ALUNDRA AND PARASITE EVE 1&2
go get them!
Too bad you got bored by Vagrant Story, it was really interesting and, at that time, it was refreshing to see Square doing something far away from FF.

Tantrix: ALUNDRA AND PARASITE EVE 1&2
go get them!

Don't get 2 -- it's a lot more action and a lot less RPG.
Dear God! this thread reminded me of a whole lot of games I want to play again... or finish for that matter. I started playing FF9 before I moved, but didn't continue after... and that was a year ago :) Gonna finish 9 after I'm done with 13.
Anyway, even though you got bored I think you should try finishing Paraiste Eve (awesome, awesome game) and Chrono Cross (probably my favorite jRPG ever). In both games the story is great and there are a lot of reasons to replay the games later - multiple endings in Chrono Cross and the Chrysler Building in PE.
Damn, I hope those two games get released on the PSN. I have disc verions of both, but I would love to play them on the PSP. I even got an NTSC PSOne to play them (and Brave Fencer Musashiden). Damn those bastards at Square didn't release so many excellent games in Europe... damn them.
Xmen: Legends
Baldurs Gate: Alliances
Gaia 2

Tactics Ogre
Parasite Eve 2 is maybe more action, but they lifted the repetive tactical timing aspect I didn't enjoyed much in the first.
If you happen to like Kingdom Hearts, Threads of Fate is a Squaresoft game which used the same combat formular before. 2 Playable characters, similar storyline but with different direction. Really funny.
Lunar 1&2 are nice turn-based RPGs with the cute 2D-Chibistyle back in the Snes.
Chronotrigerr? No doubt worth it.
Also, the PSX-adaption Tales of Phantasia turned out rather good. Less shrubby CPU and better graphics.
What else...OH YEAH, get Suikoden 1&2.
Really memorable characters, and some really fucked up villains in the second game.
First of all, thank you all for the replies!

My problem with Chrono Cross is the way it handles party members. You meet somebody, you enjoy his/her brief introduction story and puff, that's it. Character development does not exist. I didn't really like the battle system either. Actually, if you check people's opinions out there in the internet you'll see that they are very different. It's one of those "love it or hate it". I just grew tired of it. Oh and I wasn't really fond of the battle mechanics. Overall I think that Chrono Trigger is much better.
As for PE, I think you're right. I might give it another shot. I love the atmosphere in the game, Squeenix would be wise to bring the franchise back to life.

Vagrant Story, it's weapon crafting system in particular, reminds me too much of the vanilla Oblivion leveling system. That is, without a guide on your first play-through you'll make a mess of everything.
I've heard the SaGa games are good. Legend of Mana is awesome, too.
What about FFTactics (particularly the PSP remake, War of the Lions?) and Front Mission 3 (wanzers!)?

I did play SaGa Frontier 2 back in the days but I can't remember crap about it apart from the fact that it had a really cool visual style :P. As for LoM, I finished it. My brother is an avid fan of the series, in fact he's playing it in this very moment.
I did forget to mention FM3 in my original post. I own it, I played it years ago and immensely liked it. I'd play it again but the problem is it doesn't work very well with PSP. Likes to crash during fights that makes it unplayable.
As for FFT, I own an imported ntsc psx version and the WotL as well. Tactics is one of my beloved games of all time with a plot that puts to shame most of the "regular" Final Fantasies. I've finished it over 4 times total.
What else...OH YEAH, get Suikoden 1&2 .
Really memorable characters, and some really fucked up villains in the second game.

I have Suikoden 1 which I found light years ago in some bargain bin of some God forsaken shop for a really pitiful amount of money. I loved it and finished it. Never got to play the second part though and somewhat lukewarm reviews put me off.
As I said, thank you very much! You've been very helpful. Now I need to choose something :P

rewsan: I'd recommend Wild Arms I really enjoyed it. I wouldn't bother with Legend of Dragoon it was a bit meh.
Have you tried the Breath of Fire games they we pretty good although I never finished either.

barjed: Actually I've never played any of the BoF games. Do you have any suggestions about which part is the best? Was it the 3rd?

Breath of fire 3 was awesome. Much better than 4.

In regards to CC - if you don't like it, you don't like it :) I loved the battle system, and it's true that most characters are just puppets without a purpose.
As for PE... well, SE is going to release Parasite Eve 3 for the PSP, but as with most "revived" franchises it's going to be a shadow of the previous titles - a third person shooter. I really hope it will at least have a decent plot.
BTW. Can anyone tell me if the PSP version of Breath of Fire 3 is any good?
Also, you guys made me really want to get Suikoden from the PSN and make my PSP a bit more useful again ;)

Really? I've never heard of it. Any source? I know of the new "Front Mission" that's being developed in the West.

You loved Tactics but didn't finish Vagrant Story!? What's wrong with you!? IT'S IVALICE! IT'S AWESOME! :D It just takes a bit of a different approach - a guide really isn't that needed, it's very logical - no point in piercing a zombie's flesh since he's undead - blunt weapons are the way to go; no point in hitting a dragon's scales, you should pierce through them for maximum damage, etc.
(OK, I can go on and on about VS, since it's one of my favorite games...)
I never liked Suikoden, though. The story is utterly boring, everything is so...bland. Never played a Tales of.. game either.
I heard of an early Square RPG called Live A Live, but I can't remember if it's for the PS1 or SNES. Or both. Supposedly it's good and strangely original.
Gonna have to go with Lunar Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar Eternal Blue Complete for PSX. I'm also biased since it was my favorite Sega CD game :P

Leukocyt: *snip*
BTW. Can anyone tell me if the PSP version of Breath of Fire 3 is any good?

I played both the PSX and PSP versions of BoF 3 , they're exactly the same. If you can get past the dated graphics it remains a very good jRPG.
As for PSX RPGs, along with the ones already mentioned, I'd recommend Star Ocean 2. The battle system is really different and you might not like it, but I found the real-time battles and the sci-fi elements refreshing.
Get Suikoden 2 if you can too, I found it great, but then I love more realistic (and sad) stories of war, instead of the classic "hero and his loyal companions save the world".
If you really like tacticals, then the one I enjoyed the most on PSX (along with FFT) was Front Mission 3 (for the same reason as I loved Suikoden I guess). Less good, but also less well-known (so it's less likely you already played them), there is Legend of Karta and Vandal Hearts 1 & 2.
