GameRager: ... Yes, I agree, this could get into a very circular discussion. Keeveek indicated that the OP was complaining about the F5'ers, not the entitlement culture.
Well, i see both complaining about entitlement culture and F5 facebook "stalkers" and I can't agree with jumping on the second group.

1) it was the only method to obtain these games, actually
2) for 90% of the world these six dollars is a lot of money
3) it's natural to behave like this when something is for free. It was ALWAYS like this, not only for the people born in the 90's.

wpegg: You know GR, that's the first time you've made me laugh. Thanks.

Telnet: Did I say that, I don't remember using the word 'circular'. I guess I should schedule myself for a reboot and a defrag...
Indeed quote screw up.

OP was talking about entitlement culture, which is a big issue developing on the forums, because of generosity.
avatar
Navagon: The problem goes beyond that. The over-generosity of the community is causing this entitlement culture to form just as much, if not more, than GOG's own generosity.
It happened before, the contest-makers got fed up with it and paused for a while. After some time things got (relatively) back to normal and contests returned. It's a pattern I guess.

A month after Xmas promo and maybe things calm down again.

People are quoting the wrong persons lately, many users appear offline even if they aren't, and also sometimes when editing a post it will revert to a prior edit(if you've edited a post more than once.) Dammit what's going on here? :\

My guess is that the aftermath of the code giveaways have left an impact on how well the servers operate. Either that or tribbles.

The offline thing was before the code giveaways, and I think some were experiencing the editing issues before as well(Basically you write a post, then edit it once, and when you go to edit again you end up editing the original post[edits are missing from the first edit].)

I don't think that the "vulture mentality" has been bred specifically on the GOG forums, as the OP suggests. If GOG would have never given out a free game before, we'd still see the same thing. It's a bigger problem. During the past couple of decades, people's sense of entitlement has increased (on average), while the ability to deal with with disappointment and frustration may have decreased. Probably that's a sign that we're a pretty wealthy society on average.
When I started out here, I was genuinely happy when I got a free game or two, and at least for me the generousity paid off, since I have over 200 GOGs! :D
(Can't resist dem sales... :) )

But there are some terrible leeches out there. People who just sign up, or make multiple accounts, and only creep out of the woodwork when competition time rolls around...

Those people make me sick! >:/

Interesting. What society are we? we're from all over the world. Maybe GOGers are the wealthy?

etna87: The "must-have-free-things" condition sadly seems to be even more prevalent on the internet. Kinda reminds me of the videos I recently saw of swarms of bargain-hunters in the US after thanksgiving. I had to laugh at the absurdity...
So did I. There was genuinely no excuse for the kinds of behaviour at those holiday sales, and I think the false economy of a lot of the products is indicative of the level of intelligence of some of the people causing the stampedes.

As an example, they were selling 4GB Xbox 360s at ridiculously low prices, yet these consoles are useless and need the overpriced hard drive expansion to be any real use. The Xbox 360s at the sale price plus the hard drive cost about the same as the hard-drive equipped Xbox.

Poverty is not an excuse for this kind of behaviour and mentality, especially as very few of the goods that had been heavily reduced were essential goods. If you don't have much money, then your money is better spent on other things like food, rent, energy.

There was an article in my local news a while back about how a father who had been neglecting his kids decided to spend his unemployment benefit on a PS3 and then - somewhat ironically noted - had his electricity supply cut because he hadn't paid his bills.

For my part, I can condemn the F5 stalkers (AFAIK, F5 on Facebook is useless anyway - Facebook feeds update automatically).

1) If you have a GOG account, then you will by definition have a means to pay for the games. What is the point of registering for a digital distribution purchase website if you can't purchase the games? Unless, of course, your sole aim is to get free stuff.

2) If six dollars is a lot of money to any given person, it gives rise to the question of how said person can afford to have a PC capable of running these games, or how they can afford to maintain a broadband connection needed to download them.

3) Doesn't mean that this kind of behaviour is acceptable. After all, we frown at the benefits scroungers in various countries who live off free money from the state and have extremely refined ways of avoiding any kind of productive work, and that's been going on for decades.

I can't speak for the people who want free stuff, but I prefer to know that I worked for my games.

So that's what happend to me recently. I thought I am going crazy and forgot to edit the post.

Telnet: When the 50% promotion starts, I'm sure that some of the negative aspects will be reduced.
Not if it causes a lot of people to start posting giveaways. It will be like black Friday in the US. Not pretty.

Then you better start building up a stockpile of mace to keep those other shoppers away!

That's the hope. There are a lot of good people here and the rest just stick around for the feeding frenzy. Once that dies down hopefully they'll move on.

I think that's part of the logic behind the most recent compo as well - instead of posting the codes, they're now doing a prize draw for 50 members.

You just know that people are going to be bandying around accusations of fixing, but I think a random draw is the best way to discourage F5 stalking and scavenging.

For my part, I'm looking forward to the 50% sale so I can wipe out the remainder of my wishlist :)
