So it'll format the drive to whatever format it needs out of the box(The SATA drive I mean.)? Good. Thumb drives need to be FAT or FAT32 to be read or written to by PS3 though?

Yeah the PS3 firmware has a format utility, but you must format the external drives yourself. It won't even detect them unless they are FAT32.

looks like all the bases were covered here, all i can say when backing up make sure you got something to do, when i did the back up it took well over an hour
