More awareness building for unique indie games.

Proteus is an exploration game which have to be tried - the immersion it creates with it's sounscapes and graphical style can not be described.

There is a PCGamer link to an article about it here:

and a link to the official website here:

Oh yeah, I forgot about this, seemed pretty cool. Wish there was a demo of some sort though.

You can get an early build on this page.
Not sure how much has changed since that build.
Version 1.0 was released today! Everyone who's bought it now gets a Steam key!

Go get it! It's still great (even more so now)!

Looks very interesting. Anyone tried the Steam release yet? Is it decent?

Debating giving my key away, actually. I am enjoying the DRM-free Humble Store version and Ed Key has confirmed ( https://twitter.com/edclef/status/296696613982855168 ) that he isn't ditching the DRM-free version just because it's on Steam.

Occasionally indie games end up being DRM free on Steam (i.e. you can run the game from the executable without the game trying to start Steam or giving an error). I wonder if that's the case with this one. If it's completely DRM free on Steam also I'd be willing to trade you something for your key if you'd be interested.
Is it true that this game can be 'beaten' in less than an hour? Similar to a game like Audiosurf or The Polynomial (other games related to music), can it just be replayed whenever or is it not something you'd replay? Edit: That wasn't very clear; What I mean is, is it the kind of game you can just jump in and play whenever like those other two, or will you need a break from it after the first playthrough?

This looks really neat. My first thought, just jokingly, was where are the bad guys? Who do I shoot around here? lol

Really though, watching the videos on Steam makes me want to try it but I am wondering what the heck do you do besides wander around taking it all in? Is there some point to it, some goal to pursue, some puzzle to unravel or something? If it is possible to do a playthrough which I guess means there is some ending to this, I am very curious about what else the gameplay involves.

I am actually still really excited to play it at some point, but I'm not willing to buy it at it's current price based on what I've recently read about it. From what I understand, it's a really sweet work of art, but the experience lasts less than an hour, and it's not something you'll necessarily revisit right away. One person equated it to seeing a piece of art that you like in a museum: It might be really cool, but it's not necessarily something you feel like you need hanging on your living room wall. Also, 10 dollars is a lot of money for such a small amount of content. Blame sales if you wish, but the fact remains that for 10 dollars you can get many, many more hours of content from a game.

I look forward to checking this experience out at some point, but for the time being, I can't justify spending 10 dollars for a 'game' that lasts less than hour, when you can get anywhere from 1 to 3 great games for that same price that could be dozens or even a hundred hours of gameplay.

Oh, and as far as what you actually do in the game: You walk around and explore, and that's it. There is zero interaction with the world, it's more of the world reacting to you, according to the (positive, I might add) reviews. Sounds like it could be neat, but doesn't sound like 10 dollars neat =(

Okay, yeah. I agree this should be a $2.99 game I'd probably wait and pick up on sale for $1.49 kind of like I did with the game Home.

Meh. Games like this are starting to piss me off (also that's not a game that needs more awareness :P).

It is billed as a kind of "Zen" game but I personally can't see buying it until it goes on sale. Still and all, supposedly a beautiful, unusual piece of coding that I think should be supported by the community since it pushes the boundaries of the art form. These kinds of works should get grants! ;-p

There is things to do, even though you never interact with anything. Your presence at certain times (day-night cycle or the 4 seasons) triggers events. There are also lots of more or less hidden things to find, and since each playthrough is random there are events which will only happen at some playthroughs. if it makes any sense.

The aim of the "game" is exploring, but it is a exploration based as much on sound as visuals. You discover and create sounds scapes as you move around.

There is also a sort of end-game or an ending you can trigger, but I do not want to say anything about it :), except it is very open to interpretation.

So yes, interactive art more than a game. Beautiful piece though, and I think well worth the money.
