Best. Cover. Art. Ever.

7th Legion, a futuristic real-time strategy game with a great selection of units to lead into battle over the course of 35 extensive and challenging missions, is available on GOG.com for only $5.99.

Centuries of reckless consumption and overpopulation had brought the Earth's ecosystem to the brink of collapse. In desperation, governments of the world developed an interstellar Evacuation Program granting exit passes only to the most privileged segments of society. The poor and common were left behind to perish. Now centuries later, the "Chosen" have decided to return to Earth and assume control. But there's a catch - the 7th Legion is waiting with a powerful and fiery "welcome home" BBQ planned in their honor.

7th Legion is an excellent RTS title featuring endless strategic choices and timed sub-missions in a futuristic war-torn world. You get to play command either the 7th Legion or the Chosen in over 35 feverish finger-blistering combat missions. Over 50 Battle Cards and 20 power-ups may instantly turn the tide of battle. Progressive technology levels reveal advanced buildings, units and weapons. Ruthless mercenaries get smarter as they collect mutilated bodies for cold hard cash. The game comes with a full MP3 soundtrack!

Even though it did sport the most awesome game cover art of the 1990s, 7th Legion--released a little bit after Command and Conquer: Red Alert-- was overlooked by many strategy fans. If you had the misfortune of being one of them, or if you do remember 7th Legion fondly, get it now on GOG.com for only $5.99!
7th Legion is one of those games I have a kinda strange relationship with, I absolutely love it, but it's fundamentally flawed when it comes to many of the core mechanics of an RTS. The atmosphere, cutscenes and music are outstanding, but the pathfinding is poor, and the card game system is very unbalanced.
But, damn, Blair Zuppicich is truly one of the greatest video game composers, it's just sad that all his music has been limited to games that have been average at best.

Hate to disagree with you there, GOG - the cover is pretty cool, but it's no Entomorph. Although I guess if you allow that Entomorph is more of an eighties cover "in spirit", they can coexist. :p

I would love to see GOG uploading high-res scans of box art as an extra for games, though.

Oh, and this game looks fun, will probably check it out at some point.
Oh wow, an older Epic Game is being released? Does that mean we might see other titles such as Fire Fight (which refused to install from CD for me), or perhaps even older Megagames like Jazz Jackrabbit???

Austrobogulator: I'd pick any of the Roger Dean covers over this game's cover.
+1 for that. Though I favour Roger Dean's art over a lot of things.
Generally speaking, this game is not my type (and thus both my backlog and my wish list are spared), but for RTS lovers everywhere: Enjoy!

Kudos to GOG for bringing yet another oldie to the catalog.

tinyE: As an RTS fiend games like this are great I just hope someone looking to try out the genre for the first time don't decide on this one to bust their cherry.
Oh, my dear Cthulu -- Always love reading your posts! You just have a way of phrasing things...
Hey, does anyone else remember the ad they ran in the magazines for this game? It was very similar to the cover art, only he was flipping someone the bird while kicking in/shooting off their face.

JudasIscariot: You're welcome :)

Enjoy the game :)
The music is in FastTracker II (XM) format, it's a common format in the MOD music family of file formats, and can be played very accurately in Foobar 2000 (which can also convert to FLAC format). That said, the samples used in the music are likely only in 22khz/mono, so you wouldn't get much more out of a lossless format in this case.

Yeah, I really want to experience that wave of C&C clones we had in the 90's, I couldn't afford a lot of them when the genre was at it's peak, and regardless of the quality I'd really love to try all of them out. But as you say, for us RTS fans that's the dream, but if someone who has never played an RTS before grabs one of them they may not stick with the genre. Of course, GOG's got that fancy GOGMixes system if someone really wants to get a list of the best the genre has to offer.

If you are interested I found a really nice free installer for RA 1. Obviously you need the disc but it takes all the compatibility hassles away and polishes it up pretty nice.

Sorry about the derail folks. :D

I do own the less than stellar Command & Conquer Ultimate Collection on Origin, and have tried OpenRA out, which ports of the files to an more modern OS friendly engine, though that lacks all singleplayer content.

That OpenRA one is no good IMO, try this one. The URL is from a forum and has a link for the download at the end. All the SP you could ever want.
Now when you have the 7th Legion intro fresh in mind, isn't it remarkably similar to the intro for Killzone (PS2), released in 2006? The base premise is the same, with the Chosen (Helghast) leaving Earth for it to recover from overpopulation, and then returning to reclaim Earth many years later, having taken on Nazi imagery, genetic engineering and being unable to breathe without masks, both intro's feature an charismatic leader holding a speech for the forces as they prepare the attack, and then a montage of them mowing down civilians and stuff like that, as well as similar shots of their colony ships approaching Earth:

Yep, pretty similar. Maybe some of the same designers worked on them?

Vision Software (7th Legion) was an New Zeeland based developer, and Guerrilla who made Killzone are based in the Netherlands, as far as I can see, none of the credited worked on both.
Great news!! congrats to GOG itself for being cooler every day

As much as I would also love those games coming here, don't expect them anytime soon. Remember this is a tommo release, not an epic release.

For a full list of games tommo accquired, check this post http://www.gog.com/forum/general/is_everything_ok_gog/post114 anything there has a good chance of coming to gog soon
