This topic makes me sad. When I moved back to Spain from the US, I had to leave all my comics behind. :(
The Sandman is also my favorite comic ever. Aw, I had that gorgeus (and expensive) Absolute Edition. Oh well. I am surprised that it is so popular, given that it is quite literary. I don't think there is anything quite like it. It's so unique.
I also recommend Alan Moore (the author of Watchmen and V for Vendetta). When I was a teenager, I used to enjoy Christ Claremont's X-Men.
Frank MIller's Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is another classic.
And, of course, Asterix!
