JohnnyDollar: Malus catus looks like he's ready for the cold weather. :P
I relocated to Russia for the remaining February. When I return, I will repent properly for failing 4 in February. Malus Catus will return on April.

P1na: I had it for my PS2, and I quite enjoyed it. It was more action oriented, but no coop crap and you still had to worry about ammo and resources somewhat (unlike 5, where you could just replay the first mission and farm Magnum ammo). I would buy a copy for PC... on GOG. Maybe on steam sale too, but that "added DRM" thing puts me off completely. We'll see.

PS: I do think RE4 is when the series went south story-wise. Before it, while convoluted, I could still see some "plan" of sorts guiding them. When I fired RE4 and I hear them say "BTW, umbrella collapsed a few years ago, no biggie" I got so annoyed I almost didn't even play the game.
That would be real nice if it came to GOG. I think GOG has a game or two published by Capcom. I wonder what's the chance is of GOG ever getting any of the RE games...

You think the story is still decent, though?

Story is decent at best. Honestly, I wouldn't play it for the story, in a way they seem to try to start a new storyline/era with 4 and it never worked out for me. Their struggles against umbrella were getting old, true (how many accident can that freaking company have? How did it survive that long with such a crappy quality control?) but they just didn't tie it well IMO, and the recent capcom games are just weak story wise in general.

As for capcom on GOG... they have a street fighter game at least, but that's coming from Capcom US. Capcom Japan is still not selling anything here, same as most (all?) other Japanese publishers.
RE4, one of the most cinematic games on the ps2....it was a blast to play, back in the day. Haven't tried the pc version yet.

I tried RE2/3 on my pc but the pre-rendered backgrounds end up looking like crap. Best played on an old tv set I suppose.

JohnnyDollar: It's gonna release on Steam pretty soon. What are your thoughts about it? I never played RE4. My understanding is the the PC version released several years ago was an awful port.

You think it will be well received by the critics and the gamers?
You planning on purchasing it?
Anything else you would like to add?
The original Gamecube version was brilliant -- I think there's no other game I completed as many times as RE4 -- but yes, the PC version kinda... stinks.

I'm curious what exactly they did to it. If it ever came to GOG, DRM-free that is, I'd probably consider buying it again.
The previous release of RE4 on pc had really really bad mouse/keyboard support (and the communite patches/fixes didn't make it much better).

If they can fix that, it will be a good game, as I personally loved RE4 on gamecube.

jamyskis: The fact that it is coming with added DRM and is only coming censored yet again in Germany just adds insult to injury.
Exactly. My old PC version may look like crap, but at least I can un-censor it to get the Mercenaries mode and Assignment: Ada unlocked. Which probably won't work with a Steam release.
I guess I'll be one of those people who won't be purchasing it. Never really cared for it. Its an okay game, but its not a Resident Evil game (to me at least). Its the game that started the series down the road of action over tension/suspense and puzzles. The last great Resident Evil game was Resident Evil Remake on the Gamecube. Now that's a great game. Also loved Code Veronica and 1-3. Favorite of the series is probably 2, despite the clunky controls.

Does it still have some puzzles, just not near as many?
I beat it 3 times for the PS2. I was disappointed initially because it was different than the old REs, but i ended up liking it alot. I enjoyed the inventory management in the game.

It has some, but its less of a focus. Not to the level of 5 or 6, though. RE 1, 2, 3, Code Veronica, Zero, Remake were puzzles first, atmosphere second, combat third. 4 was combat first, puzzles second, atmosphere third, and 5 & 6 were pretty much just combat.
I'd rather dust off my original PS2 copy to be honest. I loved Resident Evil 4. Especially the merchant and multiplayer game modes :)

I must have played through it at least three times before I put it down!

Though if it did somehow make it to GOG, I'd score it instantly to experience it updated. But I also would hope that the rest of the series could make it here. RE4 is nearly ten years old now. That would mean 5 and 6 could come to PC as well, maybe even 1 through 3.

Why would ANYONE main copy be the ps2? I know it was a tad better than the PC version but it was still a pretty shit port. The ps2 and original PC versions should just be binned. They did not do the game justice and there is absolutely no reason why anyone can't pick up one of the better versions these days.

The main consoles Gamecube, Wii, PS3, XBOX 360 all have excellent, affordable versions. The same version that is coming to Steam today.

That was the original version. I bought it when it was new. I have many fond memories too, so I wouldn't call it a "shit" port. In fact it wasn't a port as it was the original version. I didn't get a greatest hits or anything. I paid $50 retail for it within a month of release, and played it to death and still had it working fine.

I like to be grateful and get by with what I have, even if other versions are "superior".

I remember also buying it alongside Fatal Frame III. Too bad the Fatal Frames can't get the same improved editions as Resident Evil does (there was one remake, but it went to xbox).

Have you been keeping up with it leading up to now? I know you like the RE4 game, but does it look like they've done a good job with this new PC HD version to you?
