Heh, I still happen to have Chaos Legion for the PS2. Since someone brought it up I might give that another go.

Only game I can think of in recent memory (this year and last) is Metal Gear Rising. Sure, it got praised in some form, but there were plenty of people that just hated this game (and the fact it existed) mainly on the grounds that it wasn't a traditional Metal Gear Solid game (and...well, despite it being a spinoff it's cannon with the rest of the series). I just loved it, I thought most of the stuff the game had worked. It had issues with it's camera, the lock-on wasn't exactly useful when dealing with more than one enemy, and there was the whole "controversy" with its length (2-5 hours long for one playthrough, plus more after that to unlock everything), but honestly everything else about the game made me love it to death. It's been a long time since a game actually did give me great satisfaction when finishing it, which more than I can say for other titles (like the Tomb Raider Reboot, DmC: Devil May Cry by Ninja Theory, Cry of Fear, and others). Although I'm still curious what this game would've been like if Kojima didn't choose Platinum as the developer, but we'll probably never know.

Another game that comes to mind: Enter the Matrix. Don't really know anybody that liked this game, but it was years ago when I first played it. I thought it was a decent brawler with passable gunplay, but it had a bunch of unlockables (2 player mode, extra characters, and a lot of other stuff).

Coelocanth: Buggy as hell without the mod, basically.
I'll have to get back to you on other games. Need to do a few things first.
Ok thanks, but again about ToEE, does the mod fix the "horrible dialogue and quests and a frustrating difficulty" ?

I liked Temple of elemental Evil when I played it (looong time ago). Can't remember if it was patched or not, but a pleasant experience in general.
Pool of Radiance : Ruins of Myth Drannor on the other hand... finished it a looong time ago too but all I can remember from it was
1- lovely scenery at first glance
2- endless repetitive meaningless corridors
Maybe my memory is failing but I can't remember smth meaningfull from that game. Could give it another try should it appears on GOG, but on the other hand patience for bad designed dungeons lately in on decline too.

My guilty pleasure is Fallout: Tactics.
I loved it! Yeah, the story isn't strong, it's quite unfinished, bugs everywhere etc...
Don't know why I just like it, last summer reached vault 0 in hardcore and enjoyed it alot.
It could be much more with maybe more missions, more fixes, and hell why not more balanced random loot random encounters etc.

No, it doesn't change what was already there as far as quests and dialog goes (other than fixing bugs). The difficulty is one of the appeals, IMO. But the game is turn-based and has adapted the 3.5 Edition D&D rules extremely well, so the difficulty is well placed, IMO.

Quests are pretty much rudimentary, although there are a few that aren't that bad at all, and the dialog is fairly basic. This is not an in-depth RPG, but a rather faithful adaptation of an old PnP TSR module. There's a lot of combat and it's very well done. If you're looking for somewhat story-light but with good tactical combat and like the 3.5 Ed D&D rules, this one is excellent.
In terms of rushed games, KotoR 2 deserves a mention. With the restoration patch filling in all the missing stuff and fixing the ending then it is a good, even great, game. Despite its shortcomings on launch though, I did like it, even though it was nearly unplayable at the end.

I'm not sure it should necessarily be considered a hated game, but there was definitely deserved negative reviews!

Another one that I did quite enjoy was Hydrophobia Prophecy
The story was bizzare, the controls somewhat unwieldy, especially in the final boss fight, but it was a very ambitious game, and I would like to see a re-release or a sequel with the kinks knocked out.

anomaly: I'd like to know what games you liked that were widely panned, and what were the parts you liked. This is intended to be a positive thread, so respect for whoever likes something that was disliked.
Lands of Lore 2 and 3. Especially the third one seemed to get lots of hate, at least from gamers (not sure about mags).

I just generally found both pretty playable action-RPGs, and LOL3 had the "burning haunted house" section that I recall finding very exciting.

Halo PC: I think this is mainly panned by PC FPS purists, but I found it enjoyable, and the racing part at the very end is quite exciting. I like to replay it (the racing part at the end) every now and then, the last time a few days ago.

