As much as the tale of religious enforcement of sexual ignorance isn't new, my initial reaction to this is that it's bullshit.

Fenixp: Polish people are highly religious.

Oh, dear... Two deadly sins down, five to go ;P.

bansama: Apparently, this "game playing" by those involved is nothing more than a mass media fabrication based on a rumor, which apparently is based on a illustration by a Japanese erotic manga artist.

It's an urban legend, as far as I can tell.

Gimgak: (...) how sexual the media is in Poland. Up until a few years ago you'd basically have porn on billboards if I remember correctly, and still pretty close to it.

Say WHAT 0_o ? The most "indecent" billboards I've seen were lingerie ads (featuring, obviously, pretty women dressed in the said products).
Pics or it didn't happen.

Alright well kinda bad example I guess, more of a difference between what I see here in the states to Poland. Even little differences like having porn mags on the front counter in a gas station don't happen in the States, it's a lot more sexual culture.

But I'm sure one of our many Polish members may be able to provide better information.

First-hand experience?

You've lost me. Who's experience?

well, that's the only way anyone's experience could prove useful. (You can't actually see nothing, if you don't see something it could be because you are looking the wrong way, but if you see it then you know it is there.)

And a lot of times people see things because they 'know' it's there.
Hrrmf I'm skeptical about this as well - you'd be surprised how often myths become full-fledged stories or jokes. Take the "every time I clap my hands someone dies" joke. It only takes one site or one small newspaper to take up the "rumour" for other ones to jump on it without any factual evidence.

... The US have the largest slice of the porn industry in the world.. I don't quite follow the logic.

What he is saying is a pretty common observation.
In the US, we are much less (publicly) open about sex. We have pretty strict standards regarding what people can get away with in advertisements. As such, we look prudish to a lot of Europe, and a lot of Europe looks like an orgy to us. Of course, because we are so openly repressed, we tend to watch a LOT of porn.
It is the same thing with violence. We are much less phased by that, so we look like barbarians to much of Europe, whereas much of Europe looks like wussies to us.
avatar
NamelessFragger: Forget the "that's not sharp" bit-some people will bang ANYTHING, regardless of whether it moves, doesn't move, or doesn't even have any holes. (They'll MAKE them in the latter case.) It's probably why Rule 34 exists.
Anyway, assuming that this is real, it's more proof that we need better sex education...or whatever it takes to get people to not think of sex as a cardinal sin under all circumstances, but at the same time not disregard the consequences.
(My personal solution? Avoid sex entirely! Seriously, what a hassle, especially socially.)

Whitecroc: Abstinence-only education might seem like a reasonable idea, and might even work to a certain degree, but the fact remains that it doesn't come close to solving the problems it aims to fix, and that particular line of thought has already been taken to its extreme.
So, yeah, I agree. Better sex ed is the only reasonable solution as far as I can tell.

I actually don't think hard-line celibacy/abstinence is the answer to this problem for everyone. I just happen to follow that route because I have no intentions of getting married or even pursuing a significant other, nor do I want to have to kill somebody in self-defense because that someone misjudged my sexual preferences and then thinks I'm deserving of a lynching. By "my solution", I meant "a solution for me", not "a solution for everyone".
Also, by "better sex ed", not only does the content need to be improved, but it should probably be taught earlier-like the instant people start hitting puberty. If anyone cries "ZOMG PEDOPHILIA" in response to this, they can just shut up, because the current approach of not explaining what sex is to our children and what can happen because of it clearly isn't working.

I've always found it odd that people here will complain less about gruesome murder and more about an exposed female nipple. Goes along with that supposed Zardoz quote about how the gun is good and the penis is evil.
And with this current state of society, that just makes the reception of porn even worse. People have enough problems watching two straight humans have consensual sex in the missionary position-just wait 'til you see their reactions to the Internet's collection of every fetish imaginable and then some. (It doesn't help that the Internet has skewed my definition of "porn" such that it generally includes all those fetishes combined by default, and I can't unsee any of it. Discovering image boards on a Friday was a gigantic mistake...)

Exactly what I meant. It's really pretty messed up that parents here seem to be more worried about their kids watching porn and having sex than being exposed to violence and committing acts of violence.

That's one thing about American culture/society that has always confused the hell out of me. Repressed in regards to sex, but your media outlets have a ball with public figures having affairs, or just dating in general.

I agree with this. Sex education at the start of puberty would be ideal, in theory. Having said that, teens will be teens and they'll make bad, yet informed, decisions.

How is that hard to follow? Imagine little kids giggling because people they read about people doing naughty things.
