cioran: I'd say Matrix is cyberpunk (by way of Japanese anime like Ghost in the Shell, etc which is quite cyberpunk). The problem is it's just not very good, at least after the first one (and excluding the really great Animatrix).

I don't think something can be considered Cyberpunk just by having virtual worlds you access with a datajack. Cyberpunk has a near-future vibe that The Matrix was missing.
Completely agree on the films though, especially Animatrix. Revolutions was a dog turd of a movie.

Agreed! I left the cinema after Reloaded and thought, I can guess what the twist is here, they didn't actually leave the matrix after all, they're just in a secondary matrix (where people who reject the first one get put)! Then I was horribly disappointed by their conclusion.
Anyway... back on topic... those Cyberpunk RPGs eh? not enough of them, isn't it? Yes.
My picks:
Deus Ex: I know it's been mentioned alot, but it really is probably the greatest cyberpunk game of all time. I like to pretend the sequel never happened, for multiple reasons. Play it with the Shifter mod for maximum fun.
Rise of the Dragon: Why this hasn't been mentioned yet is strange. It was probably the first cyberpunk game I ever played, and while it is rather short and has a poorly executed arcade sequence in it, it is a very good adventure game from Dynamix. If you can find it, try the Sega CD version, which features full voice acting, but at the cost of graphic quality.
Shadowrun (SNES/Genesis/Mega CD-Japanese only): Both the SNES and Genesis games I've played over and over again since they were first released. Shadowrun for the PC was fun for a few days, but it was nowhere near what the prior games were. I've never played the Japanese game for Mega CD, but as I understand, it is an adventure game rather than an action game.
Snatcher: Awesome PC Engine/Sega CD game. If you can get an actual CD copy of the game, hold onto it since its a bit rare. Very fun adventure game with some arcade light gun sequences. The story is probably the best that Kojima ever wrote.
Another cyberpunk game I always wanted to try was Restricted Area, but I've never heard anything good about it. Same with Neocron 1/2.
Megaman series on GBA?
Burn Cycle.

The PC version I had also came with the soundtrack which was actually fairly good.
Cyberpunk is one of my favorite genres right along steampunk. Would love to have some good games on that genre, but these days it is mostly forgotten. :(
Too bad Cyberpunk 2020 is out of print, it had that wonderful 80's style.

Rohan15: Thief: Deadly Shadows while technically NOT an RPG is an RPG since you play the role of the main antagonist/protagonist.

Pong while technically NOT an RPG is an RPG since you play the role of a board.
System mother fucking Shock 1 & 2 but especially two cause that shit is badass

Cyberpunk died out because lo and behold, the cyberfuture we were all waiting for came, but it's become anything but punk. Web 2.0 is all corporate, all sleek, and all mainstream.
Restricted Area is a diablo type it wasn't bad but it really could have done better if they patched it's multiplayer. ( I see someone mentioned this already sorry for reposting it)

OT: You might try the fanedit "The Matrix dezionized". Makes M2&3 so much better.
Ours is a really tough task, finding good cyberpunk RPGs.

captfitz: But I remember a game called Harbinger that got pretty good reviews. I think it was sort of cyberpunk.

Mobygames says: "Diablo in space" :)

Elwin: Try Neuromancer. It's old (DOS), difficult but good. Also: BloodNet, Paradise: Cracked (this one more of a strategy, though), AI Wars: The Awakening,

I'm inclined to give Neuromancer a shot soon, although from previous tries I thought it wasn't quite an RPG.
BloodNet: not RPG... and, well, vampires...?
Paradise Cracked: never played this one, might give it a shot!
AI Wars: never heard of this one... can't find much info on it either.

Epsilon: Dreamweb

Never played, but might not be an RPG either. From this Youtube video I saw, has no dialogs, but looks promising enough. Talk about weird design, with the main character showing up larger than anything on the screen. Anyone else knows this game?

Elwin: "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream" is excellent, ... and be sure to get the voiced version, for AM's monologues ... are the best part of the game.

True. Tough game. Still not cyberpunk, and certainly not an RPG.

Navagon: Have System Shock 1 & 2 gone unmentioned simply because they're too obvious?

I played System Shock some, but I didn't see any dialogs...to me that makes it a dungeon-crawler.
avatar
Navagon: ... SNES version of Shadowrun also ...

Yeah, I know that one. It's not nearly as good as the Genesis game... but it might be a decent cyberpunk fix for the weekend :) What lacked in the SNES version was both a great combat system and matrix-running -- both found on the Genesis game.

phanboy4: A Mind Forever Voyaging
Bioforge
I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream
Portal (the old, non-Valve one, maybe not really cyberpunk, but great)
Messiah
Obsidian (obscure but awesome Mystlike)
naturally System Shock and Syndicate
Bethesdas' Terminator FPS games
..and possibly Ubik, though I haven't played that one.

I appreciate the list, Syndicate is one of my most favorite cyberpunk games of all times (might be a great cyberpunk fix for this weekend), SS and IHNMAIMS are great games.... though none are RPGs. AMFV, while considered a great game is out of my league nowadays, I'm done with text games. And I think I never played Messiah simply because there's a baby angel on it. I mean, seriously...

phanboy4: EDIT: Also see here, tho you may have found it already: http://www.cyberpunkreview.com/cyberpunk-games/

Whoa, that site actually looks good, I'll have a closer look this weekend...

cioran: Omikron's an RPG. It's good, too.

I really wanted to try it out, it simply won't run here though. Probably something to do with my nVidia board or Directx 10, as it won't show graphics in-game (all audio, video cutscenes and title screen run ok).
avatar
trusteft: ... and Restricted Area.

Never heard of it before. I searched the net and it looks promising though. Heh, the main character looks amazingly like Neo from Matrix.
avatar
Andy_Panthro: I'd suggest the Phantasy Star RPG series (the fourth was my favourite...),

Truly great series. I only beat Phantasy Star 1.

System Shock 2 is possibly closer to an RPG than SS1. Neither has any chosen dialog, as the story is that you are alone.... but they both have good plots, great atmosphere, many logbooks and scary moments, and one of the best villains ever.
Deus Ex is essentially SS2.5... with the main addition being other characters.
---
It seems the only hope for cyberpunk fans is Japan. Lots of JRPGs and Anime seem to have major cyberpunk influences.... though they don't often have the gritty realism that the genre usually had in the west.
Ghost in the Shell is pretty cyberpunk... though again the game wasn't an RPG.

Elwin: OT: You might try the fanedit "The Matrix dezionized". Makes M2&3 so much better.

Never heard of that, but i might check it out. I always felt that you should be able to edit M2 and M3 together to make a decent action movie. Though the ONLY good thing in M3 was the final zion firefight... taking that out would make M3 totally pointless.
PS/ looking around for that i've now discovered a load of awesome fanedits i want to see. Loads of fixes to the annoying parts in movies. Superman 2: Deja Vu sounds awesome.
I hope there's one that cuts all the rubbish out of the new star wars films... *searches*

There is a fanmade edit of Star Wars IV which is in HD and is edited to show Han Solo shooting Greedo first like it was. Best I can help you with.

I've actually found TOO MANY edits that fix the prequels.... there are dozens of 'em!!
I always felt you could forget Ep1, and mix Ep2 and 3 into a reasonable movie. Or i always fancied trying to cut Ep1 and Ep2 together in a flashback style Godfather2 cut.
Terminator3: the coming storm sounds awesome too... i think i just found a new obsession: fan edits.
