Grargar: Just tried installing the game without connection and the GalaxyClient program is still installed.
Yeah, this version still has the beta version of Galaxy unfortunately. I was hoping GOG would release a stand-alone version of AvP 2000.

Crosmando: So how does the GOG version work with mods? In particular the "Redux" mod, does it screw up the multiplayer?

Also is the version now different from when this was first given away free?
I haven't tried it since some of the old, original GOG Galaxy beta test versions that were put up (e.g. 2.0.0.1x; from what others are saying, the 2.0.0.25 release is the latest, and is the same as the release version), but when I tried to install the Redux mod on the GOG version, the game simply refused to launch. I always found that odd, as I also have the game from DotEmu, and IIRC, the Redux mod works just fine with DotEmu's release of the game.

This was on a WINE installation though, so YMMV. I don't recall reading about anyone who tried using the Redux mod, last I check on the AvP forums.

Fever_Discordia: "Aliens Vs. Predator 2: even though the 1st one is on GOG this was developed by Monolith and Published by Activision, Monolith are closely tied with WB these days and the Aliens franchise is with Sega so it looks a mess"

So I'm pretty pessimistic but, I'm not employed by GOG or anything, I'm just on the outside looking in, same as everyone else...
While it's true that the rights are a mess, I'd be willing to bet that Night Dive may be working on this one (and weren't they working on NOLF or something in the past?). I personally think that if they could bring back SS2, they could bring anything back...
So, this "new" release of AvP which has been on DotEmu for years at far lower price than here - I got it at around $1 in sales - also has Steam (sorry, GOG) Galaxy client pre-fixed in the installer. Doesn't anyone else see a dangerous precedent here.
Not saying they shouldn't have removed it from base installer and into separate one, but calling it 'steam' is excessive. It's simply multiplayer component, how about you simply uninstall galaxy (it has separate programs entry, and can be removed separately) after installing the game? The game works perfectly fine in singleplayer with it removed from the system, just use non galaxy shortcut.

ReynardFox: This really ticked me off as it wasted writes on my SSD, and I don't take kindly to auto-installers or progs with non-selectable install locations.
Get a proper HD :D

Downloaded the game.
Installed
It installed 2 x Visual c distributables.
Tried running the game.
Closed right away with a galaxy error. Way to go. Send report doesnt seem to work properly either. "Galaxy Client has stopped responding"
So when can i have a working game? (only want to try the single player)

(tried the old reinstall trick... no cigar. Sounds like its a bit broken for some like me...)

Update
Looks like it *works* when you launch the game from the AvP_classic executable but not the Aliens v Predator Classic 2000 desktop shortcut thats created on the desktop aafter installation for some reason. How on earth is someone who buy this to know to do it that way?.

Some people here really have problem understanding that no third party is installed, only the game + multiplayer component for game that has no multiplayer support at all in Classic 2000 re-edition beside Steam and this is replacement of MP feature needed to play multi. However maybe because of that or fact that game is marketed as one with multi, unfinished client itself or older installer version without option to select if you want install multiplayer component or not so it's matter of time before they change that and all-is-crime-and-suspicious-mentality without understanding what is this for on GOG, well you could have more trust in them, not prejudice based on misinformation.

Hm for some reason desktop shortcut is galaxy shortcut, you have a normal non galaxy shortcut in start menu (in fact you have them both), that would work even with galaxy uninstalled.

It really should be the other way around, as it's obviously making people believe galaxy is mandatory, altogether with lack of ability to opt out of its initial installation in the first place. The original setup was made so it was as easy as possible to get galaxy+mp testing going, but it's clearly causing issues now.

Yes, many people do see a "dangerous precedent" here because they don't give enough thought to what is actually happening here. Obviously the way AvP is distributed is a somewhat clunky temporary method until Galaxy is actually launched. The way the client is installed cannot possibly be how it's intended to work once everything's finished.

Also, DotEmu AvP 2000 doesn't have working online multiplayer, does it?

They really should have two shortcuts on desktop - one for SP one for MP. darn easier than looking in two different places (i think Galaxy is borked on my computer)

Yeah, even better that way. And I dunno, at one point my galaxy client broke at/after installing ToME (which has nothing to do with galaxy at all). I had a slight suspicion it gets broken if you hit 'launch game' at the end of installer on games that don't have galaxy support, somehow breaking the configuration. Just a hunch, I'm talking out of my ass, but maybe the launch game call from installer is borking the client even on avp installer too?

Yes, your right no MP on the DotEmu version. A simple option to only install components required would fix this, e.g. the manuals come in PDF sometimes, don't want to find Adobe Reader installed on my machine. Just provide the option of what to install.

GOG's AvP launch. A true dissapointment
Sigh. I'd love to defend them, but frankly they rushed this out. Regarding the launcher, it's really no different than any of the other - annoying - redistributables that get automatically installed. However, not only is it still a product IN BETA, but it could easily have been stripped out: simply remove the one mention of multi-player in the game description. This is a perfect example how such redistributable components ought to be installed separately.

I get the feeling that, for some inexplicable reason, GOG have been almost entirely inattentive to people's reports, discussions, and suggestions for the past week or two - specifically regarding AvP. Which can come to bite them right back, given an outstanding question of copyright...
Or they could change the point at where the game checks for GOG Galaxy and leave LAN Play alone. There are several ways to fix this crap.
I don't mind having to log in to use someone's game servers or network services, but doing it for LAN? It defeats the whole purpose of LAN Play.
And if they keep ignoring the issue , thing will only get worse, since now people are actually PAYING for the game, like I did, instead of helping them test a new service.
