SimonG: I agree. And I want to add, it was only for a 6$ game! That's less than a Happy Meal!

What is it with all you people hawking over those free games. If you really want those games, without even paying such a small amount, stop bitching and pirate it already. Or better, invest the bitching time in something productive (or skip a meal) and buy the game!
And it will be $3 during the Xmas sale.
avatar
Navagon: That's the hope. There are a lot of good people here and the rest just stick around for the feeding frenzy. Once that dies down hopefully they'll move on.
Have a little faith, I'm fairly sure our community is far from being completely lost :)

My way around it was to make contests requiring at least a bit of effort. Was never a fan of swarming caused by simple giveaways ;)

GameRager: The offline thing was before the code giveaways, and I think some were experiencing the editing issues before as well(Basically you write a post, then edit it once, and when you go to edit again you end up editing the original post[edits are missing from the first edit].)
avatar
Vitek: So that's what happend to me recently. I thought I am going crazy and forgot to edit the post.
Yeah....example:

Original post: I love cakes

Edit so it says: I love chocolate cakes.

Go back to edit and add ".....and also strawberry." to the end of the last edit and it should now say "I love chocolate cakes.....and also strawberry.", but instead it says "I love cakes....and also strawberry."

Thank you. I was about to point out the same thing. If someone can't afford $3 for a game they really want, then things are indeed dire enough that they should spend that time trying to make money instead of posting on a forum about how they don't have $3.
I really don't like it when people complain about not winning a giveaway. If somebody is kind enough to give x amount of merchandise away then don't try to make them feel bad about not having any more to give. GOG wants to help people and provide them with classic games and doesn't have to give away anything at all. Hopefully, more people will see what great games GOG has to offer and purchase games from them. I plan on contacting GOG on Monday after the giveaway is over and thanking them for any/all the games that they gave me.

avatar
Navagon: The problem goes beyond that. The over-generosity of the community is causing this entitlement culture to form just as much, if not more, than GOG's own generosity.
avatar
Thiev: It happened before, the contest-makers got fed up with it and paused for a while. After some time things got (relatively) back to normal and contests returned. It's a pattern I guess.

A month after Xmas promo and maybe things calm down again.
If it was really this bad last year with people complaining then I can't really have a giveaway the way I planned it. Unfortunately, I'm no good at thinking up contests so I will probably just pick people at random to give games to.

GOG should adopt a lottery style giveaway where everyone on the site picks up a ticket and then have a drawing. It would take away some of the vulture mentality and give everyone a fair shot at the giveaway. Just a suggestion.

I don't have $3, but I do have £2, will that do?

Yeah, that works pretty well in my experience.

Use random.org and pick the user from a hat, so to speak. It is truly random and works wonders for simple contests.

You can always make a contest of posting a best idea for contest >.>

But how would you decide what the best idea was?

Telnet: But how would you decide what the best idea was?
You don't really have to, you can state you'll pick winners randomly from eligible posts. Even thinking up one sentence is too much for most of the 'code-grabbers'.

And that way CowboyBebop will have a nice supply of ideas for future contests to choose from ;)

Psyringe: Probably that's a sign that we're a pretty wealthy society on average.
avatar
wpegg: Interesting. What society are we? we're from all over the world. Maybe GOGers are the wealthy?
Well, we obviously have enough time and money to spend both on computer games, and the necessary hardware, and we have reliable access to power grids. Compared to the majority of people on the globe, as well as compared to people from our societies less than a century ago, that's pretty wealthy, yes. We may not all feel that way since we're probably mostly surrounded by even wealthier people, but that's part of the problem.

It showed on Steamgifts. Usual AAA games have thousands of participants and when someone on forums posted, in my opinion quite easy contest, there were only 14 entries and reward was 50 Euro game.

@ Gamerager; Someone should report it into "Bugs" thread. ;-)

You'd obviously pick THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST THE BEST....one. :)
