MobiusArcher: Yea, the DRM is meaningless unless your a pirate. With consoles, when you put in a game, It works. You never even need to be connected to the internet. You can move the game to another console with no problems. You can let your friend borrow a game without having to crack it.

Edit:

I get it, your a pirate.
Try getting the right to use your games back after having your console serviced.

Try putting your games on a disk that you didn't pay Microsoft's inflated price for.

Pirate, bullshit.
DO NOT get a used 360 unless it's a slim one as it probably only a matter of time before it dies. I would recommend that you buy a new one, though you might want to wait until fall if you are mainly getting it for Skyrim, as it is likely there will be a price drop on 360s later this year.

CaptainGyro: I agree with everything, but I'm confused on how the drm is even worse than on pc

cjrgreen: The new firmware has new technical means of detecting forged discs and new APIs for doing things like rescanning the disc while the game is playing.
so what kind of problems does that cause?

I'll really enjoy it when my games slow down so they can recheck the DVD while I'm playing. That's the slowest thing you can possibly do. Not even PC games with online checks do anything that intrusive.
If you can, try to find a ps3 if you want to buy off of ebay. I got a used Xbox off of ebay (bad mistake) it red ringed within a few months

So... you don't want to pay for the game, but you don't think you're a pirate.

I'm seeing a fundamental conflict there.
Oh Ok.
I though you meant "while playing" to mean that you could still play the game normally while it rescans. That sounds pretty shitty

I don't have a 360 anymore, so I haven't played anything on it in more than a year. Not sure what it's like to play on one these days.

Like taleroth I find that " Try putting your games on a disk that you didn't pay Microsoft's inflated price for." to be pretty baffling though

Its not true. Either he is making that up or getting it from someone else who made it up.

Edit:
He may be thinking of how the game loads data off the disk instead of a hard drive. That is slower, though games are usually set up in a way that its not an issue. alternately you can just install the game to the hard drive. You still need the disk in the drive, but load times are improved.

I think teleroth means that he/she cannot create back up discs of the game that can be played on the console. Like, if the original disc gets destroyed for whatever reason then one cannot use a back up disc.
If you want a 360 ill sell u mine... you can cover shipping though as it will cost more than the console...

I don't make things up. The new firmware includes multiple new APIs for DRM. These specifically include APIs for doing a disc check within a running game.

I don't know any specifics, but I don't doubt your correct. I was referring to what you said about those checks slowing things down. That isn't true.
I don't know if this has been said yet, but I'll say it again in case it has.

Buying a used 360 is incredibly risky, especially if you find one that is an amazing deal. The reason isn't because of red ring, it's because of a potential console modification. Basically, when Microsoft bans someone from Live for hacking or modding, they don't just ban the profile, they ban the console itself from ever connecting to the Live servers ever again.

While you have a system that will play the games on disc, I don't think you can access DLC since its all stored on live, just like all the MP, demos, updates, etc.
The only remotely safe way to buy a used 360 is to get it from a shop that does trade ins, that way you can at least take it back and hit them with it if it turns out they sold you a banned unit (and they should bloody well know the difference). You might still be able to pick up a good deal on the older white pro model that would be worth it

I interppeted it as not being able to use decently priced hard drives instead of having to buy microsoft-certified much-too-expensive retardism (inside that custom plastic case is a normal sata drive, but there's a pretty solid check to make it impossible to connect any drive).
