frostcircus: IRONY: Whenever anybody complains that some opinion piece means a publication has "lost all credibility," said person loses a lot of credibility in my eyes.

Of course it's an opinion, I even go one better in the thread title warning that this is a rant.
Obviously though, I am correct, and IGN are wrong and sloppy.
And what is a pohguahgalugh?

michaelleung: I don't hate Oblivion and Fallout 3 (I love the Fallout games and the third one is no exception) but I did find Oblivion lacking Morrowind's charm and the fun of it. I think people are still bitching about Oblivion because they felt they were promised much, much more than what actually came out.

Personally, I probably like Fallout 3 even more than 2. Neither game was perfect, but Fallout 3 was more immersive and naturally had better combat. I wasn't so keen on the first one. Hell, I even like Tactics for what it is (as in, not an RPG but an XCOM style squad game). So I'm definitely something of an exception to the norm around here.
Although I did find Oblivion as bland as hell. It just felt like they stretched a small amount of content out as far as they could via copy/pasta. It would have been better if they dropped the pretence of it being an RPG and made a smaller action adventure out of it. A shame really, given the greatness of Morrowind.

The "cheers list" is so blatantly wrong I won't say anything else. The "tears list" is just five random bad rpgs. Good job IGN.
Its IGN, expecting them to do anything remotely intellectual would be like asking the commenters on kotaku to be remotely civil over a minor disagreement
Why even care what they think? If you like a game or don't like it, that's all that matters. Listen to your opinion of a game and ignore that of so-called "critics" and you'll stop getting stressed out =)
i don't like Gamespot's critics
yeah if you start to stress when random people on the internet disagree with you, not only will you go bald from stress at the sheer volume but your children might end up lacking the genes to even HAVE hair
Then they'll be assumed to be cancer patients their whole lives and while they might get some cool perks out of it it'd get annoying in the long run
Won't someone PLEASE think of the children??

stonebro: Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Mass Effect are all in the 5 cheers. None of those are even remotely worth cheering for. Mass Effect isn't even a proper RPG, it's a RPG/FPS hybrid. If you've got Mass Effect in there, then Diablo 2 should be up for contention too.

Why single out Mass Effect? Aren't all five of those games pretty solidly in hybrid territory?

Speaking of hybrids, I have to confess that I'm not really human, but I'm a Humanoid Cylon.
Eh, IGN skews RTS (vs. say GS which skews towards dumb, loud shooter games). Normally they're pretty good. It's not a bad list, being that it's only 5 games. It's a puff piece. Kind of tough to do much with a top 5. Take it fwiw. Have you ever written a list like this? I wrote a couple for GameFaqs. There's only so many spaces. You have to leave something out. Inevitably someone gets their panties in a bunch over it
The only thing that stands out on the list for me is Fable. Great game, but I think it's more of an adventure game than an RPG, though I suppose one might say most RPGs now are "hybrid games". Still, it's only about 8 hours long. Otherwise, despite the fact I don't agree with most of the choices or think it shows any knowledge of RPGs beyond the last 3-4 years, it's within reason.
I've seen worse lists. I'm glad to see Freedom Force is finally getting appreciated by critics (though it's odd to see the second one, which wasn't as good as the first). I suppose it helps most of the games on the list are coming out with sequels, DLC, or similar releases soon. It's a business. I don't blame them for that (ditto on previews - I know how that works, also puff pieces). Unlike GS, their reviews are good.
The bad side of the list is mostly true, if woefully incomplete (critics rarely play truly awful games in their entirety, so this doesn't shock me). Dungeon Lords was really atrocious. I've never heard of Pompolic. It could be quite bad.
Still, Mistmare is bar none the worst CRPG I've ever played, but it's very obscure, so I doubt they've played it. There are some really obscure German and Eastern European games that are much worse than Gothic 3, too e.g. Metal Heart. Also, I think the credited truly awful free-roaming RPG is probably Two Worlds, not G3. G3 was a disappointment but I don't think it qualifies for "teh worst game evar!!!!"

You're just mad because they won't port Hybrid Heaven to iPhone.
"Author has no gripes on RPG games obviously. Try playing some of the games instead of listing those that's popular by sales. Idiot. Where is Neverwinter nights 2 + addons, where is The Witcher? Mass Effect which is a mixed FPS/RPG game. IGN lost the little credibility they had left."
This comment pretty much sums it up. :)

Or, Youtube commentators.
IGN didn't just lose it; they lost it a long, long time ago. Most of the editors are aggravating, and they attempt humor but never really get close to it. Take a look at the unboxing video for Batman: Arkham Asylum Collector's Edition (but find a link for it because I lost it. Sorry.). The person talking wears those "bro" sunglasses indoors, and every quip that blunders through his oral cavity is just another nail in the coffin of society. I hate people like this with every slice of meat in my body. He should get a job working at some wildlife safari ride at some theme park, so he can make lame jokes to his heart's content.