Halo 2 PC: I swear I am the only person in the world who likes this game, specifically the PC version. Sure it didn't have the same customization options and support for lots of different resolutions like many other PC FPS games, but hey, I still think it is superior to the original XBox version (which I also have, but stopped playing in disgust due to the awkward gamepad controls and the fuzzy graphics on a television, making it harder to discern enemies from the scenery). It was an ok FPS game that I didn't mind playing till the end.

Sufyan: Kane & Lynch 1 and 2. Yes, I am fully aware that these games are objectively terrible. The first game was pushed out the door with no polish, and the second game has nothing going for it other than it's unique art direction. The shooting is downright terrible in the first game and passable in the second. The characters are awful people, all of them, and they accomplish nothing but death and destruction. Well, that's actually why I like these games. They are character studies of utterly flawed men dragging everyone down with them. It is fun to be that guy sometimes after having saved the world (or just 'MURICA!) over and over again. It is not often you get to play the small time scumbag the hero in another game would kill in the first mission without a mention again.

I know these games are terrible or at best incredibly average in parts. Still, I'm drawn to them and suffer through them willingly.
I only played the first game but I liked it for what it was, don't understand the critisism either.
That you play as a scumbag, the GTA series are build around this, so why it suddenly was an issue was beyond me as well.
I liked the Kane and Lynch games as well, mostly because they felt like crazy Michael Mann movies.

I liked Deus Ex: Invisible War and Thief: Deadly Shadows despite their deficiencies compared to their predecessors. They retained enough of the formula to be entertaining.

A lot of PC gamers hate Halo but I loved the original game. The sequels all suck though.

FEAR 3 is a pale shadow of the original but I found it enjoyable because of its unique second character and some well done manic combat. Same thing for Red Faction Armageddon.

Risen 2 is a disappointment because of small, linear islands making up the second half of the game, but I still liked it on the whole.

How does Risen 2 compare to the first game? I only made it a little ways in, and then stopped and haven't found the urge to go back in. I'd be happy to jump to the sequel if it was better though.
Jurassic Park from TellTale. It is their first step leading to The Walking Dead success, just QTE with a plot and hectic action but I really, really liked it. as an interactive entry in the franchise.

Episode 3 is my favorite of the 4, like Episode 2 was my fav in The Walking Dead, seems (and surely are) written by (a) completely different author(s) from the rest and stand out as great! (Alan) Granted, I am a fan of the whole dinosaurs thing anyway.

Another vote for Alpha Protocol for me. Got the game for $3 and from what I played so far it seems well worth that.

For an MMO, I thought Star Wars The Old Republic was a fine game and still log in to my free account every so often to get my MMO fix.
I liked Paper Mario Sticker Star.

I found it fun, and the whole temperary powers idea unique. Sure, it may not seem like a traditional rpg, but it shows that nintendo is willing to try something new.
alpha protocol got a lot of bad reviews, but i actually liked it a lot.

It's worse than the original, not better. Well I guess that depends on priorities actually, I dunno. The colonial era setting is nice and the musket combat is cool. The first couple islands are large and interesting. It mainly just falls apart in the second half because the environments go to shit.

jamotide: I have the perfect example for that. Biing! 2. It got horrible reviews, like 18% or so, was ridiculed by everyone for its nudie pics, but it's a really good and complex business sim that fans are still working on to improve and fix. I loved it back then and still play it alot today.
It's even more bizarre since Biing 1 got really good reviews and is liked very much, even though it is exactly the same game with nudie pics, just in a hospital instead of a beach club, and less polished.
For me the problem with Biing! 2 wasn't the quality, but the fact that it was unplayable. I bought a cheap retail version about a year (or maybe two) after release that only came with the handbook on CD. Unfortunately it didn't include the answers to the copy protection. The result of answering the question wrong was bankruptcy after a certain time span.

But yes, it really got some strange reviews back then: I mean how can stuff like "Reminds me of Biing!" and "Extremely longsome." be negative? It's a goddamn sequel (how could it not remind you of the first one) and a management game (which are always longsome).

Would really like to see Biing! here at GOG. Loved the first one and despite the nudity and the very strange humour, it was a very good management game.
