Seraphim: Have you tried Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns? A good game that won't strain your computer very much...

THANK YOU
That game is an undiscovered gem. It needs to be on GOG
Ancient Art of War. Too bad it's ancient itself!

Al1: World In Conflict maybe. It gets batsh** crazy on the last mission. Make sure you have a decent PC or it will fold like a pack of cards as mine did.

Weclock: well, again darwinia or multiwinia are great RTS games. Also, forget about WCIII, Warcraft II is the best in the series.
you sir, are retarded.
AoE II is the best, 3 is such shit it's not funny.
3 is soooooooooooooo boring.
I recommend aoe II, wololo

Got to back that up, AOE II rules.

JudasIscariot: Dawn of War 1. I think it only has a disk check ...also it is 40,000 years in the future....

Surely its only 37,991 years in the future :)

I was thinking in dog years! XD
My favorites are:
1. Total Annihilation (by a mile, favorite game ever)
2. AOE2
3. Warcraft 2

RTSs on a console never quite feel right with the control scheme. Plus they always have to water down the gameplay to work with the controller. If you want to play a great RTS go with a computer.
If you are a fan of fantasy rts games with wizards, etc then I have two recommendations you'll probably love.
The Myth series ( Myth, not Myst).
An epic fantasy style rts with a great epic feeling storyline and most of all, just plain fun gameplay.
It isn't like your normal RTS games. There's no building or harvesting or such, it's just purely focused on the combat, and the combat is great.
The gombat in the game actually takes tactics and skill. You only get the units you start a mission with and sometimes (if the mission's storyline has it) reinforcements so you have to use your men wisely.
The game makes ample use of terrain, higher ground allows your archers/ranged units to shoot further and ahve a longer line of sight. Some units (like the undead, only available in mp) can go underwater and hide to ambush players, etc. CErtain things like dry grass can be lit on fire with your archers[ or dwarves. Weather affects things like fire arrows and molativ cocktails effecieny, they will go out with rain/snow sometimes.

While the single player is great, the MP is also. Even though b.net shut down years ago the fans still keep it up and running via www.marius.net which, there's still a good active community on daily for you to hop in and play with.
The MP has a large variety of game types, from your usual deathmatch/CTF to more absurd things lilke capture the bacon and others and plenty in between.
The game has a large number of mods and conversions as well (back in it's prime it was like the Half life of RTS games).
If you only want to play one, I would recommend from the series Myth II: Soulblighter. Though really Myth I and II go well together (the 3rd one is ok, but it was not made by bungie).
Another game that would be right up your alley when it comes to "wizards" would be Sacrifice, which is available here on gog for only 5.99.
In this game you play, you guessed it, a Wizard.
This game is also focused on combat mainly. Also for its more unique twist you actually have an avatar, you aren't a hand in the sky rather you have to move about the battlefield to order your troops and use your own spells and things.
The great thing about this game is the storyline and choices. You can align yourself with different gods throughout the games storyline that affects how it plays out and what units/spells you obtain.
It has it's own quirky humor to it and art style.
I highly recommend both games.
I heard Perimeter was good. I got it as a gift but I haven't had a chance to try it yet as I am staying with a friend for a week. Boy do I have a HELL of a backlog of games now!
Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War (and all of it's expansions)
You shouldn't be disappointed.
Favorites that I am currently playing:
Company of Heroes (one of THE best RTSs)
Rome and Empire Total War (if you enjoy hybrid real time and turn based strategy)

Amen to that.
