I'm currently playing through Rage at the moment. I got the Anarchy Edition on a retail disc version as it can still be found, and then I got the Scorchers DLC on Steam. Think I spent about £10 or £11 in total.

My opinion is that I'm loving it. I didn't go into it expecting too much, what with the known issues with graphics popping and a linear and short story. However, I'm doing as much as I can, all sidequests, sewers, races, as much as I can. I'm near the end now (think there are only 2 story missions left, but I still have two sewers to find and some sidequests).

As a basic FPS shooter it does what it needs to. And it got me to read the 3 issue graphic novel (giving an introduction for the game) and now I've also started reading the Rage novel (which has some differences in plot to the game).

I actually bought RAGE: Anarchy Edition retail not too long ago for like $10. Aside from the pop-in, I'm having a blast. Character animations are stellar, I LOVE that enemies react to where you shoot them (I once shot out both the legs on a bandit, so he ended up shuffling on his butt to try & shoot me with his pistol). The guns I have (Assault Rifle, Double-barrelled and Combat Shotgun & the pistol) feel great, especially when you have special ammo. I feel that the driving is a bit too much, how it's forced on you in order to progress.
What can anyone tell me about The Scorchers DLC? It came outta nowhere.

Pretty much my theory on games like that, drunk and/or high, possibly with friends, and not very high expectations.

I mean, you get a crossbow with exploding bolts, it can't be all bad.

New DLC lets you play after the ending, though I don't think it changes the ending.

I play it on the rare blood moon.

I didn't play Rage but it definitely seemed to be railed and maybe a bit simplified.

Simplified as opposed to what!? :D Every weapon has multiple kinds of ammunition, you can collect junk to improve your weaponry (or some of it, at least. Or just a pistol? I'm not sure. But I do think you can just upgrade everything) and then there are the racing bits with customisable cars. Which shooters from ID were more complex? :D

It's an Id game. Doom 3's monster closets felt old for its time, quake 4 was repetitive (seriously, it was just the exact same mission like four times) and RAGE suffers a little from both of these (though not as much as each one individually).

However when I consider some of the recent alternatives, feeling a little boring and aged aren't so bad. At least they're all polished and don't make me wonder what the hell they we're doing with all their millions and years of dev time.

I guess I meant that from what I read in different reviews, the game was "railed" and didn't offer as much freedom. I could be wrong, though, since I haven't played it.

It's an Id game so Id suckup newbies will love it because they suck up to the company. They do not care about the games, only the company. A bit like Blizzard suck up newbies and Vavle suck up newbies.

Anyway, it's a typical Id game: dreary, boring, no innovation, stupid sounds, stupid guns, no AI, tedious and pointless. Almost any other FPS game is better than the dross this little company puts out.

I'd like to echo some of Fenixp's thoughts - the atmosphere is top notch, the art direction even more so, the gunplay leaves nothing to be desired - on top of that, the weapons have a neat feel to them (the shotgun in particular, such an improvement over its pathetic Doom 3 equivalent). What made me VERY happy was their immense accuracy, even when fired from the hip.

With that said, what I flat out hated about Rage was its linearity - abysmal, corridor-like level design with omnipresent invisible walls and waist-heigh railings you can't jump over is not what I expected "from the creators of Doom and Quake".
