California dreamin'

1849 a city management sim set during the California Gold Rush that captivated millions to seek fame and wealth, is available on GOG.com for $12.74 (15% off the full price) until 9:59 AM GMT on 15 May 2014.

1849 is a memorable year in American history. It put a little town known as San Francisco on the map and transformed it into a boomtown. Thousands of gold seekers from all over the world, colloquially known as forty-niners, came to the territory of California looking to stake their own claim. It's because of this mad rush for gold that California has become known as a place where wealth can be found by sheer luck and audacity.

1849 follows the California Gold Rush as you start with a humble settlement and work to make it a booming, bustling center of trade. Hire workers, build a wide variety of buildings--ranging from saloons to humble workers' houses--and even manage trade networks.

Head west and strike it rich with 1849 for $12.74 (15% off the full price) before 9:59 AM GMT on 15 May 2014. 100% DRM-free ga-ron-teed, pardner.

Asbeau: $5 on the App Store and $15 on GOG and Steam, and the only difference is Sandbox mode? Glad I got it from IGS.

IAmSinistar: So it is. Though the Android version mentions IAPs, which are anathema to me. Sorry I missed the IGS offer now, seems like it was the best of all options.
According to the dev posting on the game's Steam forum, there are no IAPs in any version of the game and the store listing is wrong. They really should get that changed, it must be hurting sales.

Thanks for the clarification. They should indeed revise that.

blotunga: Cool, another city management...
And still, where the hell is Empire: Rise of the Middle Kingdom, I've been wanting to play that game ever since I've first heard of it.
Same here - I want to complete my collection

Might be a dumb question, but what does IAP mean?

In-App Purchase.

rottenborough: In-App Purchase.
Thank you!
My first impression when looking at the city design screenshot was that it would fit well as a browser game or smartphone app and indeed it's like this. The price difference to the smartphone version (factor 3) and the mentioned simplicity are showstoppers.

I want a challenging game that is fair priced. This doesn't seem like it.

So, this begs a dumb question.
Why are the PC ports of mobile games so darn much higher priced?
It's the only thing keeping me from grabbing this game. :/

To make the inevitable humble bundle (Or equivalent) it will one day appear in look more enticing.

Because ther are no In-App Purchases in the PC port.

There aren't any in the mobile port either.

Because they charge what they think people will pay. And nobody on a smartphone will pay 15 bucks for this game. There are literally millions of other games and far cheaper too. Of course they ruin the prices for PC as well because people are actually not stupid and can compare prices.

My prediction: This game will sell really bad here on GOG. Not only will people rather buy the smartphone version or not buy on PC now, but also it will get really bad ratings because of the high price.

Economically it's a bad decision but they can do what they want. It's their business.

Yeah, my first thought was 'because they can', stupid move but I guess true. ;)
Just saw on steam forums what the reason for such a high price difference is. By the statement of the developer: "PC version has a sandbox mode which is not included in the tablet version of the game and also different UI". But im not sure that these features are worth the price difference. Its still a mobile game.
