Sim Copter :-)
I had a lot of fun with the Sim Copter demo. For me it was a kind of a precursor to The Grand Theft Auto III games with large cities in 3D that seemed alive with people and cars moving around the place. And the demo was really big. it had three or four cities that you could play around in. Having Wagner's "Flight of the Valkyries" play while you were flying around in the helicopter added a lot too. This composition is still more about the joy of flight for me than warfare and extremism that it has also been associated with. I do however often use it when I'm playing Age of Wonders and I attack cities with my Valkyries. The Best of both worlds I guess.
A game where you rescue people, put out fires, aid the police and transport people shows that you can make fun computer games that does not involve killing people or senseless violence.
Of course, in such a game, one of the most fun things you that you can do is to kill people and engage in senseless violence.
"Accidentally" losing people I was transporting from my helicopter, then picking them up (this time in bandages) and then when in a suitable height "accidentally" loosing them again this time with fatal consequences, was great fun. Especially because of that Aaaaaaaaaaaa scream my passengers made when I dropped them.
Through my curiosity I found out that I could set cars ablaze by bumping in them with my plastic bucket and one activity I liked doing between rescuing people was to make huge motor vehicle "accidents" involving several vehicles. If the bucket failed me I could always just bump them with my copter to start a fire.
I think I did land on top of people for the kick of it a few times too.
Come to think of it I should probably change the title below my name.
The first time I played Grand Theft Auto III: Vice City I borrowed it from a friend for a few days and I did not play a single mission. All I did was trying out various mischief while listening to different kinds of music, equipped with a cheat code for unlimited weapon supplies.
One time I listened to the right-wing Ukrainian Black Metal band Nokturnal Mortum's album "The Taste of Victory" while I was playing. The idea of the album is some silly but still emotionally engaging concept where they are sad, angry and bitter because Nazi Germany lost the war. (Very strange for such a pro-slavic band to have such an opinion!!!)
While I was playing I imagined that I was part of some extreme right-wing Slavic group that decided to do terrorist acts in their home city. The first two songs "Weltanschauung" and "The New Era of Swords" are up-beat melodic Black Metal mixed with folk music. They were very fitting for when I indiscriminately targeted civilians (hey not all right wing extremists are racists you know!) and fought cops. The third song with the ironic name of "The Taste of Victory" is very bitter and too long so I think i skipped it. The fourth song "As the Steel Eagle Into the Golden Svarga" was very fitting for my tragic end. The song starts out slow with bitter shouted vocalizations in Ukranian. The music changes back and forth between dissonant, sad and hopeful\uplifting parts, then at the ten minute mark a single flute accompanied by just an acoustic guitar and drums gets the center stage . It keeps playing the same tune over and over for four minutes but it is a very beautiful tune. My interpretation of it is that it represents the hopes of a people manifested in warplanes.
It keeps repeating over and over again until it dies out. As this tune was playing I was fighting with anti terrorism police that tried to take me out from helicopters. I fought against them valiantly and I don't know how many of their helicopters I shot down, but in the end I faded out like the song did.
I don't know why a Slavic terrorist group would want to let hell loose in Miami, but it was great fun :-)
Self righteous tragic types are fun to play. Later on when I was listening to Björk i had entered in a cheat code that turned my avatar into a woman and another cheat code that made women follow me. I imagined that my character and the woman that she had just picked up were some lesbian Bonnie and Clyde couple that had killed some people and was chased by the police.
We rode a motorbike together, successfully and unsuccessfully getting past roadblocks littered with nails and spikes. I had some excellent background music with the songs Jóga and Bachelorette with some fitting lyrics like:
"state of emergency, is where I want to be, state of emergency, how beautiful to be", "I'm a fountain of light in the shape of a girl" and "all the accidents that happen, follow the dot, coinsidense makes sense, only with you, you don't have to speak, I feel".
I really recommend playing Grand Theft Auto III: Vice City or a similar game while listening to the first three Björk albums. You will find a lot of new and unexpected meanings to the songs! "Hunter", "Violently Happy", and "Army of Me" are obvious candidates but also songs like "It's oh so Quiet", "Alarm Call" and "Pluto" are great for some inspired killing spree.
Roller Coaster Tycoon as someone mentioned is one of these games that fits this tread like a glove. I remember a relative of me when he was quite young did build a nice amusement park above the ground, but below it there was a horrible dungeon where he kept some of the guests trapped.
The first Grand Theft Auto and Postal 2 do definitely fit here too, but being evil and depraved is pretty much how you are expected to play the games.
When watching movies where I take the characters seriously and think of them as individual people I often get emotional reactions when they are subjected to violence. But I can't remember feeling bad about doing something violent against people in a computer game. Perhaps it is because both the violence in itself looks very unrealistic and more importantly that I do not think of the people as people in the way that I do in some movies.
I would find it disturbing to kill children in a computer game though, even though they are just sprites or polygons. I've always spared the children in the Fallout games even though it was somewhat out of character sometimes. Hmm, but when I think of it, Roller Coaster Tycoon will probably be an exception.
I think we have found the most evil game on GOG:
Roller Coaster Tycoon - Making child killing fun for the whole family!
It makes me think of that awful Dead Kennedy's song.
