the cycles in the dosbox conf file. This way you will tell dosbox to use more of your processor power (unfortunately it isnt as simple as that and you might not see any difference). We tried to input the most universal setting, but the number of CPUs on the market is crazy so the users are welcome to experiment with the setting that works best for them. Refer to carmageddon forums or just PM me and I will tell you how to do it.

Anyways, I hope you will have fun with the game.

Hi all,

sorry for my bad english :-).

First of all, thanks to Gog.com for reviving those masterpieces...Carmageddon is a part of my childhood's gaming on PC.

About Carmageddon Max Pack,I can play Carmageddon (hardware mode) smoothly, but i think that the resolution under 3Dfx emulator is stuck to 640x480 or something like that on full screen, and i cannot change under "graphic mode setup"

If i change any of the option under "graphic mode setup", on menu start - gog.com - carmageddon folders, the game will run on 320x240 without hw acceleration, so i prefer to leave all to default. I tried some combinations like opengl, direct3d.....change rendering mode...resolution...but i can't improve graphic.

This guy recorded this video with your version too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QH2C9TqkfiU

But i see much less aliasing on vehicles, so i suppose that is running at true 1080p.....what's my mistake ? I forgot something to do ? My OS is Win 7 x64, all drivers updated...ecc.....ecc.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: I solved installing nGlide 1.00 configurated at 1920x1080, removing glide2x.dll from folder Gog.com/Carmageddon/DosBox. Now i can get 1080p @ 60fps......smoother than before.

Carmageddon is free on iOS for 24 hours.

https://itunes.apple.com/app/carmageddon/id498240451
By advice of Tolya I did next operations for hardware mode if I am not playing multiplayer.
In C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Carmageddon there are 2 files
dosboxCARMA3dfx.conf
dosboxCARSPLAT3dfx.conf
Backup them and then open each of them by text redactor, find
[cpu]
core=dynamic
cputype=auto
cycles=max
cycleup=10000
cycledown=10000

We need “cycles=max”. Change “max” at number of needed cycles. In my case with Athlon X4 620 changing give next results at level 1 at start:
cycles=max – 13 fps without of stammer of sound
cycles=10000 – 2 fps without of stammer of sound
cycles=20000 - 4 fps without of stammer of sound
cycles=30000 - 7 fps without of stammer of sound
cycles=40000 - 9 fps without of stammer of sound
cycles=50000 - 11 fps without of stammer of sound
cycles=55000 - 13 fps with very little stammer of sound
cycles=60000 - 14 fps with very little stammer of sound
cycles=65000 - 14 fps with little stammer of sound
cycles=70000 - 15 fps with little stammer of sound
cycles=75000 - 15 fps with stammer of sound
cycles=80000 - 15 fps with big stammer of sound
cycles=90000 - 15 fps with very big stammer of sound
cycles=100000 - 15 fps with very very big stammer of sound
cycles=110000 - 15 fps with awful stammer of sound
As result default “max” of cycles became optimal and increase of cycles goes to rise 1-2 fps but at the same time gives stammer of sound.

Thanks for method, but it gives to me same 13 fps. At the same time it gives at 1920x1080 graphic match better than default GOG.com. Gog.com gives 640x480 and upscale it to 1920x1080 with blurring, but nGlide 1.00 gives real 1920x1080 with clear picture, to show this I did screenshots by FRAPS in hardware mode at my 1920x1080 monitor from gog.com (3. gog.com dosbox FRAPS.png, where picture have resolution 640x480 because FRAPS grab original signal without upscale) and with nGlide 1.00 (4. dosbox nGlide 1.00.jpg, where picture have resolution 1920x1080 and high definition). Another interesting thing – if install nGlide 1.00 and in options of it choose wrong resolution, for instance my 17”notebook has 1600x900 but I choose 1920x1080, then nGlide 1.00 gives out 640x480 upscaled to 1600x900 – just like gog.com.

As nGlide gives real FullHD than I surest to developers think about it, may be is needed to create patch to go at nGlide with high graphics.

does anyone else have DOS box crash when exiting the game? and you have to use task manager to end it?
