This is a really good game.

This game reminds me of Quake 4. When Q4 came out it got a lot of reviews bashing it for being "old" and "linear" and "the same old thing." None of that mattered dick to me though, I was thrilled to get another fast-paced Quake FPS that was polished and fun to play.

Similarly RF:A is smooth, polished and fun to play, yet the reviews concentrate on it being "linear" and "not like the last game" and "about aliens." It misses the point, this is a great shooter in a certain style. Don't like that style? Don't play it! Don't act like the style itself is flawed though, there is nothing inherently wrong with linear alien shooters just because you personally don't like them.
I think we need more linear alien shooters. God knows we're hitting the saturation point for linear terrorist/Russian shooters. It's all cyclic, after all.

Linear seems to have become the colloquial code of game reviewers for "I'm too lazy to do my job right now so I'll just grab a term out of the overused cliche thing to bitch about bin".

Falci: Talking about original ways...

I finished the original Red Faction yesterday. Turned out to be a much fun FPS, though I barelly payed attention to the destructible enviroments. Since they're not always destructible, I ended up only trying to do it when it was blatantly obvious that I needed it to proceed.

The gameplay and campaign structure reminded me of Half Life and a few modern FPSs, being an almost continuous travel from point Start to point Ending. Also, all those vehicular levels, even though the levels themselves were kinda bland, the driving, diving, flying was entertaining.

Too bad I ended up using some of the better endgame guns too little, like the railgun and the massive rocket launcher.
The campaign was great. I thought the shooting bits were passable* in RF1 but the stiff time limit for escaping areas and that stupid bomb made me want to scream. I found RF1 geomod very impressive but it was hardly ever useful (that poor APC though ;).

* Bots tend to jump all over the place encouraging bullet spam over precision shots. I suspect their AI was written with consoles in mind where a little bit of aim assist could make all the difference.
It was a huge mistake to release this during E3. If it were any other week, I would have heard about the release, but now all the gaming sites are dominated by E3.

As for the game itself, I'm not going to just blindly buy it without a demo, especially if it's not a sandbox game.

There's a demo on OnLive.

Free? I'll have to check it out.

Yes. You just need a fast connection. I'm pretty satisfies with it, to be honest. Not going to shell out money to buy games on OnLive, but it's fun to try out the trials, especially when, like me, your computer can't run the game in the first place.

I outright despise the idea of "buying" games on a streaming service, but it's an excellent idea for demos. I love the idea of clicking an ad for a game and having a demo launch right there like a browser window.

I tried it with Mass Effect 2 using Gakai, a service like OnLive that is focused on demos for marketing purposes rather than fulll games. It was a great idea but the performance was suspect... I look forward to giving it another go someday.
