Impaler26: How about Livalink ?
Just plain old shooting without any unecessary distractions. Probably not a game you can play for hours but it's fun in short bursts.
not popular among GOGers?
3 votes in wishlist... one is mine

Uff... Lots of recommendations. I'll look into them later today. Just a few comments on some of the mentioned games:

Red Faction - Played it years ago. One of the few games I prefer to play with cheats. God mode on, weapons cheat on, go!

NOLF - NOLF has singleplayer? All I know about NOLF is 4 player splitscreen and lots of monkeys with rocket launchers ;P

AvP - Played every AvP game. Story is very basic, but gameplay wise they're what I'm looking for.

Spec Ops: The Line - Already played it. The only military shooter I own. Loved the story, hated the gameplay :P

Doom 3 - Doom 3 has the same "problem" as almost every id shooter: absolutely no story. At some point you'll ask yourself where you are and why the f you're fighting all those demons. I thought RAGE could be an id shooter with a story, but...

RAGE - ...all I got was an id "light" shooter. Good mechanics and the typical "Why the f am I doing this" feel that every id shooter has, but it's missing the non stop action of other id games. Traveling those distances and the stupid search for sidequest takes to long. And when you finally arrive at some location, you got five minutes of shooting before you have to travel to the next spot.

I'll have a look at some of the other games later today. Hard Reset and Singularity look like fun games. Shadow Warrior and Rise of the Triad do look ... strange :/ Especially Shadow Warrior looks like Jade Empire on drugs. Undying and Painkiller could be worth a look. And... I totally forgot about FEAR! This game caught my interest when I was on a "little girl with long black hair is doing creepy things" trip (saw Ringu for the first time back then). But somehow I never played it.

Some great suggestions so far.

I just realized, unless I missed it, no one has mentioned Quake 4. The engine is virtually the same as Doom 3 so the look is all around the same but there are a lot of nice touches that (as fun as it is) Doom 3 doesn't have. Just an example, very VERY early on you are hunkered down with your squad and your commander tells you to go track down a medic and bring him back. It's not really a story but it's a kind of a mini-mission (among many) that D3 was void of. The cool thing about finding the medic is that he is on the other side of the field so you need to duck and run from wreckage, foxholes, and burned out buildings to get to him and get his ass back.

I would recommend Clive Barker's Undying. Recently purchased it from GOG but I played it many years ago. The experience was unlike anything I've ever played and I think it suits your requirements perfectly.

Also, thanks for the giveaway!

Duuuuuuude, I can't even.... You get a quad-barreled shotgun which can evaporate body of an enemy while leaving the limbs intact. You can slice enemies into small bits that will then fall on the ground. You can turn bunnies into vicious demon bunnies. Shadow Warrior is the shit - and has nothing in common with Jade Empire whatsoever.

I'd have to go with Lee Harvey Oswald. Killed a sitting president in a moving vehicle from the window of a building using a bolt action rifle loaded with a magic bullet.
Although for sheer number, it has to be Charles Whitman in the University Tower.

Screw you, Fast Eddie Felson was the man!

Besides, Oswald obviously had help. If he had missed JFK I'm sure one of the forty other gunmen surrounding the motorcade would have hit him.

don't ask why... :D

pigdog: Bulletstorm is just over-the-top gory fun. Some cheesy one liners but that's part of its charm.
Unfortunately it is no longer available. It was pulled from Steam and Origin this month. It looks like it will become unplayable when GFWL shuts down.

These have already been suggested many times in the thread, I just wanted to give them an extra vote.
No One Lives Forever 1&2 - They were never distributed digitally, you can only buy physical copies. NOLF2 is pretty cheap and not too hard to find. NOLF1 is much more expensive, but totally worth it in my opinion. I really think you would like these. There are demos floating around the internet somewhere that you could try.
F.E.A.R. - I don't think it is 10+ hours. I'm thinking about 8. Still, it is an outstanding action/horror FPS that I would recommend to any shooter fan.
F.E.A.R. 2 isn't bad, but... I always say this - F.E.A.R. 2 is a terrible sequel, and a bad horror game, but it is a great action game on its own. You will probably enjoy the game more if you pretend that it's not a sequel. I have nothing good to say about the third game.

Thanks a lot for all of your recommendations. I've watched a few short gameplay videos yesterday and I'll definitely put Shadow Warrior, Hard Reset and F.E.A.R. on my "get them on sale" list. For now I'll go with Jericho! The character switching (or "possessing" oO) looked a bit off-putting but doesn't seem to get too puzzle-ish, so I'll give it a try.

Congratulations monkeydelarge. Just let me know if you prefer System Shock 2 or Battle Realms + Winter of the Wolf

random.org told me that misteryo won the other game, whichever of the two it'll be ;)

Congratulations to you as well.

That's... pretty obvious ;) Still, it looks like Jade Empire on drugs on most of GOG's screenshots ;) I loved the art style of Jade Empire, so that's nothing bad.

cmdr_flashheart: Why?
Maybe the main reason is that I'm not a huge fan of 3rd person cover based shooters (the only one I enjoyed was Mass Effect)... Spec Ops felt very repetitive after a very short while. I get that it was an intended part of the game to help the narrative, but this doesn't make the gameplay any better.
