So after getting hyped up over Diablo 3, never bought it but instead got Torchlight 1 when it was free here, I got addicted to Torchlight. It was my first Diablo-esk game and enjoyed it. I've tried Torchlight 2 a bit at a friends and it was pretty good.

But one thing I've been hearing both in reviews for Diablo 3 and Torchlight 2 is that it gets away from the "potion spamming" of Diablo 2. That doesn't sound fun...

I've been looking at buying it from Battle.net but that one thing has stopped me as I was going to buy it last night but got thinking about it first as to what this "potion spamming" implies.

So my question to you is, "Is Diablo 2 fun after playing game such as the Torchlights?" I'd love to try it but again, though it's only 10 bucks I don't want to waste the money you know?

So in your honest opinions, is the potion spamming and other systems fun or do they really hold the game back?
While I've lost almost all interest in the hack'n'slash / aRPG genre, but how can you enjoy potion spamming?

Then again I still have a sweet spot for Diablo 2 as a game so whenever I go back to it I don't mind its short comings because I've played it so much I'm used to its mechanics.

If potion spamming is your thing I suggest you take a look at Inquisitor. You can even use an auto-drink option. :P
Diablo 2 is the greatest hack'n slash game ever made. I played it for years, literally every day, up to 16-18 hours a day. You might say I was something of an addict :P

Buy it. Buy the expansion too, and play. Don't even think about it, just do it !

Hmm... I'll think about it lol, I trust you I do but sadly I'm one of those people who do "research" and think long and hard if it's worth the money... I mean i"ll probably pick it up once some extra cash comes my way (seeming how it's a 20 dollar investment haha)

Side note, I've heard it's got multiplayer, true or not true? if true, is it only LAN (as would be the custom of the day?) and does anyone still play Diablo 2?

You can play on Battle.net, and yes there are still people playing it. I'm pretty sure it actually increased after Diablo 3 was launched.

Ok, Well now I'm way more interested haha.
There was a game of GOG forum members starting up a few days ago. I would have loved to join but I never know when I'm going to be able to play.
I would recommend Torchlight 2 or Diablo III.

Diablo II is fantastic, but it probably has the weakest standard gameplay (from Diablo 2, 3, TL1, TL2). Diablo II has the best endgame from all of these titles, but it will take you a very, very long time to get there, especially if you are (a) new(b). No potion spamming in Diablo III, by the way.

Sadly the 60$ entry fee is an issue...

And I hate to be "that" guy but the DRM and the fact that drop rates are lowered due to the real money auction house and in game auction house... well they don't tickle my fancy.

But it's mostly the 60$ entry fee... and my computer can't run it...

If you are put off by low drop rates, do not play Diablo II.

Well that's not the whole reason, it's not low drop rates...

My issue is that you are basiaclly being forced to use either auction house, whether it be the gold or the real money. I mean, I'm not being forced but in my mind I think of it as... yeah that rare weapon that had... let's say a 1 in 100 chance to drop... yeah that's now a 1 in 10,000 chance to drop because otherwise the market would be flooded with said item and thus make the auction house pointless... so they adjust the drop rate to force you to use the houses, that's really about it, being forced to use the AH.
.
Buy Diablo 2 + Lord of Destruction then when Torchlight II is reduced in price you purchase that too or wait until it (if) arrives here, by the time you're tired of Diablo 2. :)

NOTE: Regarding online in Diablo 2, you can play closed (characters on blizzards servers) and open battle.net. If you enjoy single player I suggest you pick open whenever you want to play multiplayer because closed requires being online.

Not really. You can survive without auction house, utilizing it just makes it easier and it's actually kind of fun when you learn how to use it. Just so you know too, they are bringing the Auction House down 18th March, 2014, and while I don't expect them to lower the price before that you could always wait until that at least if you're even remotely interested in the game Auction House aside.

See it like this, if you want an extra challenge from the start force yourself not to use it. Besides, 1 of 10,000 is nothing compared to Diablo 2. Finding the best runes there is like a 0.000001% or similar. Of course items like that is not even needed to defeat the game, even on Hell difficulty.

I am not going to start beating that particular dead horse again, but again, avoid Diablo II. You can forget about endgame if you are not interested in trading (unfortunately, there's no AH in D2).

Ya, the AH wasn't a big concern of mine, just the fact that it's there cuases slight discomfort... the real issue I have is A money and B neither of my laptops can run it lol
Diablo 2 Demo

I found an old demo you could try and see how it works.
