Say goodbye to sunlight.

Avernum: The Complete Saga, a collection of seven epic-scaled old-school role playing games featuring an original setting and story-driven gameplay, is available on GOG.com, for only $7.99. That's 33% off for a whole week!

For a computer game, it's quite impossible to recreate what pen & paper role playing games offer--endless adventures in a land of possibilities limited only by one's imagination. That's why most computer RPGs don't even try to reach that goal. The Avernum series is different that way. It tries. And--I'll be damned--it does not fall all that short. Its inconceivable complexity and supreme storytelling is on pair, or even surpasses most of the all-time favorite cRPG classics. Over the course of seven games the saga succeeded in developing one of the most original fantastic realm and fill it with innumerable characters that live their lives, pursue their goals, and leave a mark on the ever-evolving environment. If you thought you knew the computer role playing genre by heart, but somehow you managed to miss this monumental game, you're up for a big and pleasant surprise.

Avernum: The Complete Saga tells an epic story of an underground prison colony. A place of exile for empire's banished citizens, outcasts, criminals, and bastards, that becomes a thriving kingdom of its own over the course of hundreds of years of existence. Each chapter presents a turning point in Avernum's history placing the player's party of adventurers at the center of events, making them overthrow tyrants, defend the land from vile demons, discover ominous schemes, meet strange creatures, and accumulate the power needed to change the fate itself. The series consists of two lengthy trilogies, hundreds of hours worth of gameplay each, and an additional title, The Blades of Avernum, that gives you six shorter additional scenarios and a tool to design your own adventures, prolonging your experience indefinitely. With traditional, old-school isometric presentation, tactical turn-based combat, huge gameworld, and many hundreds of quests to complete while following the captivating story, Avernum: The Complete Saga gives any hardcore RPG gamer the best value for their money!

Prepare to be drawn into one of the most immersive cRPG experiences of our times. Venture boldly into the epic, but eerie underground realm of Avernum: The Complete Saga, for only $7.99 until Tuesday, January 22, at 10:59AM GMT.
Is this really only the second Spiderweb release here? I could have sword we already had 2...
Oh, I said goodbye to sunlight last summer when I bought Morrowind :)

But thanks for releasing this. I'll buy it once I've played through the Geneforge saga and Escape from the Pit, and need another turn based roleplay. Spiderweb seems to have found a specific game genre which a lot of people enjoy, and is sticking to it.
All Right! New Releases = Happy Me! Thanks, GOG!

Mccy_McFlinn: Wow I've heard of people giving away excess copies of things but never of someone outright purchasing a game for something out of the goodness of their own heart. Kudos.

Who knew that all one had to do was ask, hey?
I REALLY WISH i HAD A BAJILLION GOLD PIECES!!

(OotS #69 for those who need a reference, but it won't be any less confusing unless you read previous strips. I recommend it tho, it's as awesome as a D&D comic gets to be)

OT: I don't think I'll buy this game anytime soon, I mean it does look nice but I still have way too many unopened RPGs on my shelf... including Geneforge.

I guess it'll have to wait until I win the lottery and quit my job to dedicate myself to gaming.
Wishlisted.

ShaolinsKunk: I've got Genefroge and even though I've only just cracked it open it already feels like I'll get a lot of enjoyment out of them.

Seeing as how Avernum is from the same developer these intrigue me.....

Can anyone familiar with the two series tell me how it compares with Geneforge?
edit: ha, ninja'd.
They are similar in many ways (though not identical). The big difference, other than the setting, is that Avernum is party based, and you get to customize 4 different characters, which is less unique than Geneforge's summoning mechanic, but allows for a more individualized party.
And while the setting is not as interesting as in Geneforge, it is still interesting. The entire game takes place in a huge underground cave system, which prisoners and other "undesirable" elements of society gets exiled (a bit similar to Gothic 1 in this regard, though society is more advanced in Avernum).

One_of_Many: Does Avernum cost $12 (without discounts)? When did GOG change its price policy ($6, $10, $15, $20, etc.)?
I think after $10, they are starting to just "roll with it" from there. I preferred the other way, but I think most people don't really care.

Still, we did get two+ sets of Good Old Games today! :)
Thank you.
Nice release. A great set of games.
Man, I just got Avernum 4-6 from Steam not more than 2 weeks ago. Started playing 4 and like it a lot. Anything special about 1-3 really or can these be passed on as they don't add much to the latter 3 games in the series?
Ooh, very nice. I had mixed feelings about Geneforge (excellent world, but I found it a bit painful to play), but I hear these are generally supposed to play better. I'll probably get them at some point.
Wonderful! Will certainly want it for Avernum 1~3 and Blade of Avernum
Now.....will we get Exile too one day?

Yeah, simmilar situation here, so I'm curious.

Especially aggravating since steam's 4-6 costs the same as gog's 1-6 !

rampancy: After reading through the Spiderweb forums, I realized that the optimal way to play was to actually play both sides, lying about achieving objectives or just outright killing people who was I supposed to save, and saving people I was supposed to kill – thus getting the rewards, items, and bonuses from both sides. I can't put my finger on it, but that really bothered me.
I'm guessing that would be the "power gamer" way of playing, or maybe roleplaying a neutral evil character who is only in it for their own gain. It is good that the game gives you that freedom, but any way you choose to play it is the right way.

I've only played the first 2 games so far.

I played the first game allied to the Awakened. I played the second game with the intention of starting out as a loyal Shaper who after seeing the way things are comes over to the Awakened side of thinking, but based on actions taken in the early game they wouldn't trust me. By the time I found the way to change their minds, it was way too late - certain things cannot be taken back.

I really should go back and finish Geneforge 2. I'm somewhere in the end game, but the heavy combat and my physically weak Shaper's encumbrance are making it a bit of a chore.

IIRC Spiderweb Software offers them directly for download: http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/productsOld.html

Older versions can be found for download in their forums, with the only changes being graphical. That said, I don't think the Exile games are still sold, nor are they concerned about it.
