Has anyone here read Ready Player One? I just finished it recently and I feel like it was written for our kind of people (especially those of you old enough to remember 80s arcades). Without spoiling anything, the basic premise of the book is that in the year 2044 a wildly successful game designer has left an easter egg in his most popular game. The gamer that solves the mysteries and finds the egg will inherit the dying game designer's fortune. The contest is based around the designer's obsessions with 80s games, movies, and music, so the contestants must be deeply familiar with those things and lots of random geekery if they are to win.

The book is incredibly fun and bursting with pop culture references and gamer trivia. I think for those of us that love classic arcade games, it's an immense treat and I imagine most of you guys here at gog will enjoy it. I couldn't put it down.

Trailer for a book, wtf?
Read it, but it didn't click with me. I am not sure why that is, but there ya go.
I'm currently about two thirds of the way through it - I haven't had so much fun reading a book in years! The thing is, because of all the 80s culture crammed into it I would have thought it would fit into a film adaptation ridiculously easily if it wasn't for all the copyright issues. Poor Wade, I really hope it has a happy ending :'(
I have it on our e-reader, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Seeing as I have over 300 books purchased/obtained and waiting to be read, it may be a while...
I read that book about 3 months ago. It is a fantastic book. I loved all of the pop culture references. It made me want to go and watch all of the 80's movies again. I also had to play through Zork right after I finised the book.
Really odd that this thread should pop u now. I bought Ready Player One yesterday and started reading it last night. No other book's first chapter has pulled me into the story like this one has. I'm very much looking forward to finding out what happens next. :)
I LOVED it.

I'll admit, it's not for everyone, but if you were around in the 80s and were a nerd, you'll like it. I loved reading all the 80s movie, music, pop culture and video game references. Funny enough, even though it's a book, it got music stuck in my head for days.

There's supposed to be a movie based on it, but there's no way they can get all the licensing together!

I really enjoyed it.
The author even had an easter egg in it for a contest to win a delorean
Kept considering it, but now I think I'll add it to my library list.

Sounds like an update of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. :-)

I would compare it more to National Treasure. Only, you know, ...good.

Not necessarily. Nobody thought that Nintendo would ever release a license for a movie again, but Bowser is currently in theaters in Wreck It Ralph.
I read it, it's kind of fun. Certainly isn't an earth-shattering piece of sci-fi, but it's definitely good for those with a certain fondness for 80s era pop culture and (in particular) video games.

They are making a movie, which I don't intend on seeing. I'm sure that whatever the movie creators come up with will not match my mind's eye view of the OASIS.
