Ok guys, I could use your help here. Seeing as I'm nearing completion of yet another great RPG (namingly Gothic 2) I could do with a few suggestions as to which game I should check out next. What I'm mainly looking for is a game which is generally fun to play, graphics don’t really matter (2D/3D it’s all good). The game also doesn’t have to be an RPG in a strict sense of the word. It can be a blend of several genres. Just as long as the game in itself is fun. You can also recommend an expansion to any of the games that are mentioned in the list to which no expansions have been mentioned. When recommending a game its appreciated if you can tell me a little about it. Explain why it is fun and if possible provide a link to a homepage or a demo. Here are the RPGs I've already played (or at least can recollect to the best of my memory right now):
Neverwinter Nights 1 (plus expansions)/2
Baldur's Gate 2
Icewind Dale 2
Fallout 1/2/Tactics/3
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (plus expansions)
The Elder Scrolls IV:(plus expansions)
Mass Effect
KOTOR1
Diablo 1/2 (plus expansions)
Gothic1/2
Temple of Elemental Evil
Deus Ex 1/2
Fable 1/2
Titan Quest (plus expansion)
Planescape: Torment
Dead Space
Guild Wars (plus expansions)
BioShock
Jade Empire
Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
List of games that I'm going to give a try to based on the recommendations in the thread:
Arcanum (if its like Fallout 2 than I'm definitely interested)
Anachronox (I saw a couple of videos and was intrigued, if I can find a copy I'll give it a try)
System Shock 2 (I played the demo of it before but was never able to find an actual copy, still looking though as it seems like a game I would definitely enjoy)
Witcher (just waiting for 360 relese)
Age of Decadence (thats a very interesting setting that game has)
Thanks to everyone for contributing and keep the discussion going, this is shaping up to be a fantastic thread.

Did you take a look at the Witcher?
It is from CD Project, who have brought us this magnificent site you're now posting on.
more info and probably demo as well you can find here

How about old school JRPG's ?
Final Fantasy <7
Dragon quest
Earthbound
Chrono Trigger
(Knights of Xentar 3)
Story wise I thought Earthbound and Chrono Trigger were the best.
Or how about Nethack and derivatives.
For older PC RPG's I recommend Betrayal at Krondor which had a nice battle system and story or Lands of Lore (with the voice of Cpt. Picard as the king).
Or TES 2: Daggerfall very buggy not an interesting story but huge possibilities for skills, items and magic.

I'd recommend these:
- Anachronox (hard to find though)
- Stonekeep (available on GOG)
- Lands of Lore series
- Ultima series (especially the fourth, it's freeware and unique)
If you like Console RPGs, I can recommend the Shin Megami Tensei Persona series.

Yup. Unfortunately my laptop cant handle it at all well so I'm waiting for a console release later this year. As for JRPGs I don't know, I've never played one before. I'm not entirely sure if its really my thing. I am somewhat looking forward to Final Fantasy 13 though.

Hmm I heard a lot of good things about Anachronox so yeah I might give it a try if I can get my hands on it. My consoles amount to XBox360 and DS Lite so Persona is out of the question (though it does look tempting).

what about mount and blade or two worlds?
I'm not clear from your post if you've played the expansions for NWN2. If not, I'd highly recommend both of those. Mask of the Betrayer takes you into epic levels and has a pretty good story to it. Storm of Zehir is a lower level campaign and is light on the story side, but some of the new game mechanics are awesome and overall it's a really fun expansion.
Perhaps Divine Divinity. It's in the vein of Gothic and supposedly there's going to be a sequel in the not too distant future.
Sacred Gold. Pick it up right here on GoG. I bought it a while back but haven't fired it up yet (too many other games on the go at the moment).
As noted, if you haven't played The Witcher, you should.
Finally, not an RPG, but well worth the 20 bucks, as it's an awesome puzzle/engineering game (if you like that type): World of Goo.
you must play troika's two greatest games.
Arcanum
Vampire Masquerade: Bloodlines (available on steam and d2d)
remember to install unofficial patch for both of them.

+1 on this. I just bought the Witcher a week or two ago and it is fantastic, well worth the $40.
Since you already played KotOR 1, you might want to check out KotOR 2. Some would say KotOR 2 has a bit more depth than the first game, both in story and gameplay, but it does suffer from some glaring bugs and has a "meh" ending.
Additionally, since you have tried quite a few BioWare RPGs, maybe Jade Empire would also be to your liking.

darthcobley: what about mount and blade or two worlds?
I took a hard look at mount and blade when they had it on weekend sale on steam and decided not to. It seems to me that its more of a Strategy RPG and I personally don't like to have to manage a large squad of warriors.I also tried a demo of two worlds when it hit 360 and it just seemed too awkward to me so I think I'll pass on that one. :(

Totally forgot about mentioning Mount & Blade, the best RPG-ish medieval combat simulator ever with satisfactory horseback combat as well.

I'm highly interested in arcanum but I dont know much about it to decide if I'd like it or not. Oh and I played Bloodlines (I knew Id forget something, great game). Added it to my OP.

I heard its somewhat incomplete or something (KOTOR2). Or its worse than original, any truth to that? Oh and already played Jade Empire (included it in OP now, thanks for reminder).

Nope only played expansions for NWN1. But I no longer have a copy of NWN2 so I'd have to pick that up too than. Is there like a bundle with expansions included? Oh and Mask of the Betrayer, wasnt that a plug-in for NWN1?

arcanum is kinda like fallout 2. great world, some very awesome characters but it does have own problems. balance between magic and technology is one thing.
but hey
game features brothel with a shy girl, an experienced girl, a girl which you can beat up, and a girl-ogre who will beat YOU up.
and you can shag all of them.
so yeah. game is really worth checking out.
I personally loved KOTOR2 more than KOTOR1. 1 is better SW experienced but number 2 is just so much more awesome on so many levels. and it features one of most complex and my favorite game character: Kreia.
You gotta play it and then you will wait impatiently for teamgizka to finish their mod.

No, Mask of the Betrayer is the first NWN2 expansion. You can get NWN2 and MotB as a bundle in the NWN2 Gold edition.

It is partially true. The game was rushed out the door for a Christmas release by LucasArts and Obsidian was forced to make some dramatic cuts from the game to accomplish that (they removed an entire planet, for one). That's why the ending is so "meh" and part of the reason for the bugs. However, the story itself is much darker and more deep that the first game, plus the adjustments to gameplay, such as the ability to create items and upgrades, the party influence system and the ability to turn your party members into Jedi, more than make up for the flaws, IMO.
There is a mod in the works that will eventually restore much of the content that Obsidian cut from the game (they actually left most of the content in the game files, including voiceovers) and fix a large portion of the remaining bugs. Once released, that will make KotOR 2 doubly worth it.

Yeah, sorry I confused it with King Maker (think thats the name of that NWN1 plug-in).

Heh, sounds interesting I might have to check it out (I loved the combat system in Fallout 1/2). Is there anywhere I might still be able to pick it up?
