In real football news, finally the Barclays Premier League has kicked off for the 10/11 season.
Tottenham look rock solid. City, thankfully, look shit. Chelsea, sorry, Drogba and his pals, continue to hammer the opposition at home. Liverpool and Arsenal about to open now.
In the end though, it'll be a kneejerk race between Chelsea and United as usual. Let's see the league go back to Old Trafford this season.
can't we just kill off united and chelsea and get a decent season again not one that relies on out buying the other teams?

United hasn't exactly outbought anyone the past few years. You can kill off City all you like though.
Listening to Liverpool vs. Arsenal now.
Big home game to start for L'pool, still hopeful they can win.
Fed up of being written off this season, with Torres and Gerrard on form we can make the Chumps League places.
Nice to see Fulham go to Bolton and get a point. Mark Hughes is off to a good start of course we have United next. Still if Hughes can really get in Craig Bellamy then miracles may happen.
Gotta wait a couple more weeks for the real football. ;)
You know what's ironic? The word soccer was originally coined by British royalty. Back in the day any game played not on horseback was called football. As the game became more popular with the 'lower classes' it began to be called football more than soccer. The US just kept the original name, British people changed it to football, so calling it the 'real' football is actually inaccurate.

Girls dressed in some protection crap is hardly called football. Keep your trolling away from this thread.
Anyway, now with Mourinho, we will kick Barca's ass. :p

Soccer was a slang term derived from the name "association football", association football as a term derived to differentiate football from "rugby football", so no, soccer wasn't the original name however both American football and "real" association football fall under the definition of football which is a team game played on foot with the attempt to score points by bring a ball to the opponents side of the field in some manner or another.

I wasn't trolling, I was stating what I remembered from history. I think people who get angry and caught up over what 'real' football is are dumb. Who cares if they're both called football?

There is that, although there has been some research that it might also derive from the word to 'sock' something even earlier than the 1800s, back when a sock referred to '‘light shoe’ more than a sock that it does today, which just essentially meant to kick something with a shoe. But no real proof, I just think its interesting where the word came from.

Well you're right that it's British in origin and that the US retained it. But that's about it.
Originally both rugby and football were known as football. To differentiate the two rugby football was so called and then football was association football. Association was abbreviated to soccer. Seeing as slang abbreviations are the preserve of us commoners, royalty had nothing to do with it.
