Best. Cover. Art. Ever.

7th Legion, a futuristic real-time strategy game with a great selection of units to lead into battle over the course of 35 extensive and challenging missions, is available on GOG.com for only $5.99.

Centuries of reckless consumption and overpopulation had brought the Earth's ecosystem to the brink of collapse. In desperation, governments of the world developed an interstellar Evacuation Program granting exit passes only to the most privileged segments of society. The poor and common were left behind to perish. Now centuries later, the "Chosen" have decided to return to Earth and assume control. But there's a catch - the 7th Legion is waiting with a powerful and fiery "welcome home" BBQ planned in their honor.

7th Legion is an excellent RTS title featuring endless strategic choices and timed sub-missions in a futuristic war-torn world. You get to play command either the 7th Legion or the Chosen in over 35 feverish finger-blistering combat missions. Over 50 Battle Cards and 20 power-ups may instantly turn the tide of battle. Progressive technology levels reveal advanced buildings, units and weapons. Ruthless mercenaries get smarter as they collect mutilated bodies for cold hard cash. The game comes with a full MP3 soundtrack!

Even though it did sport the most awesome game cover art of the 1990s, 7th Legion--released a little bit after Command and Conquer: Red Alert-- was overlooked by many strategy fans. If you had the misfortune of being one of them, or if you do remember 7th Legion fondly, get it now on GOG.com for only $5.99!
never heard of this. can't imagine epic making an rts...
As an RTS fiend games like this are great I just hope someone looking to try out the genre for the first time don't decide on this one to bust their cherry.

Totally slipped under my radar at the time, but I'm glad to see it here. :)
Awesome game! Thanks for this release.
Nice, another Tommo game!

Of course, still pushing for the Humongous games via Tommo! ;)

Niggles: Nice release

Note - the one review i can see for it on GOG probably isnt by someone who actually bought it here....
It rubs me the wrong way when people drop reviews just a few hours after release, mostly when it's a bad one since GOG is supposed to be all about nostalgic glee anyway and some positive reviews reflect that (and may be good for sales). It's just not enough time to justify a purchase and a game itself, and if someone had a bad experience years ago or through another purchase (or even emulation or pirated copy) medium, who's to say the GOG version is the same thing? GOG works so hard to release the best, bug-free versions of games. Many of the old games work better NOW then they did years ago thanks to their efforts and the people working with them.

Ugh.

That said though, a "fair" negative review is ok if the release was botched in it's newer format, especially if there was a lot of hype around it or if it's a new title anyway. As long as it's a genuine review and not one based on personal bias from yesteryear. That just ain't fair.

Tommo's on a roll! I wonder what they'll release next?

I also wonder when and if Z will, seeing so many folks want that here and it was the other supposed hinted game the other week when some guessed 7th Legion :) (I've never played Z though... or 7th Legion! ;O )

I might score 7th Legion sooner than later myself.

Is it exceptionally hard, or is it just not exactly the "cream of the crop"?

Personally someone new to RTS, I might recommend Empire Earth, maybe the second one since the AI is slightly dumbed down and there's more choices and updates.

Snap, I never got to play this in the day. Is the leveling up system similar to the WarWind series (Hint hint GOG ;) ).
Glad to see another classic release here, even though it's one where I personally am not interested. These days I know if a game calls itself real time strategy I'm more likely than not to find it frustrating so it's not for me, but I hope others are able to enjoy this one!

It's just not the cream, like you said, and I was never a fan of 'cards' in games. Some games are built on them and based on card games so yes they have a fan base and deserved place in gaming, just not in RTS in my opinion. Also remember, my taste is dubious at best; I love a lot of crap. :P

...Good to know!

As I said here I totally agree that making a review for a new game that was released just a few minutes ago (and wasn't available anywhere else!) is extremely stupid. But for a classic game I think it's not only acceptable but can be beneficial. There are of course certain requirements. Reviewer shouldn't complain about game crashing bugs because as you wrote it - he/she don't know whether those bugs are present in GOG version or not. But honestly I don't see a problem when he/she is complaining about the actual gameplay.

Let me give you an example: if GOG released Blood & Magic I wouldn't buy it because I already have a boxed version and I think the game is a really, really bad. Not because of technical issues, crashes and bugs but because it was terribly designed. Most probably I would add a review immediately after the release where I would point out what could be expected - that a game has its charm, many interesting ideas but their implementation is just terrible. Would it be bad if I did so? Let me emphasize that this game cannot be simply patched to make it playable. There are so many gameplay issues there that somebody would have to remake this game to make it good. In other words: I would be 99% sure that those terrible things were still there even If I didn't try GOG version. Would that be bad to warn others that the game is like that?
Heh. I played the demo way back in the day. It seemed fairly fun, but I was easier to please back then. I remember being disappointed that the demo didn't include one of the infantry-only infiltration missions.

For you, that might be what GOG is about. For me, GOG is about playing good games that I missed due to playing only consoles growing up*. The reviewer isn't the only person who didn't think this game was any great shakes--it's sitting at a mediocre 3.5 stars with 14 ratings in--and his or her review explaining at least one reason why is a heck of a lot more useful to me then nostalgic glee for a game I have no nostalgia about ever could be.

* And, now, playing some good recent releases as well.

I'm saying nothing wrong here, and it's not a fair review. Your just as opinionated as the next reviewer and as opinionated as me, but also reviews at 3.5 are nothing to gawk at, and that's a bit above mediocre. All I want to see is people reviewing with honesty and integrity, and if it's a bad review, I want them to justify it and have it make complete sense. And I never leave a review about nostalgia. I merely quoted what other people have done often on reviews, and it's not always reflecting the up to date edition of whatever classic was revamped but on past experiences.

I want to say, thank you for bringing back a game I actually played when I was young, though not 1997 since I was like 3 years old at that time, but I remember getting this game from a garage sale. Sure this game doesn't play well but it has so much potential that it's a game I consider so bad it's good. Also, the cover and music is amazing
