I Still play my PS2 and I suggest,
Metal gear solid 2 and 3
Sly cooper 1 2 and 3
Jak and Daxter games, Including Jak X combat racing
Resident evil games,
Silent HIll

fighting games
Soul Calibur
DOA 2

And many more that I can not remember at this time. WIll update as I go :)
After looking through my collection of my of PS2 games I think I found some that left me with some pretty fond memories.

- For me Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 are amazing, but I would say that if you have a PS3 or Xbox360 just get the HD collection.
- The Kingdom Hearts games are amazingly good RPGs, the story gets a little bonkers but it is still pretty good.
- Dark Cloud 1 and 2 are good games, but 2 is really the only one I would recommend since it is just better. I think my favorite thing about the second one is its interesting fishing system in which you can catch and bread fish to make yours the best.
- Dragon Quest VIII, it started slow for me but I ended up really getting into it. I mean it is dragon quest its great.
- Devil May Cry 3 is amazing, but I cannot recommend or say no to the others for the PS2 because I have not played them.
- Ratchet and Clank are really good action adventure games, I think out of the series the 2nd one was my favorite.
- Silent Hill 2 is probably the best survival horror game for the PS2, or at least it was for me. Clock Tower 3 and Fatal Frame 2 are close seconds.
Had a look through my PS2 collection as well (inspired by this thread), and found some titles I'd forgotten about. Awesome, cheesy and very manly B games such as Global Defence Force, The Red Star, Viewtiful Joe and the brutally punishing God Hand.

But the one I popped back into the PS2 was Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. Yeah, I know the HD collection is out, but I was really surprised how good this one still looks in SD. And I realized just how much I love playing it, despite the weird MGS controls. Crawling around knifing snakes, helpless little frogs and goats to have something to eat. And the elaborate ways you patch up yourself when wounded. This game makes me feel like Rambo in the jungle.

Well my sister took myself and my nephew to Gamestop last night and I got the PS2 and a bunch of games! So I thought I'd come back and share how I made out. I found many of the suggested games there along with some others I wanted which was very cool. I have tons of console gaming to play now. For $213. I got all of this:

Playstation 2 and a memory card for it

Call of Duty 3
Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance
ATV Offroad Fury 4
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2
Burnout 3 Takedown
God of War
God of War 2
Just Cause
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy X-2
Shadow of the Colossus
Resident Evil 4
Silent Hill 2
Fatal Frame 2 Crimson Butterfly
Manhunt
Manhunt 2
Bully
SSX 3

That ought to keep me busy for a good while. I am going to setup the system today and start having some fun. This is going to be a great weekend!

dirtyharry50: *snip*
Looks like you made out quite well, hope you have time to play through all of them :P

I've started playing Silent Hill 2 again myself thanks to the HD Collection on PS3, still loving it :D
GTA: Liberty City Stories
GTA: Vice City Stories

Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence (probably better to go for the PS3 HD remake)

Gran Turismo 4
Tourist Trophy
Now I'm thinking whether I should finally get God of War 1-2 for my PS2. They always seemed to get high praise everywhere, but I was always unsure if I really care about the gameplay (which I presume is mostly some kind of slash'em'up with combos, and even QTEs? Not my cup of tea really.), and frankly the whole setting always seemed a bit... juvenile. Not in a humorous way like e.g. Serious Sam games, but gore and splatter + some sex scenes, as if the games were craving for media attention?

But now they are selling them new (shrinkwrapped) for 9€ a piece, which is not a bad price I guess. Maybe I'll take a plunge and order them both. When I earlier considered them half a year ago or so, some store wanted 19,90€ for each (Platinum versions), which seemed a bit high for me, so I passed.

Wouldn't recommend these games to you since they are pretty much what you're describing here.

At the time they were released, they seemed like a considerable leap forward for 3D action games because the combat was so fluid and cinematic (incorporating QTE's, yes). They are mostly games that you play for the brutal combat and the pure spectacle and scale of the events and surroundings you encounter. But I think that it'll be hard to appreciate what the game has to offer if you can't bring yourself to play as a main character who is basically there to appeal to teenage boys: He shouts a lot and is very angry all the time - and yes, the way he indulges in violence and sex is not done in a humorous way at all, unless you laugh at him, not with him, for being such a titanic prick.
Burnout 3 Takedown is the best Burnout. I love that game. Bully is fun too. Man, now I want to bust out my PS2 and collection.

At some point try to find the Jak and Daxter games. The first one is one of my favorite platformers.

Avoiding all the obvious stuff, Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil is one of the most criminally under-rated games on the system. A bit on the easy side, but if you ask me, it perfected the 2.5D platformer.

Other worthwhile games include:
Dark Chronicle
Rogue Galaxy
Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
Maximo: Ghosts to Glory
Ape Escape 3

The QTEs are not that damn bad in the GoW games, at least, not in the first one. Never played the second one on the PS2. I played the first GoW game and it was very fun, imho. If you like to beat the crap out of everything that moves then it's the game for you. The QTEs happen mostly during the boss fights and they are not difficult to master.
