Paranormal investigation with a retro soul.

Blackwell Bundle, four supernatural adventure games from publishers of Resonance in a DRM-free package, is available on GOG.com for only $9.99 (that’s 33% off!) for the next week.

Blackwell is an indie series of retro-style point-and-click 2D adventures consisting of four games: The Blackwell Legacy, Blackwell Unbound, Blackwell Convergence, and Blackwell Deception. The game’s main character is Rosangela Blackwell, who discovers a family secreat after her only relative, her aunt Lauren Blackwell, dies. She’s a medium, and she finds an unlikely friend in the form of Joey Mallone, a sardonic ghost from 1930s. From now on it’s Rosa’s and her new spirit guide’s job to investigate supernatural cases in NYC and set the troubled spirits to rest.

Blackwell Bundle offers everything a classic-adventure fan would ever want from a new release. The story is engaging, features plenty of drama, some bitter humor, and dialogues that will suck you in like a good ghost novel. The game requires you to to switch between Rosa and Joey to talk to different living or ghostly characters and solve puzzles which are both logical and challenging. Add some retro pixelated graphics, great voice acting, and an original score, and you’ll find the Blackwell Bundle to be a quality adventure series that is not only an easy recommendation for the fans of the genre, but also a good starting point for those who weren’t lucky enough to play some of the classic point-and-clicks from the Golden Age of adventure games 20 years ago.

Blackwell Bundle is available on GOG.com with a 33% special release discount--for the next week you can get the game $5 off for just $9.99. This offer lasts until Tuesday, June 5 at 6:59 AM EDT.

Gazoinks: Just out of curiosity, would you say that they're the best of Wadjet Eye's games (I've played Gemini Rue and The Shivah and thought they were both great)?
I don't know. I haven't played the other games yet (I bought the bundle-in-a-box just a few days ago, and haven't installed anything from it yet). But... the reason why I took so much time buying Gemini Rue and The Shivah is that I don't expect them to be AS good as Blackwell. I had just decided that even if they were half as good, they'd still be worth it. I know some people say Gemini Rue is even better, though. I assume that Blackwell is somewhere between Gemini Rue and Shivah, if there's really a difference of quality.

Blackwell touches me, because I love ghost stories, and it deals with the aspects that make them great : the sense of loss, regret, irreparability that goes with death and the added ability to look back. There's something deeply melancholic in Blackwell, beyond the wit. And the great jazzy music adds to it. I don't expect the other games' settings to allow the other to tap into this quite as much. So, I may be partial because of this. If you allow yourself to get into Blackwell, it can be surprisingly moving, at times.

And Shivah is considered by the authors as quite clumsy compared to Blackwell. So, at least, they are more satisfied with Blackwell. It's also a quadrilogy (so far : expect an ending that leaves some slowly revealed "background story arc" aspects to be opened for the planned sequels, which should be around two). So, of course, you get attached to the characters differently than in a single game's amount of time. It may also be a plus.

Give it a try. Or, maybe, someone who played them all can answer you better.

I´ve bought Resonance yesterday and now I´m out of money - wishlisted for now, but definitely buying, :)

Telika: snip
Though Gemini Rue and the upcoming Resonance had different creators. As I understand it, Wadjet helped them out by applying some finishing/polishing touches and then assumed the role as publisher, while the Blackwell games are Wadjet's very own. Differences are to be expected then.

999888: 60 - 90 minutes? If you are an adventure game warrior maybe...
Personally, it took me at least 3 hours for each game (3.1 hours, 3.4 hours and 3.8 hours according to Steam).
The fourth game is also significantly larger than any of the first three.

For what it's worth, I prefer the Blackwell games to Gemini Rue. It's kinda like the difference between Gabriel Knight and Beneath a Steel Sky, though I'd say GR is better than BASS.

I guess resonance will have to wait a bit :P
What a surprise. Four GREAT games for $10, cheaper than anywhere else, and still the price comparison discussion that arises in every thread resurfaces here.

edit - added GREAT

I tend to ignore those discussions completely. My stock reply (regardless of the game) is: GOG games are better because they are DRM free, with DRM free bonus items. so comparing to other outlets which may be $2 higher or lower is pointless. Also, who really obsesses over the price of a $6-10 item?

My only price complaint is the $30 price point, because I won't pay $30 for a game download, regardless of what game it is. In those cases, I either wait for it to go on sale, or wait for it to get old enough to drop in price.

This is not a comment about this particular game, but my stock reply for every single one of these totally pointless discussions. (Which I've just pointlessly replied to. ;-)

Fantastic offer yet again! Instabuy. I'm really glad that I did not give in to the temptation when these games were offered at Steam.
If Wadjet Eye did not make it clear that a Linux version would "maybe be available", but not until 1 year combined with a forum message that claimed that the Windows version runs fine on Wine...I would have waited even longer for a crossplatform version.

davelgil: Yep, it's the remastered version. Compiled in the newest version of AGS and with the extra commentary/voice acting in Blackwell Legacy
Great news, I was actually about to ask exactly the same question but ne_zavarj did it before me.
Yes! Great release. Thank you GOG.
Oh no! The Blackwell games are absolutely great, but i already own them! T_T

If you thought Gemini Rue and The Shivah were great, you'll most probably like the Blackwell games, too, and that's all you need to know. ;)

Which game is the best is a matter of personal opinion, but personally I'm glad I don't have to make a decision and answer that question. :P

I also liked Erin "Lively Ivy" Robinson's Puzzle Bots a lot, even though (and probably also because) it's more different in style than the WadjetEye games mentioned above. Still thinking about getting Da New Guys, as that one has the least polished look and I'm not sure the humor is enough to offset that, but I fear in the end I'll get it anyway. :)

Just wrapped up the first episode. It was pretty damn good. Better than expected actually. I also didn't expect the voice work to be as good as it is, seeing how people said it was iffy at points. I only had a problem getting my head wrapped around the note-clue-binding thing as I aimlessly wandered about for a while midway before I figured it out. Guess that's what happens when you're not used to such a mechanic.

Well, I'm happy. It was totally worth it. Looking forward to tackling Ep 2 later tonight. :)
Great release, GOG! I wonder how long I can resist before I finally buy it. I took my credit card out of my wallet twice today and finally put it back, because I said to myself that I spent to much money on games.

So wishlisted for now (but I'll probably buy it before the release discount ends).
