drmlessgames: But that's the entire reason why the game got removed, because they ran out of cdkeys. I think that unlike a digital version of the game which is limitless, cdkeys are only produced in a specific quantity when the game is released.

carnival73: Couldn't they impliment more keys into a patch?
They can't generate more keys because of the rights issues.

Who'd get the money? The people who used to own it or the people who're trying to get the rights to the game?

Then it's not possible to buy this game anymore? That's amazingly lulz worthy.

They could split it 50/50 and then we could all rejoice.

"Over the past year, you have sold one unit. Mr developer, here is your $3 and Mr. Publisher here is your $3 and Mr. Carnival here is your shitty old warez."

Yeah a CDkey is no barrier to re-releasing a game. They simply issue more or they remove it and either make it DRM free or they put some other DRM on it. Most of the time when a game has disappeared from sale it's nothing to do with DRM but simple licensing issues. One of the reasons GOG has such trouble getting games.

Not really.

If you can score a used physical copy of the game, you can register the key on Steam and download it there. I got my key from a new copy I picked up at a local flea market for $4 or so YEARS before this whole mess even began.

Of course, getting a used copy of this game that hasn't had its key registered is a crapshoot...

Possible. Microsoft and Nintendo came to a similar deal with the Wii version of Goldeneye. The only real obstacle is if the original developers hold some of the rights and intend to make their own sequel. Look at all the trouble between Interplay and Bethesda over Fallout.

But what IM saying is that then there's a finite amount of copies that can be obtained from that game, due to the cdkeys. In that game's case is specially pointless to have cdkeys anyways, since their authentication servers went offline a long time ago. Any fake cdkey could be used to install the game offline, and since getting online requires a cdkey vertification, it's only possible to directly join a server by typing its IP nowadays.
I'm suprised that they are going ahead with a second. I didn't think the first one did that well as most people didn't get along with the switching gravity. Good to hear though, hopefully the multiplayer will pick up this time around.

If you find a physical copy of this non-Steamworks game, why wouldn't you just install it from the disc the normal way, rather than trying to get it to run (and download) under Steam?

That said, I have got a physical copy of Prey, and I think it's a fantastic game, so I for one am psyched for a possible sequel.

Well, the original version of Prey was available via a download service called Triton, which died shortly after the game was released. The game was set up on Steam for people who wanted to use their Triton or retail key there, and I thought the retail version required this Triton thing (I was mistaken.)

And you know, for some of us, Steam isn't a problem. Jeez. :P

No no, it just seemed like an odd roundabout way of installing a game that you already have on disc, as if it was the only option you had. But then apparently you thought it was, so that explains it.
I really liked Prey, so this is good news. I hope Prey 2 has the same old-school flavor and such.

Yea, that old school flavor was what I liked about it. I really hope they do a good job with this one.
I think I know why the original Prey game seems "out of keys"
Everywhere I go here in Denmark I find Prey standing around on shelves, begging to be sold, priced typically between $1-$4, that's quite cheap considering a game like Marvel vs. capcom retails here in gamestop at $95

already bought a couple and gifted them away to people saying "Well you know how 3D Realms have been working on Duke Nukem Forever...likely never coming out right? Well here's a game by 3D Realms in which aliens abduct your girl and you go on a shooting rampage. Okay you're an insecure indian, but the initial premise sounds a bit like something a certain blonde guy would do"

That said, I found Prey a fairly nice game. Really liked the portals and gravity bending and scale things. I just didn't like the action, it felt too sluggish.

Now that I know the game can be installed off the CDs, I think I'll give away my physical copy now. The box is all messed up anyway... ^^;
