deanlove: Any way to get the developer diaries and the Steam achievements without having to buy two copies?
avatar
SirPrimalform: Probably not. Obviously you're never going to get Steam achievements here (but I don't think achievements are really relevant to adventure games), so unless Steam starts doing extras..?

Pre-post edit: Just realised the boxed version includes the developer diaries, disc copy and Steam key.

To be honest, when are achievements relevant?

I don't understand why they are 'important' to some people. I just enjoy my games and play for fun, achievements are not part of that for me.

I can sort of understand them in score based arcadey games, but they don't make any sense in adventure games. Logically you should get all the achievements by finishing the game, meaning they're not really achievements... Unless there are achievements like "Fruitlessly attempt to combine the same two items 20 times", but then how is that fun?

For some people additional challenges are fun, too, so it all depends on the type of achievements. I can't think of any worthwhile point-and-click adventure achievements either, and I'm not a competitive guy who would care about showing them off, but I can still see how in some cases achievements could add to the enjoyment of some players.

For example,. it was fun in Plants vs. Zombies to try and beat a level with unusual plant combinations, making the game more challenging. So in that case the achievement was just a proposal of a rule change. Of course you could also make up your own rules, but it seems a little more official this way and you get a small recognition when the game acknowledges you won by sticking to the new rules.

In the end I prefer unlockables to achievements because I find them more motivating, but then again, if you don't like this sort of thing at all, unlockables are even more annoying than achievements. With achievements, at least it's easy to ignore them without the feeling that you're missing out on something. A good game doesn't need any of this anyway, IMO it's just the icing on the cake and an incentive to play around with the game a little longer, even if you already beat it.

Thank you.

As for those questioning why, the achievements were quite well done in the last Wadjet game (Da New Guyz) - they weren't Steam based, but a lot were around doing things that triggered fun extra dialogue. In adventure games they can be a nice pointer at things like that - named correctly they're almost extra puzzles - hinting obliquely at trying a certain object combination or such that doesn't actually work to progress the plot, but gives you a unique bit of dialogue or such and a pop-up. So that's why. Although I guess I should of asked if the achievements will only be on Steam or if they'll be viewable in-game on the GoG version. I'm not bothered about showing them off to my friends.

Oh, you played Da New Guyz? How did you like it? Quick, before Dave is listening in! ;)
(You may also PM me, if you like. I've been considering getting it, but I'm not entirely convinced yet.)

Ah I see, well then there's a possibility it'll be the same with this but there's no guarantee since the developers are different. Gemini Rue and Resonance aren't Wadjet Eye games per se, Gemini Rue is by Joshua Nuernburger and Resonance is by Vince Twelve. Not sure who Da New Guys is by, but I don't think it's an 'in house' Wadjet Eye game either.

They weren't planned and written by Dave Gilbert, but I think all three are still considered WadjetEye games. If I'm not mistaken the original game by Joshua Nuernberger at the very least got a graphical makeover, I believe all of them got voiceovers due to WadjetEye and I think Dave mentioned earlier in this thread that his wife helped program Resonance, so they were definitely involved in the creation of all three games, even if they didn't mess with the original concepts and story.

It's those affiliate titles like "To The Moon" that aren't really WadjetEye Games, because they sell them or link to them, but weren't involved in the creation at all.

Oh yeah, I was just drawing a distinction between ones actually created by Dave Gilbert and just worked on by Wadjet Eye. I didn't mean in the sense that they didn't deserve any credit or anything.

PMIK: Awesome! Does mean we get the rest of Wadjet eye games here eventually!

Austrobogulator: We can only hope.
Is this an Australian thing? I want to see their games here also.

Not quite finished it yet, but enjoying it. It's interesting as a lot of the other Wadjet Eye stuff feels very professional, despite being indie games in AGS. The art style and voice acting for Da New Guyz means that it feels more indie. It feels like something put together by a few guys in their bedrooms. That's not a criticism, as it suits the funny and silly plot well, but it certainly gives it a different vibe to Gemini Rue or Blackwell. But the puzzles are smart, in a few places it does some very different things with them, and it made me laugh out loud a couple of times. I'd recommend it.
I hope this game resonates with me.

Leroux: But I can't guarantee that you won't get stuck as some point, because it is one-problem-one-solution, and also quite linear. However, if you get stuck every half hour, that would probably only add up to only about 3 times during the game, considering their short length. ;)

VinceTwelve: Hi! Developer of Resonance here!

I just wanted to say that I did my best to provide multiple solutions to the harder puzzles in the game and that there were optional paths and puzzles to explore. There's also the built-in hint system (you can ask the other characters for advice, and they'll nudge you in the right direction), so this should help you not feel like you're stuck for too long!

Also, while most adventure games these days are pretty short, Resonance is not! My most recent play-through took me 11 hours. I'm guessing it's around 12 hours for a first time player if you don't lean on a walthrough.

Regarding the graphics, I think once you're playing the game and see them in beautiful motion, you'll fall in love with the retro aesthetic! If you don't, let me know and I'll do my best to make it up to you!

And on a personal note, I've been working on this game for over five years now and am super excited to team up with Wadjet Eye games and GoG to bring you this high-quality game! Thanks!
While I wasn't sure on the graphics, seems like a good game.

Ok you've made up my mind, consider it preordered. Ah if only work would give me more time to play games.

Get a job where you can play games? :P

lowyhong: Really? GOG? You had to put this out after I more or less threw my entire fortune at the Tex Murphy Kickstarter?

:(
What there is a Tex Murphy Kickstarter, how did I miss that.
Ok just checked it out http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/texmurphy/tex-murphy-project-fedora
Now only question is what pledge can I afford, sadly less incentive to go higher as I own all the older games on GOG already
