I just wanted to chime in and state that I've really enjoyed Lords of Magic over the years. It's got quite a lot of variety - your hero units can be Mage, Thief or Warrior, which give training to lesser units, and there are 8 different faiths (4 elemental, 4 abstract faiths), each with significantly different selections of units. Plus each faith has it's own selection of spells, fantastic creatures and special abilities... and there are artifacts, Great Temples, inter-faith deplomacy and all sorts of other things to do. Resources are your standard gold, beer, and mana... plus one additional one called Reputation.
The balance between the faiths isn`t perfect. Whatever you do, don`t start with Chaos - you`re asking for trouble. All others are fairly playable, though the overall consensus seems to be that Life and Order are the strongest. As a die-hard mage, I love the Fire Mage endgame too much to give it up, even if its units aren`t the strongest.
I come back to this one every summer. It`s definitely one of those unique games that comes along once in a long while.
