Hey guys and gals. I need your help to find a good shooter.

I'm looking for a shooter (preferably 1st person) without too much "distraction". I don't want to manage an inventory (something like in Deus Ex would be okay, but nothing more complicated), I don't want to run (or drive) around in an open world for hours and I don't want too much RPG elements. If there's some skill system, it shouldn't be more complicated than the one from Mass Effect. If there's an open world, it shouldn't be bigger than the one from Borderlands (which is divided in small areas and offers a lot of fast travel possibilities). If there are quests, they shouldn't be as tiny as in Rage (go to location, shoot around for 5 minutes, get back to town for reward -.-). And if there's dialog with choices and stuff, it shouldn't be on a Mass Effect scale...

I'm looking for some plain and simple shooting, without too many breaks because you have to travel around, think about your skills, your inventory, dialoge choices, blah blah blah. But it should have some kind of story (that's a 'no' for Doom and most of id's catalog). Something like the first Halo (that would be exactly what I'm looking for), or the first Half Life (not as puzzle-ish as Half Life 2). Or like Metro 2033 (forget about Last Light - I think my HD 6870 won't run it smoothly). Far Cry was okay as well, although the story was very weak. Something like Mass Effect, without controlling the actions of your party and without such parts like the first visit to citadel (lots of talking and running from A, to B, to C and back to A, just to go back to C and B again).

Graphics wise it should be at least on a level with Halo (I don't mind fuzzy textures, but enemies shouldn't look like a bad proportioned stickman like in Jedi Knight) and not more demanding than Metro 2033. I don't care that much for the price, as long as it isn't a € 50 game with a 5 hour singleplayer campaign (not interested in multiplayer). It shouldn't be THAT short anyway. 10 hours+ would be a good length. The only setting I really despise is WW2 and the modern "fight terrorists and commies" crap. I'm fine with zombies, aliens, dinosaurs, monsters, whatever. My favorite setting is Sci-Fi. Another requirement: The game should be available on GOG or Steam (can require additional accounts - I just don't want to throw around my credit card details everywhere).

Well, I think that's it... Any game recommendations? I've had a look at Crysis 1 and Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, but... I don't like watching too much Let's Plays of games I haven't played, so I don't know if those games would fit my requirements. Riddick looks a bit strange (lots of melee combat?!) and I haven't seen the movies (is it fun without knowing them?). Crysis... looks like Far Cry, but I've read stuff about Northkorean Army and US Special Forces, which sounds like... uhm... "Call of Battlefield 73: Future Soldier" or something like that. But what I saw didn't look like the generic "US Army vs. Evil Guys" stuff. So I don't know what to think about it.

Oh, yes, you're right! I said something about free games in the title... There are two games in the pot: System Shock 2 and Battle Realms + Winter of the Wolf. The "winner" (the user who suggests the game I'll play) can choose one of them. A random draw from all remaining entries will decide who gets the other game.

Thanks a lot for your help.
RED FACTION
RED FACTION
RED FACTION!!!!

Did I mention Red Faction?
It's not the prettiest but it's waaaay simple, runs fast and smooth, no bugs, guns sound great, and best of all no complicated puzzles....well there are a few stealth levels but they are pretty short. Another really cool thing is that your light doesn't run out of juice and get this....bad guys try to AVOID GETTING HIT! What a concept! :D

I have those games so give them to someone else, and then go get Red Faction.

I have ATI Radeon HD 6870 and Last Light ran quite well (even better than the first Metro). It was even before I upgraded my RAM to 6GB from 4GB. If there is a demo somewhere around you should give it a shot.
Basically you want NOLF. Or AvP. Or FEAR. That's tough luck because gog.com hates you and your kind.

Oh and also : Call of Cthulhu, Dark Corners of the Earth. But this is not helping either.

unreal
Have you tried Bioshocks (all 3 of them are great, but I liked Infinite the most)? Great story, action and locations. No inventory per se, no dialogues to interact with. But they are quite long (15hrs+ each), they have paranormal twist and plain joy of shooting :) You won't regret them :)

Spec Ops: The Line.

3rd person (not FPS), cover-based shooter. Doesn't have any inventory, you can carry two guns and their ammo. No real levelling system. Incredible story.

I started replaying Doom 3 yesterday. It is pretty straightforward, the graphics are decent while keeping the hardware needs in moderation, the atmosphere is good too. Basicly no RPG elements, the only riddles seem to be, to find a PDA every now and than to figure out the code for an extra weapons locker.

Doom 3 is okay but you think at a state of the art military/scientific installation they would be able to afford more dependable backup lighting!
Hard Reset is definitely the answer.

Also, I am not in.

Not to mention a marine who is unable to hold a gun and torch simultaneously. Although I hear they fixed that in the BFG edition.
I was actually recently talking with a friend of mine about a game we want to give a shot which doesn't come up in conversation a lot, Singularity.
If it ever goes on sale I'll probably pick it up, I played a 'demo' version back when it came out and it wasn't terrible.
This picture never gets old. XD

You could try the BFG Edition. I think they replaced the bulbs with something more powerful in that version. Besides, the flashlight is part of the armor and has enough power to nearly melt those pesky little creatures that jump on you.
Thing is: not a lot of the stuff you want here on GOG. Already people recommended a few good titles. I'll add Return to Castle Wolfesntein and Wolfenstein 2009. Crysis and his expansion ( Warhead ) are also quite good, with good stories and atmosphere. Unreal 2 is nice, too. As for Red Faction, Guerilla was quite good. Not so sure if you'd like the earlier titles.

Not a lot of good shooters that would fit the bill, lately. Lots of hybrids, yes ( STALKER, Borderlands and a few others ).

There are also the Call of Duty games ( i recommend to stop at the first Modern Warfare, the rest are mediocre at best in terms of story and atmosphere - personally, i've stopped after COD2 ).
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault ( the original game and expansions ) is available on GOG and is still a decent shooter. The rest of the mentioned titles, well, you will have to deal with DRM...:(

Rise of Triad 2013 is also decent and should fit your bill. There is also SiN, Blood 2 ( not great graphics, but still good stories and gameplay there ).
